I keep imagining myself in charge of a large empire.
~ Gary Smith foreshadowing his goals.
It's sink or swim, my friend. And if you're good at swimming, you gotta let the losers drown.
~ Gary demonstrating his own Social Darwinistic mentality to Jimmy.

Gary Smith is the titular main antagonist of the 2006 video game Bully.

He is a malicious but highly intelligent student, aiming to take over the student population of the private high school of Bullworth Academy. Smith feigns friendship with the hero Jimmy Hopkins to use him as muscle and a scapegoat, but his reign of terror comes to an end when Hopkins realizes what kind of person he is, becoming his archenemy.

He was voiced by Peter Vack.

Appearance[]

8827Gary Smith

Gary is a tall and slender fifteen-year-old boy with dark brown hair in a low fade style, dark brown eyes that can also appear reddish at night and hint at his sinister nature, as well as a large scar over his right eye. He wears a teal Bullworth sweater vest unique to him, over a white shirt, and grey school slacks. He has a silver watch on his left wrist and a brown leather band on his right.

In the winter he wears a black wool skullcap. At Halloween he wears a SS Officer costume and carries a riding crop which Jimmy can wrestle off him.

Personality[]

Gary has a horrible (and entirely deserved) reputation among the student body. He is distrusted by all, and scorns them all in turn. Fellow students state that he is a violent, egotistical, destructive, merciless, power-hungry sociopath and that he likes to torture people. He claims to suffer from Attention Deficit Disorder, and displays dark tetrad personality traits, paranoia, and possibly schizophrenia, perhaps due to his awful family life. He was on behaviour medication, but stopped taking it sometime around Halloween, worsening his condition.

Gary craves for stimulation, constantly seeking for thrill. He is thoroughly unable to connect to people, only viewing them as worthless tools to play with and discard, and the mere idea of sharing is alien to him. He has a strong superiority complex, fancying himself as a great ruler. He cannot fathom being wrong, reviles all contradiction, trusts nobody, and sees plots against him everywhere, even when there are none.

Gary hates society at large. He will stoop to any means to manipulate people, just for the thrill of having them eating out of his hand, regarding that as a validation of his low opinion. He took great, albeit perverse-like sadistic joy in leading Dr. Crabblesnitch, the principal, on getting students expelled, putting others into therapy and causing a veritable war in Bullworth Academy, for no other reason that he could. Much worse, he relishes in the chaos he causes, gleefully taunting and insulting his victims, rubbing his success to their face and going out of his way to infuriate them.

Despite his mental instability, he is highly intelligent, manipulative and observant, boasting that "nothing escapes [his] notice". He is very adept in using people's rivalry to play people against one another, by spreading lies and framing them behind their backs. He is also very good in orchestrating situations, by playing for several sides at once.

His modus operandi is to "befriend" his target and gain their trust, all the while plotting against them. He is also shown to be an excellent manipulator and liar, knowing what buttons to push to direct people where he wants, and proves able to make people believe whatever he wants them to, even when they despise him and know full well that he is not to be trusted.

However, his clinically overinflated ego leads him to underestimate the heroes, like so many criminal masterminds. Having pegged Jimmy Hopkins as a brainless muscle-head and Pete Kowalsky as a spineless nobody, he cannot conceive having misjudged them, failing to regard Jimmy's drive to solve troubles and Pete’s intelligence rivalling his own. He starts out as cautious and collected, but stopping his treatment causes him to throw restraint through the window.

He no longer bothers with discretion, wanting everyone to know how he “beat” them, only focusing on his short-term, hollow victory. When Jimmy rightly points out that his so-called success is bound to crumble around him, he laughs it off, being too fixated on his power high to care. He keeps gloating, even when cornered, all within earshot of authority, leading to his well-deserved downfall.

Biography[]

Background[]

Gary's background is mostly unknown. He cites his parents as one of his "problems" (along with pretty much everyone else in the world). The elderly townswoman Miss Abby speaks poorly of Gary's mother, and the very rich Mr. Smith is hinted to be Gary's grandfather/father, having the same surname and complaining about the state of the family.

According to the nerd Donald Anderson, Mr. Smith (probably Gary's father) was kicked out of Bullworth Academy and later went to prison. This explains that Gary has an unhealthy family life that could be the source of his behaviour. Towards the end of the game, several townsfolk make comments about Gary's unstable personality.

Gary is very open about his plan to take over Bullworth, going so far as to shout that he intends to run the school in front of the clique leaders and their bodyguards. Somehow, he was apparently able to convince them all to trust him, although his interactions with them took place off screen.

Bully[]

Chapter 1[]

The fifteen-year-old Jimmy Hopkins meets Gary Smith at the start of the game, when his mother and new stepfather drop him off at the strict Bullworth Academy. Gary then befriends Jimmy, introducing his "friend" (and perpetual victim) Pete Kowalski, and showing him around the school and its four cliques, who constantly fight and bully one another out of petty rivalries and popularity struggles.

Gary tells Jimmy of his plan to rule the school and the two work together, occasionally with Pete Kowalski. (Although Gary frequently bullies Pete, and Jimmy has no desire to run Bullworth, believing it to be nothing more than a bid for becoming the most popular students, something he cares nothing about.)

However, Gary stops taking his medication and becomes increasingly paranoid, persuading himself that Jimmy is plotting against him, while he just wants to graduate under the radars with his friends. Gary then leads Jimmy into a trap, forcing him to fight Russell Northrop, whom he led to believe that Jimmy insulted his mother, at the end of Chapter One. After Jimmy prevails, Gary disappears into the background, creating trouble for his “friends”.

Chapters 2, 3, & 4[]

Gary first convinces the Preppies clique to turn against Jimmy, claiming that Jimmy called their comrade Tad Spencer inbred. He appears again in Chapter Three, helping Johnny Vincent and his Greasers clique in Wrong Part of Town, the local slums. Gary then again disappears into the background, but also turns the Nerds against Jimmy, feeding their leader Earnest Jones with his charade of taking over the school.

Chapter 5[]

After Jimmy defeats and befriends every clique leader, Gary turns the Townies (a clique of dropouts) against him and convinces them to start an open war against the Bullworth population. Gary then sows discord by unleashing rats in the library (the Nerd's lair), setting fire to the Jocks' gym, having the Townies steal the Preppies' boxing trophies, and trapping the Greasers' leader in Happy Volts Asylum, framing Jimmy for it all. This causes all the cliques to turn against Jimmy, accusing him of having worsened a situation he promised to solve.

Jimmy solves every problem, but Gary's slander worked, and he soon finds himself despised by everyone in school, save for Pete. After returning from defeating the Townies in their lair of Blue Skies Industrial Park, he is expelled by Dr. Crabblesnitch, who learnt from Gary that Jimmy defaced the Town Hall. (In fact, this was yet another of Gary’s crimes he was framed for.)

Utterly disgusted, Jimmy goes to town and befriends Zoe Taylor, a Townie girl who was expelled like him. When Pete tries to get him back to business, he first rejects him but finally gets convinced to clear his name, enlisting Zoe and Russell's help. Meanwhile, Gary uses the troubles he caused to get into Dr. Crabblesnitch's good graces, being named Head Boy. He wastes no time in manipulating the four cliques into openly attacking one another, causing such chaos with his lies that a riot soon rages on the school campus, forcing most teachers to flee.

Jimmy (with help from Zoe and Russell) defeats the Townies' leader Edgar Munsen, discovering that he too bought Gary’s charade. Learning from Zoe about the sheer chaos at Bullworth Academy, Jimmy enlists the Townies to put an end to Gary’s demented schemes once and for all. Together, they pacify the school, first by defeating the leaders once more, then by defeating the out of control Prefects.

Final Showdown[]

Antney66's top VGM 30 Bully-Final Showdown

Right after, Gary insults Jimmy on the public announcement system. Jimmy chases his former friend to the roof to get even. Fully aware that he is the weaker one, Gary opts to lure him onto the construction scaffoldings around the dilapidated belltower for field advantage.

Jimmy cuts Gary's gloating, stating that he just "won" the hatred of everyone, but Gary does not care. He gleefully boasts that his status as Head Boy would get Jimmy into further trouble. Jimmy’s final plea falls on deaf ears, and Gary insults his mother's virtue, enraging him.

The first stage of the Final Battle consists in chasing Gary through the scaffoldings. This can prove tricky as Gary throws bricks at him as he crosses gaps on small planks, and empties wheelbarrows or rubbles as he climbs ladders, before fleeing further up. Jimmy must duck the former and get on the side for the latter. If he gets hit by a brick, he hangs over the void and must regain footing before the next hit or plummet into the abyss.

The second stage starts after Jimmy dodges the bells Gary makes fall one after the other and tackles him into the scaffoldings below. Despite Gary proving a better brawler than expected, having moves similar to Jimmy's own and being able to counter his blows and pin him on the railings if he gets an opening, a physical threat he is not and he shall fall quickly. Jimmy must pummel him and not hesitate to kick him when he is down. As soon as he loses a life-bar, the scaffolding breaks and they fall on the one below. Until the third one sends them into the principal’s office.

Gary is absolutely no match for Jimmy, who knocks him out. They fall through the glass roof into Dr. Crabblesnitch’s office, who overheard his gloating. Gary is expelled and dragged out of the office by a gleeful Jimmy. As a reward, Jimmy and Zoe’s expulsions are overturned and Pete is appointed Head Boy at Jimmy's suggestion. The game ends with Jimmy receiving well-deserved applause and praise from the entire school, followed by a kiss from Zoe.

Despite Gary being expelled, Miss Danvers continues to make announcements over the public announcement system, calling him to Crabblesnitch's office. Also, small talk claims that he is hiding in the belltower of the Academy or living close to Blue Skies Industrial Park with the Townies. He has most likely become a pariah due to his actions being known – and despised – by pretty much everyone around.

Quotes[]

I'm a genius. Geniuses don't need medication.
~ Gary Smith
Come here, we're gonna torture you.
~ Gary Smith
I gotta go, important people to see.
~ Gary Smith
I CAN TAKE YOU, HOPKINS!
~ Gary to Jimmy
You're too trusting, Jimmy. From the start you were pathetically naive... Poor little Jimmy, all alone at big scary Bullworth. Under fire from Russell and his goons, desperate for help. So sad, so hopeless, just needing a friend. Any friend. You were so easy to manipulate, Jimmy! And once we were friends, it was all so clear. You had your lust for power, but without the intelligence to back it up. Using you as a pawn was so wonderfully obvious! Let Jimmy have his fun. Let him play his childish little games with Earnest, Ted, Derby, Johnny and Edgar, and just wait for the right moment to swoop in and take it all. It was like lining up dominoes. It all fell together so perfectly. While you were off wasting your time with whores like Lola, I was in the dorm, planning. While you were racing bikes, while you were playing at the carnival like a child, my plan was coming together... Does it hurt, looking back in all the time you wasted over the last year? All the time, you were working for me! Any regrets, Jimmy? Looking forward to the wasteland that your life is about to become? After you're expelled for your antics over the last few weeks you won't have anywhere left to go! No school take a child with your history, no prospects, you'll end up begging for money on the streets if you're lucky! No wonder your mother left you here, she must be so embarrassed by you, Jimmy Hopkins!
~ Gary's final speech where he taunts Jimmy.
The thing is, if I win, you're just another punk. You win, and you'll be sent away even quicker for beating up the head boy!
~ Gary Smith to Jimmy Hopkins in the "The Final Showdown"

Trivia[]

  • Gary Smith is the youngest main antagonist in all of Rockstar's games.
    • In the original ending of the game, when players fight him atop the school roof, he was planned to fall off to his death when the player beats him. This was later cut out, likely because killing a minor would be very controversial just like adding minors to GTA, despite how evil Gary is.
    • For that reason, he is one of Rockstar Games villains to not be killed instead being defeated because Rockstar Games doesn't make this game with blood, guns or stealing cars so it makes this game the only one to dont have those.
  • Gary may have been locked away in the Happy Volts Asylum, despite that he is mentioned to have been a patient and because of his mental illness.
  • The creators of Bully stated that Jimmy Hopkins is not a type of person to turn out like all the protagonists or antagonists in the Grand Theft Auto series. However, judging by Gary's behavior, he might be end up as a criminal when he reaches adulthood.
  • Peter Vack has stated that he really enjoyed playing Gary, having expressed interest in reprising the role in a hypothetical Bully sequel if it ever materializes.
  • He is the only villain that Jimmy cannot fight until the very end of the game.
  • He is also one of the few characters that cannot be met in free roam normally along with Petey and the clique leaders and a few school teachers.
