King Dedede is the deuteragonist of the Kirby franchise.
He is an overweight blue anthropomorphic penguin-like being who is the self-proclaimed king of Dream Land, the ruler of the Waddle Dees, and Kirby's arch-rival. Although he was a full-on villain in earlier entries and is frequently described as Kirby's arch-nemesis, Dedede has since evolved into one of the protagonist's closest friends, and his villainous behavior towards him nowadays is usually the result of being possessed or brainwashed by some malevolent force. Dedede also assists Kirby in many of his later adventures, and even tries to risk himself in The Forgotten Land in order to save a few of his Waddle Dees.
He is voiced by Shinya Kumazaki in most appearances and Masahiro Sakurai in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and the Super Smash Bros. franchise.
Physical Appearance[]
King Dedede resembles a penguin-like creature dressed in royal, red finery, with his personal emblem (either a picture of himself performing the peace sign, or, in the anime and later games, just the peace sign alone) embossed on the back of his robe, as well as most of the items or weaponry he owns and/or endorses. King Dedede himself is rather portly, is blue-skinned and has a yellow mouth (which has been depicted as more of a beak).

King Dedede is a very greedy, selfish, conniving and egotistical individual. He is notoriously self-serving and generally never sets out to help Kirby and his allies unless he sees no choice, with exceptions such as in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, where he teams up with the former to collect Magolor's ship parts so that he can go home. Like most of the other inhabitants of Dream Land (with exceptions such as Meta Knight), Dedede is incredibly lazy as well and not very active most of the time.
In spite of his malicious deeds, Dedede is not so much an evil and oppressive tyrant as he is a plain old bully towards Kirby and his subjects. He thus does a lot of nasty things to the people around him, like stealing all of the food in Dream Land for himself and holding on to one of the Crystal Shards in Kirby 64 simply so that Kirby cannot have it. While he is the supposed king of Dream Land, he takes no interest in actually performing administrative functions and takes the role for granted, thus many people just go about their business without any thoughts towards his status. However, he is still willing to do what is right for the betterment of Dream Land, like trapping Nightmare in the Fountain of Dreams and helping stop other villains who threaten Popstar. But, due to his past tricks, Kirby is constantly suspicious of and hesitant to trust Dedede, and usually misinterprets his actions. In some games, mostly recent ones, he decides to fight on Kirby's side out of his own volition rather than out of desperation, and also is able to convince others to fight for the greater good, as seen in the Subspace Emissary mode of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, where he convinces Bowser to aid him and other fellow heroes in defeating Tabuu. He also greatly cares for the Waddle Dees. A great example of this is seen when he regains control of himself and reunites with his servants and Kirby in Kirby and the Forgotten Land, after which many members of the Beast Pack descend on the group to stop them from reaching Lab Discovera. While they all try to escape by going through an elevator, Dedede notices that a Waddle Dee had fallen behind after tripping. Rather than save himself, Dedede goes back and throws the Waddle Dee through the closing doors and prepares to fight the Beast Pack to hold them off, showing that he can be selfless.
It would also seem that Dedede is extremely jealous and possessive of Kirby, something that led him to train to be able to inhale and float as Kirby does. He and Kirby often compete in ways other than just battling, such as various races and side games (Dedede may be one of the only characters in the series whose appetite can rival Kirby's). Their constant rivalry is rather one-sided on Dedede's part, as he constantly schemes up ways to outdo or beat Kirby, while the latter appears to have no interest in conflicting with him for no reason. This is displayed fully in Kirby Battle Royale, where Dedede, out of sheer pettiness, outright refuses to allow Kirby to win his Cake Royale tournament and claims that he himself is the only one fit to win. He also has a liking for tricks and mischief, as seen in a trailer for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, where he pranks Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong by masquerading as King K. Rool, much to his own amusement, only to be swatted away by the real K. Rool immediately afterwards.
Powers and Abilities[]
King Dedede is quite strong, but also able to leap high into the air and run surprisingly fast despite his size. He can also puff himself up to float through the air and even perform a version of Kirby's inhale attack, though he can't gain copy abilities. Dedede fights mainly with his large hammer and while most of the time it is a standard hammer, it has occasionally had other built-in upgrades, such as a jet booster to amplify his strikes and built-in missile launchers and flamethrowers. Dedede also uses other physical attacks, like a powerful ground pound from out of the air and sliding on the floor. King Dedede is quite possibly the (physically) strongest Kirby characters, as in all games he has been playable in he always has the most power, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Snake's conversation with Colonel reveals he can level an entire building, and given that he is only at least a foot taller than Kirby (who's only eight inches), this is a large incredible feat (though this may be because his hammer is mechanical in Brawl, and he's significantly larger and taller in Brawl).
Biography[]
Kirby's Dream Land[]

King Dedede and his minions stole all of the food from the people of Dream Land and, either to simply cause strife or demoralize the people, also made off with the Sparkling Stars, which he gave to his various servants to guard. However, Kirby set out to set things right, getting the Sparkling Stars and Dream Land's food back, before engaging Dedede himself. Despite the king's efforts, he was beaten by Kirby and knocked flying through the ceiling of his castle.
Kirby's Adventure/Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[]

After Lord Nightmare took over the Fountain of Dreams to spread bad dreams, King Dedede took the Star Rod that powered it and gave its pieces to his most trusted friends, trapping Nightmare in the fountain unable to do anything. However, these actions also left the people of Dream Land unable to dream, giving Kirby the idea that Dedede was doing his usual mischief upon finding him swimming in the lake around the fountain. As Kirby recovered the Star Rod and replaced it (with Dedede trying to stop him), Nightmare was set free, so Dedede inhaled both Kirby and the Star Rod and spat them into space to take down Nightmare. Kirby then realized Dedede never meant any harm.
Kirby's Dream Land 2[]
King Dedede freed of the Dark Matter.
King Dedede ended up possessed by Dark Matter and it made him destroy the Rainbow Bridges connecting the Rainbow Islands so as to take over Dream Land. Kirby managed to defeat Dedede's minions, before going to face the king himself, who fought him in a strange state of sleep. Kirby managed to win, before facing the Dark Matter that had possessed Dedede, which he destroyed with the Rainbow Sword.
Kirby Super Star/Kirby Super Star Ultra[]

King Dedede is present in three of the eight games of Kirby Super Star: "Spring Breeze", "Gourmet Race", and "The Arena". "Spring Breeze" serves as a simplified remake of the original Kirby's Dream Land, with Dedede following the same role as he did in the former. Dedede's boss fight in "Spring Breeze" appears in "The Arena". In "Gourmet Race", Kirby races against King Dedede across three levels whilst eating as much food as possible. The winner is decided by who earned the most points at the end of all three levels, with bonus points going towards whoever finished first in each race.
In the Nintendo DS remake of Kirby Super Star, Kirby Super Star Ultra, in the added game "Revenge of the King", King Dedede plotted to destroy Kirby once and for all and again stole the Sparkling Stars, so as to lure him into fights with stronger versions of enemies that he had beaten before. When Kirby managed to beat them all, Dedede, calling himself Masked Dedede, took him on, wielding an upgraded mecha hammer he dubs as the Super Dedede Hammer. However, he was once again defeated and sent flying out of his castle. During the credit sequence, Dedede was last seen walking off sadly, with his Waddle Dees following behind him. Masked Dedede later appears as the third to last boss of the "True Arena".
In the sub-game Samurai Kirby, Dedede appears as the penultimate opponent.
Kirby's Dream Land 3[]
King Dedede possessed yet again by the Dark Matter.
King Dedede once again ended up possessed by Dark Matter and fought Kirby and his friend, Gooey, at his castle in the Iceberg. After they defeated him in his normal state, the king developed darker abilities, including a Dark Matter eye on his body. However, Kirby finally managed to defeat Dedede and drive the Dark Matter out of his body.
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[]

King Dedede came across one of the Crystal Shards and started looking at it. Kirby showed up and tried to take it so he could give it to Ribbon, but the king refused to give it up. At that moment, the Dark Matter showed up and, drawn to the Crystal Shard, possessed Dedede. He then attacked Kirby but was defeated and freed of the Dark Matter. Dedede then reluctantly gave up the Crystal Shard and Waddle Dee asks him to come with the group in their quest. Dedede refuses vehemently at first but relents when realizes he does. Dedede eventually accompanied the group to Dark Star and helped Kirby reach 0² so he could defeat it. They all succeeded and were given medals by the fairies of Ripple Star.
Kirby: Squeak Squad[]
When Kirby has his shortcake stolen by the Squeaks, he went to confront Dedede, believing the king was the one who stole it, and managed to beat him. But at that moment, The Squeaks led by Daroach attacked Dedede's castle, stealing his treasure chest and making their getaway. Enraged with Kirby for accusing him and the Squeaks for stealing his treasure, Dedede threw Kirby at the thieves, knocking them into Nature Notch. Though he can be re fought, Dedede is not shown for the rest of the game.
Kirby's Epic Yarn/Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn[]

Dedede was bossing around his Waddle Dees as usual, when he noticed an odd-looking one. He was then attacked by Yin-Yarn, resulting in Dedede and all of his imposter Waddle Dees being sucked into Yin-Yarns' magical sock, bringing him to Patch Land. Eventually, Dedede came across Kirby but suddenly found himself connected to a bizarre marionette-like device that controlled him. Kirby managed to free the king, allowing him to get the sixth strand of Magic Yarn. Dedede later accompanied Kirby, Prince Fluff, and Meta Knight back to the yarn version of Dream Land to defeat the sorcerer.
In the Nintendo 3DS updated port Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn, King Dedede appears as the protagonist of one of the game's sub-games "Dedede Gogogo". In it, the player must have him dive under or bash down obstacles in an automatic side-scroller.
Kirby Mass Attack[]

King Dedede appears as the boss of the third world, Dedede Resort. Here, King Dedede fights the Kirbys in a hot air balloon, throwing bombs at the Kirbys from afar. The Kirbys have to push the bombs back at Dedede's balloon before they explode to damage him. He is refought in Stage 3 of the fifth and final world, Necro Nebula.
Defeating Dedede with only one Kirby clears the checklist task "One-on-One Victor".
Kirby's Return to Dream Land[]

Dedede, along with Bandana Waddle Dee, was chasing after Kirby, possibly playing with him or, as usual, fighting him, when they came across an alien named Magolor, who had crashed his spaceship. They agreed to help him by getting the missing pieces back and succeeded in doing so. Magolor then brought Dedede and the others to his home planet of Halcandra, where they were attacked by Landia. Magolor told them that the dragon was running rampant on Halcandra and Dedede and the others agreed to defeat it for him. But when they succeeded, Magolor revealed that he had been manipulating them to obtain Landia's Master Crown so as to gain infinite power. He headed off to conquer Popstar and Dedede and the others followed with help from Landia, successfully defeating Magolor and making it back to Popstar.
Kirby: Triple Deluxe[]

When a massive Dreamstalk emerges from the ground, it lifts multiple chunks of Dream Land up to the top of the sky, including Kirby's house and Castle Dedede. Kirby reaches the castle and spots an arachnid creature known as Taranza defeat the Waddle Dee guards and capture Dedede, taking him to the top of a series of six floating islands, with the Dreamstalk growing to the next after Kirby defeats the boss of each island. Making it to the last island, Royal Road, Kirby confronts Taranza, who believes Kirby came to save "the hero of the lower world" (Dedede) and controls Dedede using his mechanical mask, hammer and a bunch of strings. Upon defeating Dedede, Taranza realized Kirby was the real hero of the lower world. Dedede awakens after Taranza's master, Queen Sectonia, is defeated by Kirby. However, the evil queen combines herself with the Dreamstalk to take over all of Popstar. Dedede and the People of the Sky use a cannon to fire Kirby through the vines to confront Sectonia. When Kirby ends up snared by Sectonia's vines, Dedede and a reformed Taranza arrive to free him and give him a Miracle fruit to become Hypernova Kirby and finish Sectonia in a final battle. The People of the Sky and Taranza bring Kirby and Dedede back down to the ground to witness the beautiful blooming of the Dreamstalk.
Dedede later becomes the playable character in the Extra Mode minigame, Dededetour, where Dedede (similar to Meta Knight in the Meta Knightmare mode in Kirby's Nightmare in Dreamland, Kirby's Super Star Ultra, and Kirby: Planet Robobot) rushes through every level of the game with his mighty mallet, and faces off against Shadow Dedede and Dark Meta Knight in the Dimension Mirror at the end.
Kirby: Planet Robobot[]
The Access Ark, the mothership of the Haltmann Works Company, appears from the sky and terraforms Dream Land into a mechanical wasteland. Previously playing chess with one of his Waddle Dees, Dedede notices this and fires at the mothership with his castle's cannons, but is easily overpowered by the mechanical artillery and his castle is destroyed. It is later revealed by Susie that the alien invaders managed to collect some of Dedede's DNA and made deranged clones of him, which are promptly destroyed by Kirby. In the ending cutscene following the defeat of Star Dream, Dedede and the Waddle Dees emerge from the rubble of the castle and rejoice to learn that Kirby returned Popstar back to its natural appearance.
Kirby Star Allies[]
When Hyness fails to successfully revive his dark lord Void Termina, the shards of the Jamba Heart from the Divine Terminus scatter across the various planets in the galaxy; among them is Planet Popstar and one of them lands in Castle Dedede, taking possession of Dedede and his Waddle Dee army. Under the shard's influence, Dedede steals the food everywhere in Dream Land similarly to Kirby's Dream Land, and Kirby sets out to return it. Kirby and his group of friends eventually confront Dedede in his castle and battle him, and, during the fight, Dedede absorbs more dark energy from the Jamba Heart shard and becomes incredibly muscular. After his defeat, the Jamba Heart shard flies out of Dedede and he returns to normal. Similarly to Kirby's Return to Dream Land, he can join the Star Allies as a Dream Friend, recruited in the Dream Palace. Alternatively, Kirby can befriend Dedede right away by throwing a heart at him immediately after defeating him.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land[]
King Dedede had been brainwashed by Fecto Elfilis and the Beast Pack into kidnapping the Waddle Dees after being transported to the Forgotten Land. Kirby first encounters and battles him at the end of Winter Horns. While he is defeated, he quickly recovers and kidnaps Elfilin before escaping. He later returns as Forgo Dedede at the end of Redgar Forbidden Zone, wearing a powerful boar mask which makes him stronger, but it also dominates his mind further and it eventually reduces him to a violent, feral animal, running on all fours and using fiery punches. However, Kirby defeats him again, finally snapping him out of his brainwashing. As the Beast Pack approaches, he leaves himself behind by letting Kirby and a few Waddle Dees reach Lab Discovera's elevator, preparing to fight off the remaining forces of the group alone. The game's end credits reveal that Dedede survived this battle, and afterwards, he can be found in Waddle Dee Town relaxing just outside the Colosseum. If Kirby talks to his minions, they'll give him the blueprint for the Masked Hammer copy ability on his behalf.
Other Media[]
Kirby's Pinball Land[]
Dedede appears in the opening scene of the game, falling from the sky and landing on Kirby. He somehow manages to put bumpers between Dream Land and uses this as his advantage to destroy Kirby. After the final battle with King Dedede, he gets knocked out of his castle, similar to the first game. Before Kirby can finish him off, he and the other enemies in the game escape while Kirby chases after them on the Warp Star, starting the game all over again.
Kirby's Dream Course[]
King Dedede steals the stars in the night sky to keep their beauty for himself, causing all of Dream Land to grow depressed. Kirby notices Dedede steal the last star of the sky through a telescope and drops it while fleeing. Using it as a Warp Star, Kirby flies to Dedede's castle to reclaim the other stars. At the end, Dedede pilots the Robo Dedede , but was defeated and Kirby returns the stars to the sky.
Kirby's Avalanche[]
King Dedede can be seen at the end of the Beginners Stages, where he announces the Dream Fountain Cup of the Avalanche tournament. He is later seen at the end of the Finals Stages, where he challenges Kirby for the championship. Should Kirby win, Dedede can be seen crying in the distance of the congratulations screen.
Kirby's Block Ball[]
King Dedede steals the Sparkling Stars yet again and hides them within his castle. He is the boss of Stage 11, which can only be unlocked if Kirby gets a Border Line Clear on all ten stages beforehand. Failing this requirement shows the bad ending screen, where Kirby walks away with a knapsack as Dedede appears in the background and laughs at him.
In the intro of Stage 11, Dedede protects himself with indestructible blocks, only for Kirby to defeat a nearby Kookler and use a Crash item to destroy Dedede's barricade. After Kirby defeats Dedede, he is sent flying out of the castle as the Sparkling Stars escape. In the good ending screen, Dedede can be seen flying in the sky.
Kirby Air Ride[]
King Dedede is a racer in the game using a Wheelie as his vehicle. He can be unlocked by defeating 1,000 enemies, or by clearing the Vs. King Dedede Stadium event in one minute or less.
Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe[]
Dedede is the titular protagonist of the rhythm game where he jumps from drums.
Kirby Fighters series[]
In Kirby Fighters Deluxe, Dedede is the final boss and battles Kirby with smaller replicas of himself called Mini Dededes and Combo Dededes.
In Kirby Fighters 2, Dedede appears as one of the two main antagonists (along side Meta Knight) in the game's Story Mode "The Destined Rivals". In it, the two team up to finally win a battle against Kirby and challenge him to the Buddy Fighters Tower. On the tenth floor of the second chapter, Kirby and his partner battle Dedede and Meta Knight, except they were Waddle Dees in disguise. On the fifteenth floor of the third chapter, Kirby and his partner once again encounter the king and Meta Knight, once again defeating them. They escape further up the tower. On the summit at the thirtieth floor in the fourth chapter, the two once again attempt to defeat Kirby and lose. Despite continuing their battle by eating a Maxim Tomato to reenergize their strength, Kirby once again defeats them.
While taking a walk around Dream Land to wonder what next to do, Dedede notices the Buddy Fighters Tower rise higher in the sky, and has Meta Knight fly him to the summit so they could once again battle Kirby and his partner. On the fiftieth floor, Kirby and his partner reach the summit, where Dedede and Meta Knight were waiting for them. Again, they are defeated and Meta Knight's mask breaks. Determined to defeat Kirby once and for all, Dedede pulls out the Masks of Dark Bonds, and places one on his head while tossing the other to Meta Knight. They become Waning Crescent Masked Dedede and Waxing Crescent Masked Meta Knight and become super powerful, ultimately going out of control. After a grueling battle, the two are defeated. Kirby and his partner form the Buddy Star Blaster and blast the king and knight with a laser into the distance, knocking the masks off of them. Dedede and Meta Knight sadly walk home. After completing Story Mode, Dedede becomes unlockable.
Kirby's Blowout Blast[]
Just like in the first game, Dedede stole not Dream Land's food, but the Sparkling Stars instead. He first fights with his mallet, but after Kirby defeats him, Dedede uses one of the Sparkling Stars to grow massive. Kirby can damage the King by spitting out the stars that come out after smashing his hammer into the ground, but be cautious as Dedede can also inhale, which deals massive damage to Kirby if he is sucked in. After defeating Dedede, he shrinks down to normal size.
In the EX stages after clearing story mode, the final battle is King Dedede's Revenge, where he fights similar although his mallet releases shockwaves when it hits the ground. Should the game be cleared 100%, the giant phase of Dedede's fight turns into Masked Dedede, where he protects his head with a mask that bounces off all attacks except for multiple stars at once.
Kirby Battle Royale[]
Dedede once again comes up with a way to kill Kirby by inviting him to what he calls "The Cake Royale" which is actually a plan to destroy Kirby. He creates a machine called the Kirby Printer, which creates multiple clones of Kirby. He manipulates Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee into competing into a tournament with the reward of a giant cake. In actuality, he wants Kirby to lose from equally-skilled counterparts and be humiliated by all of Dream Land as well as wanting him to be destroyed.
However, Kirby defeats his counterparts and eventually comes challenged by Dedede himself. After losing, he asks Kirby to follow him to the stadium basement, where he unleashes the Dededestroyer Z to end Kirby once and for all. Ultimately, Kirby destroys the robot, launching Dedede into the distance. The ending card shows Dedede with the crown from the cake disappointed watching Kirby eat his prize dinner. After clearing Story Mode, Dedede becomes a playable character with his moveset identical to the Hammer.
Super Smash Bros. series[]
Super Smash Bros.[]
King Dedede, alongside Bowser and Mewtwo, was originally meant to be playable in the first Super Smash Bros. installment for the Nintendo 64, but was cut due to memory limitations. Despite this, he does appear in the Dream Land stage where he flies across the background.
Super Smash Bros. Melee[]
Dedede again can be seen in the background for the Dream Land stage. He also appears in the game as a collectible trophy.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]
King Dedede in Super Smash Bros. Brawl
King Dedede makes his debut as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. His Final Smash is the Waddle Dee Army, where he summons a huge horde of Waddle Dees, Waddle Doos, and Gordos to attack the opponents. He also appears as a major antagonist-turned-anti-hero in the story mode; "The Subspace Emissary".
In the Subspace Emissary, Dedede mistakenly aided the Subspace Army in capturing the Halberd by attacking Meta Knight, not realizing he was keeping him from fighting off the Subspace forces.

Eventually, Dedede learned of Tabuu's plans and the power his Off Waves possessed. Worried that if everyone were to be turned into trophies, then Tabuu would easily take over, Dedede sought a means of stopping his plans. He created a special brooch that acted as a timer before turning heroes turned into trophies back to normal. Dedede ambushed Luigi and turned him into a trophy, apparently to lure Wario in. When Wario tried to take Luigi, Dedede stole Wario's bobsled with the trophies of Ness and Peach/Zelda inside, throwing Luigi in as well. Dedede then hid them inside his castle. He puts brooches on them, giving up his own to put on the princess while planning to make another later. However, Dedede was turned into a trophy by Bowser and his Koopa Troop, who stole Peach/Zelda. After Tabuu turned all of the other heroes into trophies, Luigi and Ness were restored and Kirby was also revived, having eaten the brooch Dedede put on Peach/Zelda. They, in turn, brought back Dedede, who went to Subspace with the others to fight Tabuu, getting Bowser, Ganondorf, and Wario to help them along the way. With the help of Sonic, Dedede and the others defeat Tabuu, releasing most of the areas from Subspace. Dedede is seen along with the other thirty-one fighters standing at cliff, looking at where the Isle of Ancients, which couldn't be restored, once stood.

King Dedede returns as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. He is slightly faster and stronger than his Super Smash Bros. Brawl counterpart. His side special was also changed, as in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Dedede would randomly throw either a Waddle Dee, Waddle Doo, or Gordo. In this game, King Dedede will only throw a Gordo. His Final Smash was also changed from the Waddle Dee Army, to the Dedede Burst. King Dedede inhales enough air, which results in the creation of a mini-tornado. Anyone caught in the mini-tornado will be sucked towards King Dedede. Dedede will then hit the opponent(s) with his hammer two to three times, while it is engulfed in fire. He then finishes the Final Smash by throwing a bomb at the opponent(s).

King Dedede returns as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. While his moveset and abilities remain the same compared to Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, he is slightly faster and heavier than before and his moves have larger hitboxes. His Final Smash has changed yet again, this time featuring Masked Dedede called "Dede-Rush". He will trap one player into a caged wrestling ring and fires missiles and jets from his hammer, before using his hammer to smack the opponent out of the ring. His Classic Mode campaign is called "Royal Rumble", where Dedede battles other fighters with royal titles before a showdown with Master Hand. King Dedede is also one of the many fighters who helps to fight Galeem and Dharkon.
Masked Dedede also makes an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a primary attack-type spirit, who can be summoned using cores from the Reporter & Wrestler and Hammer Bro spirits.

King Dedede is the main antagonist of the Kirby anime series. In the anime, King Dedede (with a more negative and sinister personality) is the tyrannical, evil, cruel, and self-proclaimed ruler of Dream Land, clearly disliked by the people of Cappy Town, aided by his right-hand man, Escargoon, and the arch-nemesis of Kirby. When Kirby arrived on Popstar, Dedede feared that Kirby could threaten his rule and hated him for being more liked by the people. Thus, he continually ordered monsters from Nightmare Enterprises and employed them and various other schemes to deal with Kirby, only for each one to fail. Eventually, Dedede and Escargoon turned on Customer Service, who had manipulated Dedede in all of their dealings, as Kirby and his allies were battling Lord Nightmare (eNeMeE in the English version) and took him down.
Mario Kirby Meisaku Video (aka Mario Kirby Masterpiece)[]
In Kirby's story, he finds a lost puppy separated from his mother. After hearing from the Moon that King Dedede was involved, Kirby rushes to Castle Dedede to rescue the mother, believing Dedede kidnapped her. However, it turns out Dedede was simply treating the mother's sprained paw. Relieved, Kirby departs as Dedede feeds the dogs.

- Dedede's robe has sported two different symbols on the back, him giving a peace sign or a hand giving a peace sign, though the latter has been more commonly used.
- Dedede is one of the most recurring characters in the Kirby games, second to Kirby and Waddle Dee. He is present in every main installment with the exception of Kirby & the Amazing Mirror.
- King Dedede's name in the French versions of the games is Roi Dadidou, König Dedede and sometimes König Nickerchen ("King Nap") in German, Re Dedede in Italian, Kongen Dedede in Danish and Norwegian, Rei Deduzir in Portuguese, Kung Dedede in Swedish, Mfalme Kujitolea in Swahili, Brenin Dedede in Welsh, Rí Dedede in Irish, Dé Dé Wáng (德德王) in Chinese, King De Dede (킹 데 데데) in Korean, Raaja Ka Samarpan (राजा का समर्पण) in Hindi, Rey Dedede in Spanish, and Rex Dedede in Latin.
- Dedede's species has never been outright stated, although he is widely regarded as a penguin.
- Dedede's theme music is used as the theme for boss battles in Kirby Mass Attack.
- His theme is also oddly used during Meta Knight's fight in Squeak Squad.
- In a poll for which characters were to be included in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Dedede came in first. He was originally going to be in the first Super Smash Bros., but was scrapped due to time constraints and memory limitations. However, he does make a cameo appearance in the first game, flying through the background of the Dream Land stage.
- On the Dream Land stage from the Super Smash Bros. series, King Dedede will always appear in the background unless he is participating in a battle. A glitch can occur on the stage in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS where he can appear in the background even if he is participating.
- Early versions of King Dedede showed him not wearing gloves. This was later changed for him to wear tan gloves.
- Dedede is one of the four Super Smash Bros. fighters to have a different Final Smash since every installment when they were introduced to the series; the others being Pit, Zero Suit Samus, and R.O.B.
- In Kirby Fighters 2, Dedede's four battle entrance poses are references to his appearances in other media; these include his Dream Friend pose from Kirby Star Allies, infused with an element from Kirby Star Allies, his Kirby series amiibo figure, and his artwork from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
