Your life in exchange of... A Promise!
~ Carola
If i let you go you must swear you never say you saw me, never say how i speak, never tell anyone how i look, NEVER repeat what i've said. A promise FOREVER.
~ Carola

Carola is a monstrous living gargoyle and an antagonist in the 1990 horror film anthology Tales From The Darkside: The Movie as well as the main antagonist of film's story A Lover's Vow.

Her human form was portrayed by Rae Dawn Chong.

Story[]

A young boy who is kidnapped by a cannibalistic witch tells her the third story after telling her two other stories earlier in the film to keep her from taking his life.

The story begins with a struggling artist named Preston, whose career in art is failing and because of it, his agent drops him, after having a few drinks with his friend Jer. Jer tries to take an intoxicated Preston home, but out of nowhere, a gargoyle-like creature appears in the shadows. Jer pulls a gun and tries to counter it but finds himself overwhelmed and dismembered by the creature. Previously, the creature was a gargoyle that was built in front of Preston's apartment and had secretly been watching him and gradually fell in love. The creature corners Preston, who starts begging for his life. Eventually, the gargoyle tells him that it will spare his life if he promises never to tell anyone about what he saw. A traumatized Preston agrees. He soon meets a woman named Carola in the street; they go home to his apartment and have sex. Through some of Carola's business connections, Preston's art career improves significantly.

The two marry and have children: ten years later, they prepare to celebrate their tenth anniversary together. However, Preston is still haunted by the memory of the incident with the gargoyle. Finally unable to handle the stress anymore, he tells Carola everything and even shows her various art pieces he created about the gargoyle for the past decade. Carola acts as if she doesn't believe it but suddenly cries out "You PROMISED that you would never tell!", revealing herself as the gargoyle from ten years ago. She loses her human appearance and begins the grotesque transformation back--Preston begs her to stop, but Carola sadly says she can't anymore. Elsewhere, the two children scream and begin their own transformations.

Preston is only able to look on in horror as he sees Carola's gargoyle appearance along with their two children now being gargoyles as well. He tells Carola that he loves her, which Carola confirms, but adds that since he broke their vow, he has sealed their fates. She bites him in the neck, killing him, and flies off with the children to another rooftop, where they mourn the loss of Preston and become stone once more.

Trivia[]

  • Tales From The Darkside: The Movie segment "A Lover's Vow" is based on the Japanese folklore Yuki-onna but the writer Michael McDowell decided the antagonist of the story should be a gargoyle instead of a ghost.
  • Carola was placed as a statue and was facing directly to Preston's appartment, that means she was aware of everything he was doing and about his personality. She fell in love with him, this is also the reason she killed Jer. And only this vow allowed Carola to live as a human. And if the vow's broken she will turn back into the Gargoyle she was.
