Gein is an antagonist from Rurouni Kenshin.

Appearance[]

Gein dons black robes and covers his face with a skull mask with a red dot on its forehead. Under the mask, he has a very scrawny face as he was older than men like Okashira.

Powers and Skills[]

Gein's primary skill is the usage of diamond-edged wires in order to tear through human flesh and break the bones of his victims. He also can use them to control his corpse dolls from any place he is present.

Biography[]

Gein is a strong for his age man descended from a line of puppet masters who refined the arts of construction and mechanics following the medieval era. His m.o. is trying to refine his twisted idea of beauty and joined Enishi to further this goal. Gein first appeared joining up Shishio Makoto during the Kyoto Arc under the alias of Iwanbō as Shishio executed a man who was stealing a sword before the formation of the Six Comrades lead by Enishi.

Misao arrives with several comrades in hopes that they can defeat "Iwanbō", calling him stupid. But the puppet was too thick for their attacks to mean anything. Misao soon witnesses "Iwanbo" beat down her friends but was ordered not to leave her position until the police arrive. When a couple girls defeat one of the Juponagata, a group of ninjas are confident in "Iwanbō" stepping in to fight. When said girls arrive, they witness him turn his head around. This has something to do with "Iwanbo" being a literal puppet. Just then, he bounced away. Following the suicide of a servant loyal to Shishio, "Iwanbō", actually Gein in a puppet body, is shown standing at a cliff and starts to laugh before he joins with a future group.

As Enishi is plotting revenge, Gein rents the group a summer home as opposed to a hotel room as part of the plans while the introduction of second to last two remaining comrades, Banjin and Hyouko, are made while a sixth one is expected to come tonight. However, Yatsume reveals himself within the ceiling as the Six Comrades prepare their vengeance on Kenshin by making his end excruciating as possible.

When several officers fail to shoot at Banjin, Gein uses one of his puppets to blow them away so he and Banjin can rejoin the rest of their group. Banjin attempts to protest this as he wants to kill Sanosuke, but Gein warns that he will get blasted to death if he does not cooperate. As Enishi plans his attack on Kenshin, Gein starts to construct a new Iwanbō unit in the basement of Enishi's quarters as his methods will certainly coincide with Gein's. One week and two days before the attack on the dojo, Gein arrives fully dressed, having gone out for of his "business" we see him holding a bucked containing hair of a person who seemingly died. Just then, Enishi espouses his plans to get revenge for his sister.

Gein accompanies Enishi and his group when they launch a surprise attack on Kenshin and company which prompts Kenshin to tell Kaoru to hide in the dojo. As Kenshin and Sanosuke continue to fend off the invading group, Gein and Enishi come to realize that they might miss their chance for Jinchuu. Gein promptly starts up Iwanbō unit 3 which looks rather froggish as he prepares to fight the warriors opposing Enishi's group. This started with Kenshin, who also finds that the newest Iwanbō unit can absorb blows he deals to it. The puppet proceeds to grapple him with its free joint system, the puppet was also revealed to have the free detachability system to disconnect its arms while connected to rubber.

Kenshin explains to him that he could have utilized his puppet skills for the good of the people, but Gein cares more for the side of battle than helping the people. Kenshin proceeds to resume his fight with him and sever one of the unit's arms and demands a fight with Enishi. However, Gein resumes his attack and strikes Kenshin with a grave injury. Not feeling the severed limbs of his puppet as he only controlled with his fingers, Gein proceeds to move the unit around in an attempt to kill him.

However, Gein is still vulnerable within his puppets, thus he has a barrier made from steel cables to protect him from being stabbed or slashed. Despite this, Kenshin manages to disrupt the mechanism by sticking a rock in the gears. Kenshin proceeds to destroy Iwanbō unit 3. Gein declines fighting Kenshin due to the former's old age.

As Enishi prepares to fight Kenshin, his subordinate Gein appears to announce the time to complete Jinchuu which involves injuring Kenshin in the middle of the fight at the hands of Enishi. After making it seem Kaoru; whom they've kidnapped; died, Enishi talks with him at their hideout, Gein does not appear to be someone who talks with strangers, Gein explains he has nothing to talk about and just wants to demonstrate the full extent of his skills and leaves for the job he intends to do. At the beach a ferry arrives as Gein had been expecting where he meets Wu Hei Shin, a Chinese businessman who brought several boats of cargo. Hei makes it clear he has bodyguards to ensure no one gets close to him. At this point, Kaoru tries to stow away on the ferry to escape the island.

Gein explains to them that Enishi is at the cliff-based house and while the skull-masked man heads to Tokyo while Wu remains on the island. On the Ferry, Gein massacres a small bunch of men as a demonstration of his skill and insincerely thanks the survivors for the ride as he explains to them that he has no need for them. At a graveyard, he gets encased in a net trap by Okashira who was trying to catch him when Gein was searching for his second doll. The raging puppeteer demands where the swordsman hid the doll.

Oka explains he knows how Gein's wires worked given that they were diamond-edged and how deadly they can be to flesh and bone. Gein then demands where Oka hid the corpse doll he was trying to find as he did not want it to rot away and become useless to him. Oka refuses and asks him where Kaoru was. Gein attempts to kill him only to find himself trapped again. Furious at the trick, Gein tries to strike Oka down.

However, Gein offers for him to be a warrior working for him, but Oka refuses. This results in Gein resuming trying to kill him where their scuffle results in his mask breaking off to show he was older than his opponent all this time. After a big amount into the scuffle, Gein demands where his doll is in exchange for the safety of Kaoru. However, Oka reveals his scorched the doll out of the disgust for what materials he used for it: dead human flesh. Gein attempts to ensnare him in a trap only for Oka to overcome it.

Gein cowardly attempts to convince him that he would give up creating dolls from flesh, but the enraged swordsman sees through him and burns him to death.
