O.V.U.M. (acronym for Original Visions of Ultimate Monsters) is the main villain and final boss from Gradius Gaiden.
200 years after the Third Bacterian War, this strange entity emerged from the Dead Range, an off-limits dark nebula whose approching was forbidden, after a science vessel inadvertently approached the nebula and disappeared. Shortly after, most of Gradius colony planets were suddenly attacked, with most of their military crushed by this unknown assailant. The Gradius governmnt thus ordered a desperate counterattack to the center of the Dead Range, from where the enemy forces were coming, sending four spacefighters into battle. With the entity's destruction, the nebula disappears and Gradius is once again in peace.
O.V.U.M. takes the shape of some old Gradius bosses, such as the Zelos Force, the Intruder and the Brain Golem, before self-destructing much like previous final bosses in the series. It is unknown what exactly O.V.U.M. is.
