Season's bleedings!
~ Santa Claus' famous quote.
Stan: What are you doing? We had a deal!
Santa Claus: Yeah, well, I'm Santa, and maybe now even a dumbass like you can figure out that I'm the bad guy!
~ Santa to Stan after shooting and killing Krampus.

Santa Claus is a major antagonist in American Dad!. Though Santa is known for being a friendly old man who gives presents to children who are good, American Dad! portrays Santa as an evil character instead, to the point he kidnaps and enslaves any lost children who come to the North Pole.

He is voiced by Matt McKenna, who is one of the show's crew members.

Early Life[]

When Santa was a child, he took apart his alarm clock to see how it worked (Ninety North, Zero West).

Seeking ultimate power so he could takeover the world, Santa sought the eyes of the giant Humbabba from the Epic of Gilgamesh thinking that returning them to its body would grant him its power (just as Gilgamesh got power when he killed the giant). He calculated that the Cedar Forest was located in the North Pole and set up shop there. He would spend many years kidnapping children and erasing their parents memories of them with magic candy canes in order to have workers to dig for the eyes and Humbabbas corpse (Ninety North, Zero West).

At some point during or before this, he obtained a magic coat that granted him Christmas magic (Santa, Schmanta). He also got married, and obtained rulership over a civilization of Elves, magic snowmen, and flying reindeer (For Whome The Slay Bells Troll). Somehow, he also became a Christmas icon, seen as a jolly benevolent figure who brings toys to good children on Christmas. This was used as a front for his true mission of finding Humbabba (Ninety North, Zero West).

Santa was also accompanied by a demon named Krampus who would punish naughty children while he gave gifts to good ones. However, Santa hated Krampus and  sharing Christmas with him, especially since he had stock in toy companies and Krampus’ punishment of naughty children reduced his stocks (as naughty children buy the most toys). However, Santa was free to give toys to naughty children as well (which enabled their behavior) after Krampus was imprisoned by Jack Smith as a child (Minstrel Krampus).

Villainous Roles[]

For Whom the Sleigh Bell Tolls[]

When Stan tries to teach Steve how to use a gun, the latter accidentally shoots Santa (whom at first they thought was a Mall Santa). Upon recovery, though his near death was an accident, Santa vows revenge against the Smith family. He later sends an army of elves, reindeer, and snowmen to kill them. At one point Santa nearly killed Stan but Jeff Fisher ended up using his spiked helmet to stab Santa.

They are ultimately forced to retreat at dawn, though Santa declares he will try to kill the Smiths every Christmas Eve, thus bringing them a family tradition. He also extends this to Jeff for his role while loudly declaring that he was a jerk.

Minstrel Krampus[]

After Steve is kidnapped by the demon Krampus, Stan and Roger visit Santa to help rescue him. Santa agrees so that he can kill Krampus, and when he does so he promises Stan a permanent spot on the nice list. However, it is later revealed that he lied, as well as the fact that - while Krampus was only punishing children for love and discipline - Santa was spoiling them with presents so that he could earn money, since naughty children buy more toys than nice ones. After shooting Krampus, he attempts to shoot Stan, but Jack Smith sacrifices himself instead. After Santa and his elves retreat, the blood of Krampus transforms Jack into the new Krampus.

Ninety North, Zero West[]

Santa wishes to awaken Humbaba so that he can obtain his power. To do so, he obtains his eyes through enslaving children, kidnapping Steve in the process. However, things do not go according to plan and he is swallowed by Humbaba. At the end of the episode, he is shown to be still alive.. Only for the next episode to reveal he died almost immediately after.

Santa, Schmanta[]

Santa dies in this episode, much to the Smith's relief, who can now celebrate Christmas once more. However, upon learning Roger has his suit and is the new Santa he reawakens as a rageful zombie and goes on a murderous rampage. The Smiths end up helping him, but instead of being grateful he immediately betrays them and continues the rivalry.

300[]

Santa appears dancing during the song Everyone is Happy in Utopia, possibly redeeming himself... Or least he isn't doing bad things at the exact moment.

Into the Jingleverse[]

Personality[]

In his first appearance and in general, Santa is shown to be extremely ruthless and vengeful, going as far as hunting down and attempting to kill the entire Smith family over an accident that led to his temporary death, while seeming to not mind numerous of his elves and reindeer being killed in the conflict. Though he was willing to spare Jeff since he wasn’t involved in the accident it seemed to be more out of wanting to get rid of one of the Smiths allies.

He later has a comic relief adaption added to his character following his first appearance, and much more explored in his third. But he also becomes more and more villainous over the course of his appearances, later being shown to have been harboring kidnapped children as slaves and numerous of whom have died working for Santa whilst attempting to get Santa's Grand Design plan underway.

Unlike the real Santa, this one seems to have no redeeming qualities. The closest he ever got was when he promised to let Smiths go if they simply listen to his story. But he immediately recaptures them when they politely refuse and he makes them listen to his plans anyway, implying he was never actually gonna release them, just wanted them to think it.

Powers and Abilities[]

While Santa is has incredible resources and elf-power, he is also capable of Christmas magic.

  • Incredible Strength: He is physically strong enough to rip elves into half.
  • Magical Powers: He wears a special suit which are the true source of his Christmas-related powers. When he got his suit back, he was able to transform Hanukkah decorations across the city into Christmas decorations. By putting on his suit, he was completely restored and healed.

Trivia[]

  • Given that Santa states he had an alarm clock as a child (which was invented in 1787) this implies he is over 200 years old at most.
  • The concept of “Santa Claus” first arrived in the U.S. in 1773, inspired by the Germanic Sinter Klaas, and the monk Saint Nicholas which is even older.
  • However, in “Into the Jingleverse” he claims to be 2,000 years old. Which would place him around the same age as the historic Saint Nicholas of whom the idea of Santa evolved from.
