If six pounds of pure plutonium is powerful enough to change the balance of the world, imagine what five tons will do, it's very interesting!
~ Jean Vilain discussing his plans with his right-hand man, Hector.
Now what?!
~ Vilain's last words.

Jean Vilain is the main antagonist in the 2012 action film The Expendables 2. He is a combatant mercenary and international terrorist leader who leads a notorious terroristic mercenary faction known as The Sangs.

He was portrayed by Jean-Claude Van Damme who also portrayed Luc Deveraux in Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, Ivan "The Russian" Kraschinsky in No Retreat, No Return, and Edward Garrotte in Replicant.

Personality[]

It was clear early on that Jean Vilain is a diabolical terrorist and war criminal who feels absolutely no regret for all his villainous deeds; so much so that his sole concern is to become rich from selling weapons-grade plutonium, which shows that he is also ambitious for profit. Despite his cruel personality, Vilain seems to be a really calm and collected individual. He will not hesitate to eliminate and kill anyone who stands in his way.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Jean Vilain was born in Belgium on October 18, 1960. Nothing is really known about Vilain's past, however, at some unknown point, he joined the Foreign French Legion, and after his military service, Vilain became a mercenary and an international terrorist leader as well as arms dealer, making weapons deals around the world.

More than that, at another unknown point, Vilain had founded a terrorist mercenary organization known as The Sangs; said organization would go on to perpetuate fear, havoc and violence all over Albania and other countries. Around that time, Vilain had his right-hand man Hector become the Sangs' second-in-command.

Before the events of the film, he had found out there is a huge amount of precious plutonium grade, implied to total around 5 tonnes, at an abandoned Albanian mine, so he started to kidnap children and men in Albania so they would work in the mines in order to find the plutonium. He ultimately found the cache, and sought to transform it into nuclear weapons and to sell them to the highest bidders around the globe.

Meeting the Expendables[]

Vilain crosses paths with the Expendables in Albania when he captures their newest and youngest member, Billy "The Kid" Timmons. He then demands that they drop their weapons and give him the case with the coordinates to an abandoned Soviet plutonium mine. After the team drop their guns and give the case to Vilain, he has Hector hold Barney's knife to Billy's chest as he roundhouse kicks it into Billy's chest, killing him as the Expendables watch in horror, powerless to do anything about it. In so doing, Vilain becomes the vengeful group's primary target.

Finding The Plutonium and Final Battle at the Airport[]

Villain later finds the weapons grade plutonium he has been searching for in the abandoned mine and excavates it, intending to sell it to the highest bidder. After gaining the plutonium with Hector's help, he attempts to transport it by plane but is stopped by the Expendables and their allies, Trench Mauser and Mr. Church. To buy time for the plutonium to be loaded onto the plane, Vilain assembled Hector and the Sangs to battle the Expendables and their allies in a gunfight. In the end, the Expendables win the battle after they eliminate the Sangs one by one whilst Hector is killed by Barney's closest friend Lee Christmas in the ensuing carnage.

Final Fight with Barney and Death[]

During the battle, Vilain draws Ross to him for a final confrontation between them. The two briefly exchange gun fire until Vilain runs out of ammunition. He then goads Ross into facing him in a fair fight and they battle each other in a brutal hand-to-hand showdown, in which Vilain has the the upper hand throughout most of the fight. Eventually, Vilain grabs hold of Ross' knife and begins to taunt him over Billy's death, whilst stating that Ross will die just like him.

However, Ross grabs some chains and uses them against Vilain; he successfully blocks Vilain's attempt to stab at him, then brutally beats Vilain with them before overpowering him. Ross then reclaims his knife and, with his opponent now at his mercy, orders Vilain to get up; Vilain obliges and faces Ross at the latter's forceful urging. Ross then ties the chain around Vilain's neck and pulls the latter towards him before using the knife to stab his opponent, finally killing Vilain and thus avenging Billy's death.

Shortly after Vilain's death, Ross cuts his head off and presents it in a bloody bag to Trench and Church to prove that Vilain is dead.

Trivia[]

  • Jean-Claude Van Damme was previously offered a role for The Expendables, but he turned it down claiming that there was no substance in the character.[1]
  • In an interview with BBC Radio, Sylvester Stallone said that he named the character 'Vilain' to make it similar to the name of 19th Century French poet Paul Verlaine. This was to set up an extremely obscure in-joke where the final showdown between Van Damme and Stallone could be seen as a fight between Vilain/Verlaine and Rambo/Rimbaud.
  • Actually, Vilain is based on Van Damme himself.
    • In fact, Vilain's fictional biography is the same of Van Damme.
  • Van Damme and Scott Adkins also starred in Universal Soldier Day of Reckoning.
