Walter Cole is one of the main antagonists of the 1994 action film Surviving the Game (a loose modern-day translation of the famous novella The Most Dangerous Game). He was operating a soup kitchen in Seattle when Hell's Canyon Outfitters offered him a second job as a recruiter/manhunter. Walter Cole may seem friendly, but deep down he is cruel and merciless murderer. It can be safely assumed that he has claimed many unfortunate victims prior to the events of the film, including the nameless quarry slain in the movie's prologue.

Biography[]

Walter Cole is first seen observing the film's protagonist, Jack Mason, gauging Mason's potential for survival in the wilderness.

Cole offers Mason a free sandwich but Mason ignores him. Seeing that Mason is about to commit suicide by walking into traffic, Cole rescues him and offers him a job with Hell's Canyon Outfitters. When Cole mentions the hefty salary that goes with this job, Mason consults HCO founder/director Thomas Burns, who hires him after a brief interview.

Burns and Cole shanghai Mason to their swanky lodge in Hell's Canyon, deep in the "outback" of the Pacific Northwest. There Mason is introduced to more of HCO's clientele: Ted "Doc" Hawkins, John Griffin, father-and-son entrepreneurs Derek and JR Wolfe. The younger Wolfe is the only hunter oblivious to the true nature of the hunt; ultimately, he is pushed into the game against his will. They discuss the job and Mason goes to sleep, while Cole and the other hunters go over their plan.

The next morning, Cole points a gun at Mason's face and tells him that they are not hunting animals but rather Mason himself. Mason flees the cabin while Cole and Company enjoy breakfast. Mason stops fleeing, comes to a realization and turns back. The manhunters then start their search for Mason, unaware that he has returned to the lodge in search of a weapon, instead finding a trophy room containing preserved heads of the victims from previous hunts. An empty jar has Mason's name on it. Outraged, Mason prepares to burn down the lodge using chemicals found outside. By now the manhunters have realized what Mason is up to, and they rush back to the lodge.

Derek enters just as Mason sets the lodge on fire. Mason's escape is hampered by Hawkins, who engages him in hand-to-hand combat. Mason tosses Hawkins through a window and into the burning trophy room, just before the entire cabin is gutted by flames. Finding Hawkins dead, the hunters pursue Mason deep into the outback; Mason, armed only with his wits, succeeds in outsmarting and misleading his pursuers. By planting and lighting a couple of cigarettes, he captures Griffin and takes him hostage.

Over the night, Mason learns why Griffin is taking part in the hunt, as years ago, Griffin's daughter was murdered by a homeless man, and Griffin has been venting his rage against the homeless ever since. Mason, in turn, relays his own tragic tale of losing his own family in an apartment fire. After interacting with each other, Griffin realizes that he grossly misunderstood Mason, who releases him. When Griffin refuses to hunt Mason anymore, Cole, on a signal from Burns, kills the redeemed manhunter as a potential "whistle-blower".

With their numbers dwindling, the manhunters are more intent on finding and slaying Mason, who sabotages Cole's ATV by sticking the ignition wires into the gas tank. Cole spots Mason and tries to start his ATV, which explodes and blows his legs up. He laughs maniacally and mutters. Burns puts him out of his misery by using pressure point on his throat: choking him to death.
