Gerard Valkyrie is a major antagonist in the 2001-2016 supernatural action manga series Bleach and its 2022 anime television series adaptation Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War.
He is a Quincy and a member of the Wandenreich's Sternritter with the designation "M" - The Miracle, as well as an elite member of Yhwach's Schutzstaffel. He is also the heart of the Soul King.
He is voiced by Tsuyoshi Koyama in Japanese and by Dave B. Mitchell in English.
Appearance[]
Gerard is a tall and very muscular man with fair skin, shoulder-length light blonde hair, and white eyes without pupils. He wears a silver helmet with feathers on the sides, silver-gold gloves and sandals, and a voluminous red cape. He is armed mainly with a short sword and a small buckler.
Personality[]
Gerard is quite temperamental and self-confident, even arrogant, usually the first to attack, as he demonstrated by immediately attacking Senjumaru Shutara after being summoned to the Soul King's Palace. He is so confident in his abilities that when he was standing in front of several captains and lieutenants at once, he insisted that they all attack him at the same time, because he believed that in a fair one-on-one fight they had no chance against him.
In comparison to his fellow comrades, he's more humble and friendly in nature. Even towards his enemies, he commends them for their power and skill in combat, should they impress him in battle. Due to the nature of his abilities, he likes to proclaim himself as a "god-sized" being.
Trivia[]
- According to Tite Kubo, the visual motifs of the Schutzstaffel are based on different eras of war: Gerard is based off the medieval era.
- Gerard's shoes were originally boots until chapter 667, where they were changed to sandals. The anime adaptation has him in sandals from the start.
- In the anime, Gerard makes his first appearance when Yhwach anoints Uryū as his successor, far earlier than when Yhwach invaded the Soul King Palace.
