“ | People, Pokémon, all life depend on the sea. So, Team Aqua is dedicated to the expansion of the sea. Don't you agree? What we are doing is a magnificent undertaking. | „ |
~ Archie explaining Team Aqua's goals to Brendan/May. |
Team Aqua (in Japanese: アクア団 Aqua-dan, literally Aqua Gang) are the main antagonists in Pokémon Sapphire and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, supporting protagonists in Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Omega Ruby, and one of the two main antagonists (alongside Team Magma) in Pokémon Emerald.
Biography[]
Team Aqua's goal is to awaken Kyogre, the legendary Ocean Pokémon, so they can use its powers to expand the sea, as they believe this will benefit humans and Pokémon alike. They are bitter rivals with Team Magma, because they have opposite goals.
The team is headed by Archie and his two immediate subordinates Matt and Shelly. All of their grunts wear sailor uniforms, and they prefer to use poison/dark and water-type Pokémon, such as Zubat, Poochyena and Carvanha.
Differing greatly from other villainous groups in the series such as Team Rocket and Team Galactic, Team Aqua can be seen more as a group of fanatics than real criminals, as they have a seemingly more altruistic goal instead of working solely for their own personal gain. They are also much more organized, since their grunts follow direct orders from their superiors instead of having their own agenda like Team Rocket.
Pokémon Masters[]
Team Aqua makes their first full appearance in Pokémon Masters in the Hoenn-themed chapter of the second arc of the main story, with Archie and his admins standing before the team's grunts. Matt makes the suggestion to his peers on the idea of using Kyogre to destroy their rivals, to which Shelly vetoes due to it being too dangerous.
Despite this action not going through, the members of Team Magma and Team Aqua still find and battle each other in a nearby town, causing Brendan, May, and Wally to go investigate. This duel eventually subsides in a draw, as the leaders of both groups lose interest in their unsatisfactory brawl. Even Groudon and Kyogre demanding they fight is broken up by the arrival of Rayquaza, which causes the two to flee. Due to this, the leaders of both teams decide to make the plans of finding their lost legendarys.
Team Aqua next appears on a beachside being commanded by Matt, to which a grunt (manipulated by Proton) gives Matt information on Kyogre's whereabouts and the idea to make a sync pair with it himself. While this goes on, Zinnia goes with Archie and Shelly to their base to warn them of the ongoing manipulation by Team Rocket, something they are first skeptical to, but later take interest in. This fear comes to reality when Matt comes possessed by dark energy and is made to attack grunts of Team Magma in a rage, requiring Brendan to step in and fight him off. Faced with the challenge of the admins wielding legendary Pokémon and their vicious trance, the remaining members of each team work together in order to defeat Groudon and Kyogre, using the ability of reasoning to stop their assault. However, the rampaging legends (and in turn, the berserk state Courtney was) was stopped through Steven and Zinnia using their combined powers to destroy an incoming meteor and a device Team Rocket used to make the Pokémon become uncontrollable. After learning of Team Rocket's involvement in the incident, the two rival teams decide to call a truce, putting their rivalry to the side in order to protect Pasio.
