Villain Overview

Woman: Are you okay? Do you want me to call 911?
T-X: I like this car.
Woman: What are you...?
~ The T-X's first appearance.
John Connor was here. Where did he go? Tell me, where did he go?!
~ T-X demanding John Connor's whereabouts from Katherine Brewster.

The T-X, also known as the Terminatrix, is the main antagonist of the Rise of the Machines Timeline of the Terminator franchise.

She is a powerful endoskeleton-mimetic-polyalloy-hybrid Terminator sent by Skynet to hunt down and eliminate human Resistance leader John Connor and all his would-be future allies, including his childhood friend and eventual wife Katherine Brewster.

In her default form, she was portrayed by Kristanna Loken. While disguised as Scott Mason and Katherine, she was portrayed by Mark Famiglietti and Claire Danes (who also played Tracy Brandt in Law & Order) respectively.

Biography[]

Terminator 3: Eyes of the Rise[]

In 2031, the T-X was battle-tested by Skynet against several other Terminators and by Skynet itself. The T-1002 engaged the Terminatrix in hand to hand combat in the Skynet Central Core, using its mimetic polyalloy components to develop stabbing weapons all across its body. The T-X was able to gain the advantage through a combination attack utilizing her internal buzz saw to remove the spikes and later destroyed T-1002 with a direct impact from her plasma cannon.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines[]

The Terminatrix arrived on July 24, 2004, in a clothes shop with mannequins, melting them and a glass frame on arrival. Assuming the form of a naked woman, it walked out of the shop and approached a confused lady, admiring her car before killing her and taking her belongings, including a red leather jacket, red leather pants and black leather boots. The Terminatrix then went on to killing any of John Connor's future lieutenants, including Kate Brewster and her father Robert Brewster. However, when she coincidentally found Connor, who had been formerly untraceable due to "living off the grid", and she made him her priority target.

At the Cyber Research Systems facility, the Terminatrix injected nanobots into the T-1s to have them protect Skynet the moment it got control of the entire U.S. defense grid. It then killed Robert before going after John and Kate. They managed to trap her in a particle accelerator before going to Crystal Peak, where they were told Skynet's central core was supposedly located.

The Terminatrix broke free of the accelerator and followed them, losing most of its polyalloy skin and half its lower body in the process. She grabbed John, determined to complete her mission but a T-850 unit sent by Kate from the future destroyed them both with its remaining hydrogen fuel cell with a remark of "You are terminated!" also avenging the deaths of the humans she had killed. Despite the T-X's destruction, she has succeeded into helping Skynet become sentient to declare war on mankind, thus Judgement Day has finally occurred.

Personality[]

The T-X appears to possess a very limited emotional range (as all Terminators do), which she exhibits even when she is alone, as opposed to displaying emotion to ingratiate herself with humans. Such behavior can be seen during the chase scene when she exhibits frustration and also performs a surprised double-take upon realizing the T-850 is still in pursuit. She appears to exhibit a fear response just before the T-850 destroys her with one of his hydrogen cores and manages to reform part of her human face with her remaining mimetic polyalloy to make a horrifying face while trying to escape.

Early in the film when she identifies blood belonging to her "primary target" John Connor, the T-X appears to react with an expression akin to a gasp of excitement. She also shows satisfaction as she sadistically smiles once she defeats the T-850 during their battle in the bathroom and when she thinks she had beaten him during their road battle. The T-X is also the only machine to make growling noises when she is angered or frustrated.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Hybrid Polyalloy Assembly: The T-X is constructed from a solid metal endoskeleton with an outer coating of mimetic polyalloy, effectively making it a combination of the T-800 and T-1000 Terminator models.
  • Shapeshifting: Like the T-1000, the T-X can shapeshift and assume the appearance of any human it samples through touch. However, because its liquid metal is built around an endoskeleton, it cannot shapeshift into non-humanoid forms.
  • Onboard Weaponry: The T-X's primary feature is its array of onboard weaponry built into its endoskeleton. These weapons include a plasma cannon, a buzzsaw and a flamethrower, and can be selected by the T-X via its heads-up display at any time. Once selected, the chosen weapon can be used by the T-X retracting the polyalloy around its arm and rearranging the endoskeleton beneath into the necessary shape.
  • DNA Profiling: By sampling an individual's DNA via tasting their blood, the T-X is capable of running a genetic profile and identifying the individual the sample came from.
  • Superhuman Strength: The T-X has superhuman strength at least equal to that of a T-850 as it is able to hold its own against one and overpower it with ease.
  • Superhuman Durability: The T-X is highly durable against most methods of attack. It is notably more sturdy against gunfire than the T-1000, as its endoskeleton can absorb the kinetic impacts more effectively. However, it is vulnerable to magnetism, which can restrain it and remove the polyalloy from its endoskeleton.
  • Accelerated Healing Factor: The T-X can rapidly heal from any damage inflicted to its polyalloy. However, it cannot regenerate damage to its endoskeleton.
  • Superhuman Speed: The T-X can run at superhuman speeds, enough so to keep up with moving vehicles.
  • Technopathy: The T-X can interface with other machines in multiple ways. Shortly after arriving from the future, it uses a cellular telephone to access the Internet via dialup connection. Later, it uses a device in its finger to inject nanomachines into multiple other machines, such as cars, the T-1 Terminators, and the T-850, overwriting their programming and making them act as drones according to its will.

Abilities[]

  • Combat Proficiency: The T-X is skilled at hand-to-hand combat. It is able to defeat the bulkier T-850 in a fight, albeit with some challenge.
  • Expert Driver: The T-X is adept at operation of different types of vehicles, and can control multiple at once through use of its nanomachines.
  • Expert Pilot: The T-X was able to catch up to John Connor and Katherine Brewster at Crystal Peak with a helicopter, which it then crashed into the base in an attempt to kill them.
  • Marksmanship: The T-X is skilled in the use of both traditional firearms and the plasma cannon built into its endoskeleton.
  • Stealth: The T-X possesses significant stealth abilities, which it used to infiltrate the Cyber Research Systems facility, reprogram the T-1s, and nearly assassinate Robert Brewster before being detected.

Trivia[]

  • It is unknown if T-X endoskeletons are exclusively female models or if there were/are male (in the sense of endoskeletal structure and programming) counterparts, as the mimetic sheath only grants aesthetic camouflage. It is feasible, given the advanced nature of this series, that such "male models" exist, though this has not been touched upon by either the films or the comics.
    • One possible reason as to why only female models have been encountered could be, is that it is easier for slender female endoskeletons to disguise as both male or female humans with the aid of their mimetic polyalloy, as opposed to bulkier male endoskeletons which would only be able to disguise as male or bulky female humans.
  • In the film's novelization, the T-X is equipped with muscles, tendons, blood, skin and hair.
  • The Model T-X was probably designed to terminate renegade Terminators (usually ones that were reprogrammed by the Resistance), that were no longer working for Skynet and could be a threat to it's existence.
  • The technology of an endoskeleton-based Terminator with mimetic polyalloy outersheath is also applied on the Rev-7s and Rev-9 in the Dark Fate Timeline.
  • T-X's mission to preserve the creation of Skynet is similar to Eve's in The New John Connor Chronicles Timeline.
  • The T-X is the first Terminator introduced onscreen with a default female appearance.
  • A controversial theory is that the T-X used her nano-machines to give Skynet its sentience. Due to her almost infinite connection to the computer databases, it is feasible to assume that the reprogramming extended from the vehicles into the computer networks, as seen in the worldwide blackout that prompted Skynet's dominion and self-awareness. If so, then the franchise hinges on not one but two predestination paradoxes, the first being the necessity of Judgement Day. Otherwise, Kyle Reese would have no reason to travel back in time to sire John in the first place if there was no Judgment Day. John Connor's very existence is tied to Judgement Day happening.
    • However, this happens in an alternate timeline where Judgement Day is inevitable, so this theory could only be true in the Rise of the Machines and Kyla's World Timelines, as those are the only timelines in which she exists.
  • Many fans believe that she exists in the Salvation Timeline just because the T-850 was sent back in time to protect John and Kate in Terminator Salvation: The Final Battle. Unlike the T-1000, however, she doesn't appear nor is mentioned as if she doesn't exist. And while the T-850 was reprogrammed by Dr. Serena Kogan and sent back to protect Kate and John, nothing in the comic's context indicates she's the reason their lives were in danger, with the T-850 most likely being sent to make sure they would survive Judgement Day in 2003.
    • The comic also established that in the Salvation Timeline, every change to the timeline affects the future immediately after someone is sent back to the past. So if the T-X did exist in that timeline and was sent either by Skynet or Thomas Parnell, then John and Kate would be dead before the comic's end if she was sent back in time.
  • The role of the T-X was originally written to be played by a man. Vin Diesel was even the studio's top choice at the time. It was then decided that the T-X's default form should be played by a woman in subsequent rewrites.
  • To prepare for the role, Kristanna Loken had to put on 15 pounds of muscle. She also took a mime class to prepare for her part because her character had so few lines, so she had to learn to communicate through facial expressions and body gestures.
  • The T-X's breast inflation scene took several takes because the air bladders underneath Kristanna Loken's bra made by the effects team didn't work properly. Sometimes one of the bladders popped or one would fizzle out.
  • During the filming of the T-X's arrival, Kristanna Loken spent one night nude in the middle of Beverly Hill's Rodeo Drive. During the filming, a piece of glass got stuck under her foot because of her walking barefoot on the street.
    • Kristanna Loken talked about her nude scene. "There was no way out of that scene," she laughs. "Everyone knows the Terminators are transported through time and arrive naked, so it was justified. The only problem was that there were so many tourists. The challenge was to shoot the scene without providing too much of a peep show. But I didn't mind. As an actor, you try to be as daring as possible.".
  • Kristanna Loken practiced at a firing range, she had martial arts training, and had extensive mime training in preparation for her role as the T-X. She also practiced running in two-inch heels. She fell ill during the filming of the cemetery scene because of all the running that she had to do, but a stuntwoman carried out the jump that the T-X does to the top of the car that the Terminator, John Connor, and Kate are driving away from the cemetery.
  • Kristanna Loken's most challenging scene was when the T-X was stuck to the particle accelerator. It was difficult because she had to go from running to being spreadeagled in an instant without interruption. And because she had to keep such a rigid posture, she wound up with bruises up and down her arms for weeks afterward.
  • Kristanna Loken loved the leather jacket, leather pants and leather boots that she wore.
