I'm working for justice, to give millions of starving men, women, and children a chance at more than just subsistence. To end the civil war your country interrupted so long ago. And yes, for a united, prosperous Korea.
~ Kang Yeonsak revealing his motives to President Asher.

Kang Yeonsak (Korean/Chosŏn'gŭl: 강연삭, Gang Yeon-sag) is the main antagonist of the 2013 action film Olympus Has Fallen, the first installment of the Has Fallen film trilogy.

He was the leader of Koreans for United Freedom, a paramilitary group of North Korean soldiers and hackers who aimed to make North Korea (and to a lesser extent, himself) earn the respect of everyone worldwide by killing or intimidating them.

While most of the film centers on Kang working to destroy the United States, his true target is South Korea. The plan involved that destroying the country would cripple military support for South Korea, making it easier for his home country North Korea to invade their bordered neighbor. This was also demonstrated when Kang executed South Korean Prime Minister Lee Tae-Woo before the American politicians. NSA Deputy Director Ray Monroe revealed that Kang's mother was killed in his childhood, which drove him to insanity and seek revenge on America.

He was played by Rick Yune, who also played Johnny Tran in The Fast and the Furious, and Zao in Die Another Day.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

As a child born on August 12, 1976, Kang's father was executed for crimes against North Korea. He and his mother were brought across the Korean Demilitarized Zone, but while they were crossing the border, Kang's mother was killed by a U.S. Army landmine. In his adulthood, Kang founded a paramilitary terrorist organization called the Koreans for United Freedom.

He and his group brought uranium enrichment technology from Pakistan to Pyongyang in 2002. In 2004, Kang and his group were responsible for the bombing of the British Embassy in Seoul and were involved in a hostage crisis in Seoul in 2007. He kept himself under the radar to avoid being photographed or identified by Western Intelligence agencies. Then, he blended into the South Korean government and posed himself as a chief of security and primary aide to South Korean Prime Minister Lee Tae-Woo.

Arrival and Reveal[]

Years later on July 6, 2013, Kang remained disguised as the head of security and aide for Prime Minister Lee. To ensure a reunified Korea, he and former Secret Service agent, Dave Forbes, take President Benjamin Asher, Secretary of Defense Ruth McMillan, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Joe Hoenig, hostage in the underground Presidential Emergency Operations Center in the East Wing of the White House. From there, he staged an airstrike attack and have his force engage in taking out federal agents, soldiers, and even civilians caught in the crossfire.

Plan[]

After assassinating Prime Minister Lee, Kang ordered the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Allan Trumbull, to withdraw the U.S. Seventh Fleet and 28,500 soldiers that were actively defending South Korea to allow the civil war to end while also seeking to destroy North America by self-destructing their silo-based nuclear weapons as payback for the untimely death of his mother. To accomplish this, Kang needs three codes from Asher, McMillan and Hoenig that will allow him to activate a highly classified fail-safe U.S. military protocol called Cerberus, which allows U.S officials to self-destruct their ICBM missiles in flight in the event of an inadvertent launch.

Final Fight and Death[]

Kang is eventually stabbed and killed by former Army Ranger-turned Secret Service Agent, Mike Banning, during a brutal fight in the bunker, avenging all those killed during his assault. Mike then deactivates Cerberus in time, saving everyone in America from being killed by nuclear weapons and also saving South Korea from a potential North Korean invasion.

Personality[]

Although on the surface a reasonable and calm government agent, Kang was an insane, vengeful and delusional terrorist mastermind with no empathy, sympathy or redeeming qualities. He was willing to torture, torment and kill anyone who got in his way or whose death could benefit him.

Skills and Abilities[]

  • Leadership: Kang was clearly an extremely skilled leader and planner, being able to plot and execute the first successful attack on the White House since the War of 1812 and doing all of it in just 13 minutes.
    • Planning: Kang was able to find ways to effectively overwhelm and eliminate all of the White House's defences very quickly; slaughtering the Secret Service platoon stationed in the White House, DC Metropolitan Police and a squad of Delta Force operatives.
  • Bilingualism: Kang could speak and understand both Korean and English completely fluently.
  • Weapons Combat: Kang was a skilled fighter with a knife, being able to match and almost defeat Mike Banning in battle.

Arsenal[]

  • Glock 32: Kang's main weapon throughout his attack on the White House was a standard government issue sidearm which he used to kill technicians in the bunker and assassinate the Vice President.

Quotes[]

It's done. I have your commander in chief. Now stand down. I am the man in control of your White House. Now stand your men down.
~ Kang to the cabinet of America's highest ranking officials after he took over the White House.
Can you get them back? Pull up the surveillance archives.
~ Kang when Special Agent Mike Banning shut down the White House's internal cameras.
Looks like you failed again, Mike.
~ Kang Yeonsak's last words.

Trivia[]

  • Because Olympus Has Fallen is partially science fiction, North Koreans in real-life cannot be as dangerous towards the United States or South Korea as Kang Yeonsak. It is virtually impossible for North Korea to make a full-scale invasion on Washington, D.C. or Seoul, as the film depicts. South Koreans have confirmed in legitimate polls that they do not see North Korea as effectively dangerous.
