BELIEVE IN THE SHIELD!
~ The Shield's motto.
Sierra. Hotel. India. Echo. Lima. Delta.SHIELD.
~ The Shield's calling card.
We're carved into stone, we're forged out of iron. The Shield... is unyielding
~ Seth Rollins.

The Shield was a professional wrestling stable in the WWE. The group was originally composed of:

Their intention is to fight off what they claim as "injustice" in WWE.

They are known for their black ring entire (most notably their protective vests), and their entrance is mainly going through the live audience.

Their gimmick is that of a stable that possesses excellent teamwork, and a willingness to sacrifices themselves for the good of the stable, in which they achieve victory by overwhelming opponents with superior numbers after incapacitating their opponents.

All three members have held championship gold within their first year of competition, with Ambrose as the former WWE United States Champion (lost the title to Sheamus in a 20 man battle royal on the May 5, 2014 edition of Raw, after holding the title for a record-breaking 351 days, winning it from Kofi Kingston at the 2013 Extreme Rules) and Rollins and Reigns as former Tag Team Champions (losing the championships to the Rhodes Brothers (Cody Rhodes and Goldust (Dustin Rhodes)) on the October 14, 2013 edition of Raw in a No DQ match).

They made their debut at the 2012 Survivor Series on November 18, 2012, interfering in the WWE Championship main event that was between reigning champion CM Punk and challengers John Cena and Ryback in a triple threat match. As Ryback Shell Shocked John Cena and was going for the pinfall victory on him to win the championship, the debuting trio of Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns interfered from the crowd and triple-powerbombed Ryback through the announce table, allowing Punk to retain the title by pinning Cena after the Shell Shock from Ryback. The trio later became an auxillary group of the Authority, serving as Triple H and Stephanie McMahon's chief enforcers.

On the June 2, 2014 edition of Raw, Seth Rollins defected from The Shield and re-joined The Authority, thus turning heel.

On June 20, 2014, The Shield officially disbanded (Ambrose and Rollins disbanding the stable to focus on their own virtues), although there continues to be an official alliance and friendship between Ambrose and Reigns following the group's dissolution.

Biography[]

Debut at Survivor Series and Alignment with Paul Heyman and CM Punk (2012-2013)[]

Shield ss12

The Shield power bombing Ryback in their debut.

The three debuted on November 18, 2012 at Survivor Series by aiding CM Punk in his WWE title defense against John Cena and Ryback by power bombing the latter through the announce table. They later attacked the WWE Tag Team Champions, Kane and Daniel Bryan, after Kane competed against Punk in a non-title match on Raw. These attacks lead to them facing Ryback, Kane and Daniel Bryan in a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match at the TLC pay per view on December 16. They clearly won the match via pinfall, marking their first victory as a team in sanctioned competition.

The group later attacked Randy Orton for competing against Brad Maddox, the referee who helped CM Punk retain his championship against Ryback at Hell in a Cell. The attack was used to write Orton off the show to allow him to recover from a shoulder injury. The Shield then aided Punk a second time against Ryback in his Tables, Ladders and Chairs match against Ryback for the championship in January 7, 2013. Their actions seeded speculation that they were under the command of Punk, although both they and CM Punk denied these claims. They would go so far as to assist CM Punk a third time in his title match against the Rock at the Royal Rumble, but despite their efforts, the Rock defeated Punk for the championship. It was revealed the next day that they were hired by CM Punk and his manager Paul Heyman to assist them both when needed. On February 17, they defeated John Cena, Sheamus, and Ryback cleanly in a six-man tag team match at the Elimination Chamber event.

The following night on Raw, Chris Jericho teamed with Ryback and Sheamus to face the Shield in another six-man tag team match, which the Shield would once again win. At WrestleMania 29, the Shield would once again be victorious in a match against the team of Sheamus, Big Show, and Randy Orton. The next night the group attempted to attack The Undertaker, but were thwarted by the arrival of Hell No coming to the Undertaker's rescue. They would remain undefeated after winning a six-man tag match on Raw against the Undertaker and Hell No the next week. By this time CM Punk had gone on hiatus, so the group began to look after their own interests. On May 19 at the 2013 edition of Extreme Rules, Dean Ambrose would defeat Kofi Kingston to win the United States Championship, while Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns defeated Hell No to win the WWE Tag Team Championships later in the night.

Enforcers for "The Authority" (2013-2014)[]

The Shield would suffer their first loss on the June 14 edition of SmackDown to the team of Daniel Bryan, Kane, and Randy Orton. The next month at Money in the Bank, Ambrose would fail to claim the SmackDown Money in the Bank Contract for the World Heavyweight Championship, but his partners would retain their Tag Team Championships against the Usos in the event's dark match. At SummerSlam, Triple H would turn heel by costing Daniel Bryan the WWE Championship, and would later enlist the Shield to prevent Cody Rhodes and Goldust from earning their jobs back by winning a tag team match at Battleground. The Shield would lose the match, thus allowing the Rhodes brothers to return to WWE.

One week after Battleground, the Rhodes brothers defeated the Shield for the WWE Tag Team Championships thanks to interference from Big Show. At Hell in a Cell, the Shield would fail to reclaim the titles. The next month at Survivor Series the group's luck would change, as they would win the traditional five on five elimination tag team match, defeating the team of the Rhodes Brothers, the Usos and Rey Mysterio, with Reigns being the sole survivor and eliminating four men from the opposing team. At Tables, Ladders and Chairs the trio would face CM Punk in a three-on-one handicap match, about arranged by Triple H to punish Punk for speaking out against him. Punk would win the match after causing Reigns to accidentally spear Rollins, ending their year on a low note in comparison to their dominant performance a year prior.

Tension (2014)[]

At the Royal Rumble, the tension that had developed in the group between Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns was further heated when Ambrose tried to eliminate Reigns from the Rumble match, only to be eliminated, along with Rollins, by Roman just moments later. Reigns would go on to eliminate twelve men, setting a new elimination record at the event that had stood for thirteen years, a distinction previously held by Kane with eleven eliminations. On Raw the Shield faced the team of Daniel Bryan, Sheamus and John Cena for the right to compete in the Elimination Chamber match for the WWE Championship, but lost when the Wyatt Family interfered. The two factions would face off in a six-man tag team match at the event, the Shield's specialty, but the Wyatt family would pick up the victory after Reigns was pinned by Bray Wyatt.

Eight days later on Raw, the Shield faced the Wyatts in a rematch. During the match, Seth Rollins abandoned his team when Ambrose tried to make a tag to him, citing frustration over Ambrose and Reigns not being there for him when he tried to make a tag earlier in the match due to his teammates being distracted with the other members of the Wyatt family at ringside. His abandonment caused the Shield to lose the match, furthering descent between the three.

=Reconcilation (2014)=>[]

On the March 7, 2014 edition of SmackDown, all 3 members of The Shield all met in the ring to "clear the air" on their disharmony. Rollins says that his actions achieved his purpose of getting Ambrose and Reigns to meet eye-to-eye. After the two hit each other, the trio reconciled.

Rebellion Against The Authority, Face Turn, Various Feuds, and Feud with Evolution (2014)[]

The-Shield-vs-the-Wyatts

The Shield confronting The Wyatt Family

On the March 17, 2014 edition of Raw, The Shield turned face for the very first time by turning on the "Director of Operations," Kane, as well as on The Authority. Kane had ordered The Shield to attack Raw commentator and WWE Hall of Famer, Jerry "The King" Lawler, but The Shield attacked Kane instead.

In retaliation, Kane and the new members of The Authority, The New Age Outlaws (Road Dogg and Billy Gunn) attacked The Shield on the March 21, 2014, edition of SmackDown, while the group was already being attacked by RybAxel (Ryback and Curtis Axel) and the Real Americans (Cesaro and Jack Swagger) after a conclusive fatal-four-way match to determine the No. 1 contenders for the WWE Tag Team Championship. This set up a match pitting The Shield against Kane and The New Age Outlaws to a 6 man tag team match at WrestleMania XXX.

On April 6, 2014, WrestleMania XXX, The Shield quickly defeated Kane and The New Age Outlaws in just under 3 minutes, finishing off the match by triple-powerbombing the Outlaws, ending with Seth Rollins covering Billy Gunn for the pin.

On the April 7, 2014 edition of Raw, the night after WrestleMania, Kane revealed that Triple H masterminded the attack on the Shield on the previous month's SmackDown (March 21, 2014). As a result, when Triple H was challenging the newly crowned WWE World Heavyweight Champion, Daniel Bryan, for the titles, Bryan had been attacked by Kane, Randy Orton, and Batista, and as it seemed Triple H was going in for the kill, The Shield interrupted the match and turned on Triple H, chasing the other wrestlers away to protect Bryan.

On April 8, 2014, edition of Main Event, The Shield finally defeated The Wyatt Family in a six-man-tag-team-match, after losing to them 2x. Three days later, The Shield would later save Bryan again from Kane, Randy Orton, and Batista, then later giving a triple-powerbomb to Kane.

On the April 14, 2014 edition of Raw, after The Shield had ambushed both Batista and Randy Orton earlier in the night, the trio was forced to face 11 other wrestlers in a 3-on-11 handicap match. The match ended in a no contest, after the match descended into a brawl, where the 11 wrestlers completely overwhelmed The Shield. Afterwards, The Shield proceeded to receive another beating from Triple H, Randy Orton, and Batista, who had just reformed their old stable, Evolution, minus Ric Flair, who was the mentor of the group.

On the April 18, 2014 edition of SmackDown, Triple H forced The Shield into competing against Evolution, at Extreme Rules, which will take place on May 4, 2014.

On the April 21, 2014 edition of Raw, The Shield called out Evolution, exclaiming boldly to them that they will defeat them. They also issued an ultimatum to Evolution. As they were about to attack Evolution, the entire Raw roster came in and backed up Evolution. Triple H sternly warned The Shield, "In life, you either adapt, or you perish. That...is Evolution".

On May 4, 2014, Extreme Rules, The Shield defeated Evolution in a triple threat match in what was a very intense brawl, with Roman Reigns pinning Batista after performing a Superman Punch and then a Spear. Meanwhile, Ambrose and Rollins were fighting Triple H and Randy Orton outside the ring and into the crowd up until they reached the entrance. As HHH and Orton were beating up Ambrose, Rollins jumped off the stand and onto HHH and Orton.

On the May 5, 2014 edition of Raw, the night following Extreme Rules, Ambrose lost the U.S. title to Sheamus in a 20 Man Battle Royal (as ordered by The Authority) ending his historic 351 day reign.

On June 1, 2014, Payback, The Shield once again defeated Evolution in a rematch in a No Hold Barred 6-Man Elimination Tag Team match. Like Extreme Rules, the match was a very intense brawl, with Evolution and The Shield at absolute war. At one point in the match, Evolution had incapacitated Ambrose and Rollins at the stage and later incapacitated Reigns in the ring. All 3 members of Evolution then put Reigns on top of the steel steps, took off his vest, and started to savagely whack Reigns' back with Singapore Canes as Reigns was held down by Orton and Triple H. Afterwards, they took Reigns to the stage where Rollins and Ambrose were, and started to beat up Ambrose and Reigns once again. Then, out of nowhere, Rollins from atop the titantron, jumped on Evolution and Reigns (accidentally). The match later concluded with all three members of Evolution being eliminated by an individual member of The Shield, and The Shield won without losing a single member. Eliminations were:

  • 1. Batista - Pinned by Seth Rollins after a Spear from Roman Reigns
  • 2. Randy Orton - Pinned by Dean Ambrose after a Dirty Deeds on a steel chair
  • 3. Triple H - Pinned by Roman Reigns after a Spear

Seth Rollins Betrays The Shield and rejoins The Authority (June 2, 2014)[]

The following night, on June 2, 2014, edition of Raw, Triple H declared that he will beat The Shield and take them out of the equation, no matter what the cost. However, Batista was tired of losing matches and demanded to Triple H for a match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. The very reason as to why he returned to WWE is that he wanted to regain the championship. However, due to the reigning champion Daniel Bryan's inability to compete due to post-neck surgery, Triple H denied Batista a chance for the title. In response, Batista said, "I understand...and I quit." to Triple H and walked out on Triple H and Randy Orton, thus breaking away from Evolution, as well as leaving WWE altogether again.

Seth Rollins betraying The Shield and joining Evolution (Raw - June 2, 2014)

That same night, as The Shield went face-to-face with Triple H and Randy Orton, Seth Rollins, with a steel chair in hand and as Triple H revealed his "Plan B," Rollins hit and attacked both Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns with a steel chair, thus, betraying The Shield. Triple H later intervened and hit Reigns and Ambrose with his Sledgehammer. He shook hands with Triple H and re-joined The Authority with him and Randy Orton. With this defection, Seth turned heel once again

Aftermath and Post-Shield (2014 - present)[]

On the June 9 episode of Raw, Rollins described his heel turn as severing a business relationship and that he had destroyed "his own creation" to further his own interests, while Ambrose and Reigns (still labelled as the Shield) teamed up with John Cena to defeat the Wyatt Family.

While Ambrose and Reigns did not fall out with each other, they did begin to take separate paths, as Ambrose declared his intentions to take revenge on Rollins while Reigns set his sights on the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. On the June 20 episode of SmackDown,, Ambrose debuted new theme music while no longer wearing the Shield's attire.

By this time, Rollins had also changed his ring attire and theme music, while Reigns retained the Shield's ring attire and gained a slightly remixed version of the Shield's theme music. This indicated that Ambrose and Reigns were working on their own and that the Shield had quietly disbanded. On the June 24 episode of Main Event,, Reigns confirmed that he was on his own and no longer with the Shield, cementing the group's dissolution. Reigns and Ambrose continued to support each other publicly and were infrequently placed together in tag-team matches while pursuing their individual goals in singles competition, including one match against Rollins and Big Show on the January 9 episode of SmackDown.

At the end of 2014, Pro Wrestling Torch writer Shawn Valentino labeled the Shield as a "three-headed dragon" and the seventh top WWE story of the year. He wrote that the Shield "was one of the coolest acts in wrestling in recent years, and most fans believed they were broken up prematurely [...] That being said, each member of the Shield has made their mark, and they all look like they will be big stars in the future".

Rollins would be the one to finally win the Money in the Bank contract at Money in the Bank, and his rivalry with Ambrose continued for several months, including matches at SummerSlam and Hell in a Cell. Reigns meanwhile continued his pursuit for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and continued his rivalry with Orton through to SummerSlam, and was then sidelined with an injury before his match against Rollins at Night of Champions. Following his return, Reigns won the 2015 Royal Rumble match, earning the right to face Brock Lesnar for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in the main event of WrestleMania 31. During the match, Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank contract, turning the match into a triple threat. Rollins then pinned Reigns to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, making him the first of the three former Shield members to become world champion.

At Elimination Chamber, Roman Reigns saved Dean Ambrose from an attack by The Authority, then the two exited the arena by going up the ramp. The next night on Raw, Dean Ambrose returned the favor by saving Reigns from The Authority.

The Shield made a brief reunion in the Survivor Series 2016 event. when Ambrose & AJ Styles were being separated from security after Ambrose assaulted Styles, Reigns & Rollins attacked the security guards and the three hit the Triple Powerbomb on Styles through the announce table.
