J is the main antagonist of 2012 South Korean crime-thriller film Confession of Murder. He is a serial killer who terrorized the city of Seoul when he kidnapped and killed 11 women including the mother of Jung Hyun-sik and Kang Su-yun, who is the girlfriend of Choi Hyeong-gu, a police detective.

Biography[]

J's serial murders causes Hyung-gu to chase him. J, being aware of that, bursts into a bar where Choi often goes to vent his frustration at his failure to capture the killer. They fight for a few minutes. Choi manages to get his pistol, but realizes that Jo is holding a young woman hostage. Choi holds him at gunpoint and tells him to let her go. In response, Jo turns off the light and slits the woman's throat. He pushes her towards Choi and runs out of the restaurant.

J hides under a car for a moment, then runs off into the rain. Choi sets off in pursuit. He chases him from building to building until J is trapped on a roof. Choi holds him at gunpoint and orders him to kneel down with his hands up. The criminal obeys at first, but when Choi handcuffs him, J flees again and jumps onto the neon sign hanging on the building opposite. The sign proves to be very unstable and moves when J holds on to it. He then tries to hold on to the edge of the building. Choi, aiming at him, shoots him, forcing him to fall onto a car. The sign comes loose and nearly crushes the killer. However, the killer manages to escape from Choi again. The inspector resumes his search and is ambushed by J who stabs him non-fatally and warns him he will kill his mother if he continues to chase him. Then he scars his face and leaves, but not before announcing he has big projects for him.

To draw J out of hiding, Hyung-goo wrote the book Confession of Murder which is a bestseller and gives to Hyun-sik a false name as Doo-suk. Hyun-sik agreed. The plan works and Hyun-sik's popularity left J got angry and told the camera crew that he is real killer by making an anomymous call. Choi locates the location and it turns out to be his mother's neighbor's house. The detective rushes to her house to save her. All he finds is a knife stuck through a photo with a message to the endo saying he warned he will harm his mother if he continues to bother him.

Fortunately, his mom appears unharmed but is worried about Choi. The mother and son share a hug, however at this moment, Choi sees Jo making threatening signs from the windows in the next house. Hyung-gu rushes to the house to catch him, only to find a knife and a videotape on a wood chair.

The videotape is a record of Jung Su-yun, Hyung-gu’s wife, who was kidnapped by the killer a long time ago. Hyung-gu listens the recording for a moment, then decides to call in the press to give them a big scoop. Jo calls Hyung-gu, taunts him about his mother, and asks him to help reveal he is the true murderer to the public.

At the television debate, J revealed his face and show video of Soo-yeon's death. Her body was found in forest. Hyung-gu and Hyun-sik revealed their plan to lured J to face the crimes for what did. Hyung-goo knew that J would love to make himself a famous killer. J brushes it off and claims this trickery useless since the statute limitations is over. However, Hyung-gu plays him the recording he found at his mother's neighbor's house. The recording contains voices counting down the votes in the presidential elections. Those elections were on December 19, 1992 at midnight, and today they are on December 18 at 11:46pm. Choi draws his pistol to put him under arrest. J then pretends to be remorseful and pleads for his life. However, said remorse turns out to be a complete lie, J mimicking Su-Yun to taunt Hyung-gu further. An enraged Hyung-gu hits J. This prompts the killer to reveal Su-yun thought she would be spared because she was pregnant with her and J's child (whether he raped her or not is not really clear), but J hates children more than anything, so he killed her without hesitation. Resigned to her death, Hyung-gu tries to kill him, but the security staff prevents him to do so.

A blackout happens, J escapes and holds Su-yun's mother in hostage and takes the elevator with the woman to get away. Hyun-sik is wainting for him there and attacks him. Jo taunts him about his mother, which enrages Hyun-sik. The two fight a moment in the elevator, but J takes a piece of glass and stabs Hyun-sik in the leg, incapacitating him.

He gets out of the elevator. Trying to escape the TV station, he is cornered by Hyung-gu’s cops and a member of a vigilante group who seeks revenge against J’s victims, who tries to stab him. He throws a cafeteria dish at the vigilante, does the same with a trash can at the police and escapes the station by jumping out of a window.

J steals a car but is immediately grabbed by a forklift truck, which tipped it onto its side. The driver, as part of the vigilante group, tries to spear Jo with the forks, but he dodges these. The forklift truck grabs the car again and attempts to put it into another truck, but the drives gets distracted by a motorcyclist who falls on the road when he tries to avoid the forklift. J seizes the opportunity to escape from the car and manages to avoid getting crashed by it when the driver lets it fall.

J steals the motorcycle and flees on the highway, chased by Hyung-gu in a truck. After hitting the back of the motorcycle several times, Hyung-gu manages to knock it over, but J hangs on to the truck. He climbs up to the cab and ejects Hyung-gu from it. Hyung-gu holds on to the truck, however, and Jo slaloms to knock him off. Hyun-sik arrives in the opposite direction and blocks his path. J runs into his car, injuring the young man. Hyung-gu shoots out the truck's front tire at the same time as J slaloms, causing the vehicle to fall.

On the highway, J severely Hyung-gu and taunts him over the fact he only has three minutes left before the statute limitations expires. This prompts Hyung-gu to overpower him and wrapping a wire around his neck to strangle him. Fortunately for J, the police comes and takes him into custody. Su-yun’s mother, who is also on the scene, tries to avenger her daughter by stabbing him with a dagger poisoned with snake venom. Hyung-gu stops her, fom doing so. J initially puts his smug smile, only to realize Hyung-gu really stabbed him the poisoned blade. Surprised, he collapses and dies.
