It's like this: You wake up and you watch TV. Get in your car and you listen to the radio. You go to your little job or your little school, but you're not gonna hear about that on the 6 o'clock news. Why? 'Cause nothing is really happening. Then you go home and you watch some more TV or maybe it's a fun night, you go out and you watch a movie. I mean, it's got so bad that half the time the people on TV, inside the TV, they're watching TV. And what are all these people watching? People like me.
~ Kevin Khatchadourian

Kevin Khatchadourian is the titular main antagonist of the 2003 Lionel Shriver novel We Need to Talk About Kevin and its 2011 film adaptation of the same name.

He was portrayed by Ezra Miller, who also played Credence Barebone in the Fantastic Beasts film series, the Trashcan Man in the 2020 TV miniseries adaptation of The Stand, the Dark Flash in The Flash, and D.A. Sinclair in Invincible.

Biography[]

Kevin's mother, Eva, takes the role of narrator throughout the book, documenting his actions through letters to Franklin Plaskett, Kevin's father and Eva's husband. In these letters, Eva both details her relationship with her son and her own demons relating to her son. Eva also visits her son in his prison cell, where they interact like hostile strangers.

From a young age, Kevin despises his mother and is obsessed with causing her pain and discomfort, such as spraying ink on her maps and resisting toilet training. He also takes pleasure in harming other teenagers; in grade school, he manipulates a girl with eczema to gouge her own skin. He has no friends and shows no interest in school or after school activities, except for his one hobby, archery.

While Eva sees Kevin for what he is, Franklin is convinced that his son is normal, and makes excuses for everything he does. Kevin in turn manipulates his father by affecting a polite, friendly demeanor. This dual nature eventually leads to both the birth of Celia out of desperation for rekindling for love and Kevin's parents divorcing one another. Kevin could also be responsible for Celia's loss of one of her eyes, either through his manipulation of her to use drain cleaner to clean her eye or him attacking the young child with it.

Regardless of the option, Kevin hearing the idea of the family breaking apart leads him to commit easily his worse actions, being the murder of his sister and his father before turning his murderous aggression towards his school, be this action out of an overwhelmed heart lashing out at those around it or Kevin pulling one last trick on his family to forever destroy Eva's soul.

Eva visits Kevin on the second anniversary of the massacre, shortly before he is to be transferred to Sing Sing. He makes peace with his mother and apologizes for his actions, while admitting that he does not know why he committed the murders. Eva realizes that she at least loves her son.

Personality[]

Kevin is a cold and ruthless young man that sometimes is uncaring of the feelings of others, and driven by self-gain. He displays a basic knowledge of human behavior, though he only uses it to manipulate and gaslight others.

While he can express emotion, it is mostly consisting of anger and frustration. Especially as a child, he would frequently lash out at his mother and her work, resenting her for her fear of him while also expressing sadistic glee in being able to torment her in that way. He is also unable to feel love for others, manipulating and ultimately killing his father and sister despite the two of them adoring him.

Kevin is also extremely misanthropic, going on a killing spree because he disliked his classmates, not because they had bullied him in any way. He is obsessed with being in control, psychologically tormenting his mother even when behind bars.
