But... the future refused to change.
~ The message shown if the player loses to Lavos when facing it outside of the Ocean Palace encounter, allowing it to destroy the world.
The Devourer of Time will begin to consume all space-time continua... despair and hatred... to return all things to nothingness... that is what it desires.
~ Belthasar describing the true nature of Lavos after it became the Time Devourer.

Lavos (in Japanese: ラヴォス Ravosu) is the main antagonist of the Chrono franchise, serving as the main antagonist of Chrono Trigger and the overarching antagonist of its sequels, Radical Dreamers and Chrono Cross.

An alien parasite which crash-landed on Earth in 65,000,000 B.C., Lavos has three different forms. The first form is the outer shell, which resembles the Peluda, a mythical beast in French mythology. The second form consists of a large humanoid form with two arms. The third and final form is Lavos Core, consisting of three parts: a humanoid center, and two floating 'bits'. Apparently, the absolute core of Lavos is one of these bits, since it can revive its other parts and destroying it defeats Lavos.

After its defeat, the original timeline Lavos is cast into the Darkness Beyond Time, where it merges with Schala to become the Dream Devourer. This merged entity would later mature to become the Time Devourer, the true overarching threat of Chrono Cross as it sought to consume all of spacetime and thus end the multiverse. Balthasar manipulated events in such a way to allow for Searge and his friends to obtain the titular Chrono Cross and finally kill Lavos.

Overview[]

Lavos has an outer shell that resembles a cross between an ant and a sea urchin. This shell is incredibly tough, and considerable force must be used to crack it open. The shell is capable of projecting plasma beams, and can store enough energy to cause a nuclear winter. In the middle of the shell is an eye, where Inside the shell is a cave-like structure that emits faint green light. At the core, there is a creature resembling an astronaut at a desk, which presumably is spawned along with the rest of the body and lives its entire life within the outer shell; this is the true Lavos. Despite its appearance, it is incredibly potent in combat, capable of projecting potent laser beams from turrets in the ceiling as a defense mechanism.

Lavos burrows into the core of a world once it lands on it. It continues to absorb the planet's energy and direct evolution to the point where the inhabitants can create massive power plants, such as nuclear reactors. With this jump-start, it kills all or most of the inhabitants by making the world uninhabitable. It then moves to a point on the surface closest to space, and churns out babies, much like a female rabbit or gerbil (only asexually). These young Lavos can move through space without any mechanical assistance; although the species appears to already be biomechanical by nature.

Biography[]

Chrono Trigger[]

Arrival[]

Lavos felt on Earth in the year 65,000,000 B.C., quickly digging its way through Earth's subsoil. There it resided in order to store power, until in 1999 A.D., it raised to the surface and released all of his power, destroying the planet completely. Lavos came to Earth with the intention of draining its energy so that it could produce genetically enhanced spawn, which would then continue the cycle on other planets. In the North American version of the game, it is claimed once in the series that Lavos directly influenced all technology and life on the planet, evolving the planet's life forms to cultivate it, and make itself stronger. However, the line is absent in the Japanese version, although this is later referenced in Chrono Cross, suggesting that this is the case. In the original timeline, Lavos slept for millions of years, gaining power until 1999 AD, when it emerged and put the world into an apocalyptic state. However, because of the interference of many of the characters, he was summoned at two other points in time—12000 BC and 600 AD. While traveling in 2300 AD, Crono, Marle and Lucca see a video of the Day of Lavos which occurred in 1999 AD, and decide to prevent it somehow. Magus is also after Lavos for destroying his home era of 12000 BC. Eventually, three individuals from across different time periods time traveled to the day of Lavos and defeated the creature, stopping him from initiating the apocalypse.

Darkness Beyond Time[]

After Lavos was killed by Crono's party, only one piece of Lavos known as the Frozen Flame remained on Earth. The alien parasite was sent to the Darkness Beyond Time, seemingly stranded and unable to ever return to life. However, in the void it found Schala, who has also been sent there through a dimension vortex created by the Mammon Machine. Lavos' remaining essence would then forcefully combine with Schala, creating a new being known as the Dream Devourer. Crono's party and Schala's brother Magus eventually traveled to the Darkness Beyond Time in an attempt to destroy it, but even after a lengthy battle the group was eventually defeated. However, their efforts allowed Schala to temporarily break free from Lavos' control and send the party away to safety. Magus then attempts to free her once again but finds that it is impossible. Schala tells him that he cannot save her, before finally sending him away as well. After this, the Dream Devourer would continue gaining power and eventually mature into the Time Devourer, the final form of Lavos and the complete combination of the alien parasite and Schala.

Chrono Cross[]

Now more powerful than ever before, the Time Devourer now had the desire to consume all of space and time itself. The powerful Guru of Reason Belthasar became aware of the threat to the world, and sought to find a way to defeat the the Time Devourer. He discovered that an artifact known as the Chrono Cross could final sever Schala from the essence of Lavos and put an end to the creature forever. To achieve this, he manipulates the events of the entire game in order to make them play out in a specific way, having the main protagonist Serge travel between different dimension and timelines. Through unknown means, the Time Devourer consumed the powerful True Dragon God and assimilated it into itself alongside Schala. The Time Devourer used the six different Dragon Gods that were actually the True Dragon God split into several pieces, and controlled them to try and retrieve the Frozen Flame as that would allow it to once again control human evolution and influence the actions of humanity. Serge eventually arrived to confront the Time Devourer, but rather than try to destroy the beast he used the Chrono Cross artifact in order to sever Schala from the essence of Lavos, finally destroying the monster for good.

The Future Refused To Change[]

If Chrono's party loses to Lavos at any of its three forms outside the Ocean Palace encounter, they receive the bad ending. This shows Lavos destroying the world in 1999 A.D. at 1:24 by rising from the Earth's crust and laying waste the planet. The player is then told that the future refused to change and that they were ultimately unsuccessful. This would have led to the events of the original unaltered timeline in which the majority of all life on Earth was destroyed and the few humans that did survive where forced to live in the damaged domed metropolises. Following this, Lavos would have buried himself into the Earth with his shell becoming a mountain known as Death's Peak, and creating spawn of itself that would one day repeat the same life cycle.

Trivia[]

  • It was named "Lavos" by Ayla, a word she made up from the root words "La" meaning "fire" and "Vos" "big" in the Iokan language. Lavos' true name (if it even had one) is unknown.
  • Early in the game, the characters believe that Lavos created the Time Gates. However, they come to a different realization in one of the sidequests, in Fiona's Forest: due to the timing of when the gates appeared and their significance, the gates may have been created by some other entity reliving its life cycle, flashing back over important memories in its past, which were tied to Lavos.
  • It is heavily implied that Serge may be bound to the Time Devourer itself through his interactions with the Frozen Flame, meaning that had he not defeated the Time Devourer, then he would eventually go on to fuse with the creature in the same way Schala did and thus be granted the power to consume space and time.
    • Based on this, it is possible that the Frozen Flame was in the Ocean Palace, which would explain why Schala had a connection to Lavos during the events of Chrono Trigger and eventually served as the creature's host to become the Time Devourer in Chrono Cross.
    • While the exact amount of time that the Time Devourer and Schala existed in the Darkness Beyond Time together prior to being defeated by Serge is not explicitly stated, we are told that it was over a millennia and based on the existing timeline it could possibly be that Schala was fused with the Time Devourer for over 13,000 years before she was finally freed by Serge.
