The Thing Upstairs is the main antagonist of the claymation series The Trap Door. He is a cranky, hungry behemoth that lives upstairs, constantly shouting demands to his servant, Berk, to maintain the castle and prepare his meals.

He is voiced by the late Willie Rushton, who provided voices for all other speaking characters in the television series.

Appearance[]

The Thing Upstairs resides within a massive and ancient castle "in the dark and nasty regions where no-one goes". He is never seen entirely, though a small portion of his body can seen briefly during a lightning flash  in "The Little Thing", appearing as a formless mass of lumpy flesh. Berk describes him as a "great giant carbuncle" or "wobbly lump of gooey blubber". He has also had a few body parts fall off, such as a giant fang in "The Pain", and one of his many detatchable eyeballs in "Not Very Nice". He is also implied to have three humps on his back, more than one head, and has the ability to fly. He also (somehow) wears pajamas.

Personality[]

The Thing Upstairs is cranky, gluttonous, and even whiny at times, constantly shouting demands to Berk in every episode, mostly to feed him, but also to mend his clothes, give him baths, or simply to be quiet. His meals often consist of nasty things like bugs, worms, garbage, and other disgusting things that Berk cooks up in his kitchen and sends up via dumbwaiter. More than once when a monster comes out of the trap door, Berk gets rid of it by feeding it to the Thing Upstairs.

Trivia[]

  • The Thing Upstairs talks in a Cockney London English accent.
