Shelley Marsh is a supporting character in the long-running adult animated series South Park and a supporting antagonist of the 2014 video game South Park: The Stick of Truth.
She is the thirteen-year-old (formerly twelve-year-old) daughter and eldest child of Randy and Sharon Marsh, the older sister of Stan Marsh, and is often portrayed as a violent bully, though on rare occasions she can show a kinder side, although this seldom lasts long. While earlier seasons of the show often portrayed her as a violent bully who loved to beat up her younger brother, later seasons have focused on Shelley's dominative and assertive personality, as well as her relationship with her father Randy.
She was previously voiced by the late Mary Kay Bergman in Series 1-3, Mona Marshall (who also played Krailoni in Disney's Treasure Planet) and Eliza Schneider. She is currently voiced by April Stewart.
Personality[]
Though she doesn't seem like a complex character, Shelley Marsh has more about her upon first glance than many would assume. In the early seasons of the show, she was often portrayed as Stan Marsh's personal antagonist, often beating up and humiliating the boy on many occasions, much to her personal and somewhat sadistic enjoyment.
However, deep down, she does truly care about her brother, and in her debut episode "An Elephant Makes Love to a Pig", Shelley lied to her and Stan's parents, Randy and Sharon, about the mutant Stan clone that was running rampant throughout the town of South Park about the clone being Stan's fault to protect him (though at the end of the episode, she goes back to beating him up). In "Cat Orgy", when having to babysit Eric Cartman for the night, she reveals to the obese child that, after being dumped by her 22-year-old boyfriend Skyler Morse for refusing to have sex with him, she's actually insecure about her looks and how no one likes her school, possibly revealing that deep down, Shelley wants to change and become a better person, but is either too unsure or scared to do anything about it.
In "Pre-School", when out of options on how to deal with the bully Trent Boyett, Stan, Kyle, Kenny, and Cartman go to Shelley for help, and she vows to protect the boys from Trent on the condition that they come clean about who caused the fire that caused the boys' preschool teacher, Miss Claridge, from burning up. This shows that Shelley may care about the way her brother is growing up and wants to teach him about taking responsibility for his actions. Her nicer side was further explored in the episode "Broadway Bro Down", in which she defended and eventually befriended a wimpy boy, naked Larry Feegan. Unfortunately, Feegan had died at the end of that episode.
Videogames[]
South Park: The Stick of Truth[]
Shelley is named "The She-Ogre" by Stan. When The New Kid first goes into her room without Stan as a buddy, Shelley threatens New Kid and sends him out of
South Park: The Fractured But Whole[]
Shelley can be seen at the Marsh Residence. She is found in the living room, laid on the sofa, using her phone. The player can take a selfie with her, however, she will only agree to do so at Level 7 Influencer. When the player turns off the TV in the Marsh's house, she will shout at the player. When the player unclogs the toilet with the Sandblaster Buddy skill, she will post on Coonstagram on how the Marsh’s toilet is covered in poo.
Family[]
Stan Marsh[]
Stan is Shelley's younger brother. She used to beat him up much of the time, but was not seen doing so for a time. She did start punching him repeatedly in "Over Logging", however, when she thought of how her online boyfriend might worry about her if they could no longer e-mail each other. To date, this episode is the only instance in which her violence towards Stan is noticed by their parents, as Randy runs over and tells Shelley to calm down. Shelley and Stan may have resolved their sibling rivalry, as Shelley has not shown any violence towards Stan since "Over Logging". In "PC Principal Final Justice", she threatens to shoot Stan, blaming him for Randy and Sharon's disregard for her, in favor of him.
Sharon Marsh[]
Sharon is Shelley's mother. Of all the grownups in the family, Shelley seems closest to Sharon. In Season 1, Sharon doesn't care if Shelley abuses her brother Stan. In "Over Logging", however, Sharon forces her daughter to turn off the computer. In California, she scolds Shelley for snatching Stan's tickets. In "PC Principal Final Justice" she accuses Sharon of favoring Stan over her.
Randy Marsh[]
Randy is Shelley's father. He is usually seen interacting with Stan, but he and Shelley have spoken to each other several times. She was frustrated by Randy recording ridiculously everyday family antics, saying "Turn it off, Dad!".
Their relationship has deteriorated quite a bit over the years. Shelley accused Randy of not trying to get to know her in "PC Principal Final Justice". Things between the two become even more strained once the family moves to Tegridy Farms.
Marvin Marsh[]
He is Shelley's paternal grandfather. She seems to love him a lot, because when she thought Stan was trying to kill him, she grew even angrier than usual at him.
Jimbo Kern[]
He is Shelley's uncle. They have never interacted onscreen.
Flo Kimble[]
She was Shelley's maternal great-aunt. Aunt Flo gave Shelly a television/CD player/surround sound home theater for Halloween, before she was killed by the evil goldfish she gave Stan.
Roy[]
Roy was Shelley's stepdad. After Sharon divorces Randy in "Clubhouses", she stays with Roy. They stayed together until Sharon dared Randy to have sex with her and they make up. Shelley and Roy never interacted onscreen, as Shelley was absent from "Clubhouses".
Trivia[]
- Shelley is based on Trey Parker's real life sister, Shelley Parker. As recounted in the commentary for "An Elephant Makes Love to a Pig", Trey claims she used to beat him up, once even tossing him down a flight of stairs. He also recounts in the commentary how, on one occasion, she took the fall when he clocked up expensive phone calls, as evidence she did care about him.
- Stan wishing his mutant clone could attack Shelley is also based on Trey's childhood fantasy of a larger version of himself beating up his sister.
- According to Stan, Shelly does not like jewelry. However, she was seen wearing a necklace at her date with Larry in "Broadway Bro Down" and it is likely that she has changed her attitude around jewelry some time before South Park: Post Covid: The Return of Covid, as she is seen wearing some as an adult.
- Her name is spelled Shelley, the same spelling as Trey's real-life sister, however many official sources including the South Park Studios website and South Park: The Stick of Truth spell her name Shelly.
