Jack Smith is a major antagonist in the 2005 cartoon American Dad!. He is the biological father of series protagonist Stan, as well as the father-in-law of Francine and paternal grandfather of Hayley and Steve. and first appears as the main antagonist in the season 1 episode "Con-Heir". He also reappears in the season 4 episode "Jack's Back". He becomes an supporting character in the episode "Minstrel Krampus". His design and character are a parody of Marvel comic's Nick Fury and Escape from New York's Snake Plissken.
He was voiced by Daran Norris.
Appearance[]
Prior to “Minstrel Krampus”, Jack's design is simply that of an older Stan. His character design is a parody of Nick Fury. He wears an eye patch where he keeps a herb drill.
Personality[]
As a father he never really cared about his family. He cared more about his riches and power instead. He would often steal things from family members and frame them for crimes that he committed. He also ignored Stan as a child in which, as a result Stan never learned how to do things like ride a bike. He lies to his relatives to just make himself sound like a better person. He however, does have a softer side as he seems to be concerned when Steve sees him as a better role model than Stan, and even feels that he could of been a better father to Stan as well.
Biography[]
Around the time of Stan and Francine's marriage he left Stan to go on a "mission". Stan decided to have someone pose as his father to trick his family for the next 20 years. However when the poser dies, Jack arrives at the funeral to reveal he was Stan's true father. He claims to be a member of an organization called the Scarlet Alliance, but is really a jewel thief that the police have been tracking down for years. At first the Smiths don't believe him, but when the police arrive at their house, and a mustache is found in his suitcase Francine grows suspicious. He eventually gets Stan to quit work at the CIA, and has him go on a mission with him to raid a museum, but the mission is really a robbery. During the robbery, Stan refuses to steal with him, and Jack decides to turn himself in. Later in the series Jack returns when Stan is upset that he never really had a father and Steve releases him from prison. At first he seems reformed, and is even willing to make up for lost times with Stan, and be a role model to Steve. But it turns out that Jack is due for a trial, and is using Steve for a character reference. Stan and Steve then run away but, Jack decides to go to trial anyway. Stan tries to help him at trial but, is too late and Jack is sent back to prison.
Later when Steve misbehaves in "Minstrel Krampus", his grandfather Jack tells the story of how, as a boy growing up in Lower Berchtesgaden in Southern Bavaria, he captured the legendary Krampus, Santa Claus' sidekick that punishes naughty children. Tired of Steve's brattiness, Stan allows the Krampus to go free but he kidnaps Steve and demands Jack be brought to him. But when Stan uses his CIA connections to free Jack, he instead flees, leaving Stan and Roger to try to make a deal with Santa who still bears a grudge after the events in "For Whom the Sleigh Bell Tolls" but is willing to go along in order to kill the Krampus.
Meanwhile, Steve discover that the Krampus only punishes children because he loves them and tries to set them straight and bonds with him, just as Stan and Santa arrive and Santa kills the Krampus before turning the gun on Stan. Jack, who has had a change of heart, takes the bullet meant for Stan. As Santa flees, Jack's and the Krampus' blood intermingle, transforming Jack into the new Krampus.
In "Ghost Dad" Jack (who somehow returned to his normal self) was seen in a car chase after stealing O.J. Simpson's White Ford Bronco, where after he crashed in the highway was then shot by a group of police officers and left for dead. During the first week of his death, Stan began to forming a teen band, as a way to cope with him not forgiving Jack for being a terrible dad. Later Roger (as his Persona of Chantilly DuBois) plans to hold a seance to summon Jack's spirit so Stan can forgive him (But in truth it was suppose to be a fake Seance to fool Stan) and Somehow Roger accidentally summoned Jack back to the real world. After Jack insulted Stan, Francine tries to shoo Jack out of the house but it was later revealed that the seance Roger preformed now bound Jack in the Smith House.
After a while, the family found Jack annoying and tries to figure out a way to get him out house. After looking through Hayley's collection of Wiccan Books, Jack sees the family and agreed to found a way to leave the living. He revealed that during his travel he of a ritual that will allow him to leave, which involed the family. After reciting some chant, Jack had the family say "Open The Gate', resulting in Jack dissappearing (Only for Stan to tell Jack he forgives him) and the family happy that he was gone, Unbeknowist to them, it seems that Chant didn't make Jack dissappear but rather had him takeover Steve's Body.
The next day, Jack (while trying to past off as Steve) tries to pull off being his grandson however this get Stan suspsuious as when he went to pick up Steve, Steve took the wheel. Stan then asked Steve a couple of questions, one include his favorite Goblin character in his Dragon Games, which Jack answered wrong, resulting in Stan to learn that truth about Jack in Steve's Body. However, Jack then kicked Stan out of the car as he begin a new heist.
Later, Jack arrived on the roof of the sports memorabilia museum, where he used Steve's weak body to navagate through the sercuity lasers (Which Jack had a Problem before due to his former body) as he revealed that he plans to steal Arnold Palmer's first tea and lemonade mix drink creation. However before he could steal it, Stan and Roger arrived and Jack warns Stan about the Lasers but Stan didn't care as he realize that by prasing Steve, He could push Jack out of his body, which he did and without a body, Jack is unable to get the Arnold Palmer Drink creation he was trying to steal. After Steve walk through the lasers and activated the sercuity system, He, Stan and Roger escape the museum before the police come to arrest them, unfortunately for Jack, because he used Steve as a way to leave the house and was extracted out in the museum, Jack is now bound to the museum for the rest of his afterlife.
Trivia[]
- It was shown in a flashback of Stan's from "My Purity Ball and Chain", Jack gave him the sex talk, which was more of a "watch". He had sex with a hooker as Stan watches, which traumatized his son for years.
- In "Klaustastrophe.tv", It was revealed that Jack never told Stan where they live or their address as he anticipated that if Stan were to be kidnapped and tortured by someone who is looking for him, he would tell where Jack was.
