Villain Overview

Obi-Wan: Hello there.

Grievous: General Kenobi! You are a bold one!

~ Grievous's most famous quote, turned into a meme by fans
Jedi scum!
~ One of General Grievous' most famous quotes in Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
Army or not, you must realise… you are doomed!
~ Grievous' last words.
I'm no errand boy. And I'm not in this war for Dooku's politics. I am the leader of the most powerful droid army the galaxy has ever seen.
~ General Grievous while duelling Obi-Wan Kenobi during the space Battle of Saleucami.

General Grievous, born as Qymaen jai Sheelal, is a major antagonist in the Star Wars franchise.

He is the ruthless and undemonstrative supreme cyborg commander of the CIS Droid Army, often losing his temper and becoming argumentative and impatient with battle droids that serve him when they do not fulfill his desires. It is not uncommon for him to destroy one of his Droids when agitated. Although General Grievous is strong, he underestimates the power of the Republic and the Jedi which leads to his loss in some of the battles. He is the arch-nemesis of Obi-Wan Kenobi throughout the Clone Wars.

He was voiced by Matthew Wood (who also voiced Bib Fortuna in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace and The Mandalorian) throughout most of his appearances in Star Wars related media and John DiMaggio (who also voiced Bender Bending Rodríguez, Joey Mousepad, and Igner in Futurama, Dr. Drakken in Kim Possible, Nitro Zeus in Transformers: The Last Knight, Arthur in Ralph Breaks the Internet, Nitro Zeus in Transformers: The Last Knight, and the Joker in Batman: Under the Red Hood) in Season 2 of Star Wars: Clone Wars and Richard McGongale (who also voiced Carmine Falcone in Batman: The Telltale Series, Lava Monster in Samurai Jack, and Bill the Wrangler in Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron) in Season 3 of Star Wars: Clone Wars.

Personality[]

General Grievous is a ruthless, misanthropic, and treacherous individual who shows no mercy to any enemy, even when he was a Kaleesh. His name says it all and there is nothing positive about him. His shuttle crash left him with a sense of bitterness for being cheated on a warrior's death and though he chose to become a cyborg, believing that flesh was weak, Grievous is secretly ashamed of his new form. He also began comparing himself to the Jedi and became determined to be able to match them, leading to him doing anything in his power to improve himself.

Grievous is also known and feared for his cruelty, sadism and brutality. He relishes in the suffering of others, almost always seen and heard laughing during battle, be it in a naval engagement or close combat against Jedi and clones, or even a massacre. The novelization of Revenge of the Sith states that Grievous is directly responsible for the deaths of billions. Grievous has no problem with sacrificing others for himself and often exploits the Jedi's compassion for their soldiers, such as attacking medical stations. He is even treacherous to his own allies, such as stabbing a junker in the back when he wanted to raise the price of R2-D2's memory banks. At the height of the Clone Wars, he was considered an even greater threat than CIS leader Count Dooku. He is often regarded as the greatest war criminal in Star Wars history, even rivaling and possibly surpassing the likes of Grand Moff Tarkin. Grievous tends invade Republic worlds and conquer it in the name of the Separatists, which results in him killing off their leaders.

He is also shown to be very arrogant and manipulative, but also has a somewhat cowardly and pusillanimous side; he tends to flee when the tide is against him. Despite this, he is also quite indefatigable and relentless; he is totally determined to destroy the Jedi, and will sometimes fight them even when he is in a bad condition. This is shown when he fought Obi-Wan despite the fact that he was still weak from a crippling blow inflicted by Mace Windu, showing a mild form of recklessness. This is in total disregard to Count Dooku's instructions, who encouraged Grievous to avoid attacking Jedi head on due to his lack of Force sensitivity putting him at a severe disadvantage, and instead use fear, surprise and intimidation. When he followed the Count's advice, however, Grievous was a terrifying and unstoppable force, being able to take on entire groups of Jedi with ease.

However, despite his villainy, Grievous also has minor redeeming qualities (at least in the Legends continuity), caring for his people and Kummar. He appeared to care for his pet Gor as when he realized that Kit Fisto and Nahdar Vebb killed him he was enraged and smashed his control room with his fists. Grievous hated Nute Gunray for thinking of him as nothing but a servant droid, which enraged him to no end and saw the viceroy and the other Separatist leaders as greedy weaklings. His hatred for the Viceroy was so strong that he asked for Darth Sidious' permission to kill him one day.

Grievous also had something of a rivalry with Asajj Ventress, but the two shared one trait; a dislike and contempt for the mindless battle droids of the Separatists, which he often destroyed to alleviate his frustration. Despite his arrogance, Grievous is extremely loyal for Darth Sidious but never for Count Dooku or the Separatist Council who sees them nothing but unworthy pawns. This is due to him, and Sidious have one thing in common: they don't care about anyone in the galaxy but themselves while viewing everyone (Battle Droids and Sith Apprentices) as their slaves by watching them suffer for their failure, as in Grievous is not in this war for Dooku's politics but rather Sidious' endgame of the Republic and the extinction of the Jedi, this possibly implies Grievous view Sidious as his true master.

Powers and Abilities[]

Grievous is an extremely destructive, powerful, and deadly fighter, being one of the most proficient Jedi hunters to exist. His number of Jedi victims is surpassed only by Darth Vader,

  • Cyborg Physiology: Despite, or possibly because of having an effectively fully mechanical body, Grievous is incredibly agile and the enhancements give him many advantages over a purely flesh and blood opponent. Grievous can split his arms in two, giving him four arms to fight with and can spin his torso, arms, and wrists in deadly, blindingly fast storms of death. Grievous can even use his feet just as well as his hands and his ability to wield his lightsabers in this unorthodox and fast flowing style makes him able to hold his own against several opponents at once. These arms grant him immense strength as well, being able to toss around clones and Jedi with ease and even lift a droideka. Grievous' mechanical body also allows him to survive the vacuum of space. He can also control his droids through the antennae in his head, making him even more in control during battles. His armor is said to be strong enough to survive a star fighter's cannon.
  • Lightsaber Skills: He is extremely proficient, efficacious, and authoritative at wielding lightsabers, using his own unique form, which utilises extremely fast barrages of strikes and more powerful blows to overwhelm his enemies. Grievous is also perfectly willing to use more dishonest, manipulative, and underhanded tactics, for example, pulling a blaster to finish his opponents. Grievous ultimately became one of the greatest Jedi killers of all time, second only to Darth Vader. However, in his final duel against Obi-Wan Kenobi, Grievous uses all four of his arms and lightsabers, but each lightsaber is quickly disarmed by his opponent. This fact can be interpreted that Grievous has been weakened after Mace Windu uses Force Crush on him after attempting to kidnap chancellor Palpatine, which damaged his organs resulting in his constant coughing and declining in strength. Grievous is one of the few non Force-sensitives that are capable of wielding a lightsaber and dueling a Jedi (the others are Pre Vizsla and Sergeant Kreel).
  • Master Strategist: He is a skilled general and tactician, both in naval warfare, on the ground, and close quarters combat. His modus operandi usually involves tricking his opponents by using chaotic strategies that appear random, but are in fact highly deliberate and calculated as a means to obscure his true objective. Grievous is quick to target civilians in battle, forcing his enemy to make the choice between victory and protecting innocents. His invasion of the Core Worlds in Operation: Durge's Lance was a major victory for the Separatists and a crippling blow to the Republic, leaving many people to believe the Separatists might actually win the war.
  • Skilled Pilot: He is also a skilled and influential pilot, said to be as good at handling a ship as he is with a lightsaber.

Quotes[]

Jedi! You are surrounded, your armies are decimated! Make peace with the Force now, for this is your final hour. But know that I, General Grievous, am not completely without mercy. I will grant you a warrior's death. Prepare!
~ Grievous' first-ever spoken line.
So much for the Jedi escort!
~ Grievous having to attack the republic ships and medical transports near the Ryndellia system.
Hello there!
~ Grievous's first encounter with Obi-Wan Kenobi on board the Malevolence.
Grievous: General Kenobi, did you really think I would leave the hyperdrive unguarded?
Obi-Wan: Anything is possible. You haven't exactly impressed me, today.
Grievous: [laughs] Kill him!
~ Grievous to Kenobi before his droids try to attack him on the Malevolence.
Grievous: They sent a child to destroy my station? The Republic must be running out of Jedi.
Ahsoka: You must be General Grievous.
[Grievous laughs].
Ahsoka: He's just another tinny, boys. Let's scrap him like the rest!
~ Grievous' very first encounter with Ahsoka Tano.
Ahsoka: Sorry to interrupt your playtime, grumpy, but wouldn't you prefer a challenge?
Grievous: THAT wouldn't be you!
~ Grievous agreeing to challenge Ahsoka, after she saved Rex from him.
So, Skywalker has come for his R2 unit. [laughs] Go and make sure that they do not escape.
~ Grievous's command to R3-S6.
Improvements! I submit to no one! I chose them!
~ Grievous about his changes.
EV-A4-D: In your condition, you need your rest.
Grievous: I will rest when the Jedi are dead.
~ Grievous preparing to fight Nahdar Vebb and Kit Fisto.
I will kill you all! Do YOU hear me Jedi?! DO YOU HEAR ME?!
~ Grievous to Kit Fisto after he kills Nahdar Vebb.
Grievous: Eeth Koth, isn't it? I've been looking forward to meeting you.
Eeth Koth: Your reputation precedes you, General: the reputation of a coward and a murderer.
Grievous: Murderer? Is it murder to rid the galaxy of you Jedi filth?
~ Grievous upon meeting Eeth Koth.
Greetings, Jedi. It would seem, once again, one of your order has lost his way, and even better, a leading member of your Jedi council. Listen to me, Jedi, I do not care about your politics, I do not care about your Republic. I only live, to see you DIE! But death will not come so easily for Master Koth. I will make him suffer endlessly, because I know that is more painful for you all!
~ Grievous’ message to the Jedi after capturing Eeth Koth
Ventress: I have the exact locations of both the clone DNA room and the clone trooper barracks.
Grievous: Both shall be annihilated under my hand.
Ventress: Our hand, General. Count Dooku assigned us both this task.
Grievous: But of course, assassin. I look forward to meeting you.
~ Grievous and Ventress before attacking Kamino.
Grievous: You summoned me my Lord?
Dooku: The time has come at last to take revenge on Asajj Ventress and the witch Mother Talzin. I have learned Ventress has returned to Dathomir. Go there, and wipe the witches out. All of them. Their illusions do not frighten me.
Grievous: Yes, master.
~ Grievous and Dooku.
Assemble the fleet! The time to exact vengeance against the traitor Ventress has arrived! We go to Dathomir, to battle!
~ Grievous and his army goes to Dathomir.
Ventress: Surprised?
Grievous: Hardly. You're the one I was sent here for.
Ventress: Then fight me alone. Prove you're the greater warrior. If I win, your army leaves. If you win, the Nightsisters will surrender to you.
Grievous: I have always been greater than you.
~ Grievous and Ventress before fighting.
Grievous: Hondo.
Hondo: General Grievous, I presume? What a surprise. Have a seat. What, may I ask, is the honor?
Grievous: You can dispense with the pleasantries, pirate. This planet is now under Separatist control.
~ Grievous upon meeting Hondo Ohnaka.
So many lightsabers to add to my collection!
~ Grievous threatening to kill Ahsoka and the Jedi younglings for their lightsabers.
You will never defeat Grievous! NEVER!
~ Grievous after Ahsoka and the younglings escape him with help from Hondo.
Grievous: What's the situation, Captain?
Dofine: Two Jedi have entered the main hangar bay. We're tracking them.
Grievous: Just as Count Dooku predicted.
~ Grievous to Lushros Dofine on the Invisible Hand.
Grievous: Ah, yes, the Negotiator: General Kenobi. We've been waiting for you.
Battle Droid: Excuse me.
Grievous: That wasn't much of a rescue.
Battle Droid: You're welcome.
Grievous: And, Anakin Skywalker, I was expecting someone with your reputation to be a little… older.
Anakin: General Grievous, you're shorter than I expected.
Grievous: Jedi scum!
~ Grievous and Anakin Skywalker meeting for the very first time.
Obi-Wan: We have a job to do, Anakin, try not to upset him.
Grievous: Your lightsabers will make a fine addition to my collection.
Obi-Wan: Not this time. And this time, you won't escape.
Anakin: Artoo!
Grievous: CRUSH THEM! Make them SUFFER!
~ General Grievous
Don't bother with them! Keep the ship in orbit!
~ General Grievous.
You lose, General Kenobi.
~ General Grievous after being surrounded by both Kenobi and Skywalker on the Invisible Hand.
Time to abandon ship.
~ Grievous preparing to launch all the escape pods along with himself.
Grievous: It won't be long before the armies of the Republic track us here. I am sending you to the Mustafar system in the Outer Rim. It is a volcanic planet, you will be safe there.
Gunray: SAFE?! Hmph! Chancellor Palpatine managed to escape your grip, General. Without Count Dooku, I have doubts about your ability to keep us safe.
Grievous: Be thankful, Viceroy! You have not found yourself in my grip. Your ship is waiting.
~ General Grievous to Nute Gunray.
General Kenobi! You are a bold one! Kill him!
~ General Grievous to General Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Grievous: BACK AWAY! I will deal with this Jedi slime myself.
Obi-Wan: Your move?
Grievous: You fool! I've been trained in your Jedi Arts by Count Dooku. Attack, Kenobi!
~ General Grievous fighting General Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Trivia[]

  • Like Darth Maul and Count Dooku, Grievous is one of the Prequel Trilogy villains based on Darth Vader, who each foreshadow a different aspect of what Anakin would become. In Grievous' case, it was by being a Jedi-hunting cyborg who suffers from wheezing and heavy breathing.
  • Grievous final words may be "what? Huh?" but his actual final words (heard in the audio sample above) are untranslated Kaleesh.
  • The encounter between Grievous and Obi-Wan onboard the Malevolence, where the former greets the latter with a "Hello there!" before ordering his battle droids surrounding his adversary to "Kill him!", is a direct callback to the scene on Utapau from Revenge of the Sith where Obi-Wan would say the same line to Grievous, before Grievous ordered the surrounding droids to kill Obi-Wan.
    • The scene from Revenge of the Sith has become one of the most popular and memorable moments in the Star Wars franchise due to Obi-Wan's "hello there", which would become a meme and was usually followed by Grievous's response: "General Kenobi! You are a bold one!"
  • Grievous never fought Anakin in a lightsaber duel. The closest they got to a fight is when Grievous used a MagnaGuard electro staff to break the glass of the Separatist ship in order to kill both Anakin and Obi-Wan.
    • Comedically enough, because Anakin had never met Grievous before Revenge of the Sith, wherein Anakin claimed Grievous was "shorter than he expected", the writers of The Clone Wars had to go to absurd degrees to ensure that Anakin was never in the same room as Grievous.
    • The closest Grievous and Anakin had to meeting each other was in a Clone Wars episode "Shadow Warrior", in which a defeated Grievous was a bargaining chip for Count Dooku to release Anakin during a prisoner exchange. During this encounter, Anakin is unconscious and slumped over, preventing either of them from getting a good look at each other.
    • During the unfinished albeit canon Utapau Crystal Crisis arc of The Clone Wars, Grievous and Anakin nearly encountered each other in the last two episodes, "Crystal Crisis" and "The Big Bang".
  • In Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Grievous has six fingers on each hand, but in the first Clone Wars animated series, he has five fingers on each hand, and in the second Clone Wars series, Grievous has only four on each hand.
    • Star Wars: The Clone Wars would later use a more film accurate design, complete with the six-fingered hands, in both the unfinished Utapau arc and a brief cameo in the intro of the episode Old Friends Not forgotten.
  • Though most likely a coincidence, the enemy called Grievous Bodily Arm from the Dragon Quest series shares more similarities with General Grievous than just their names.
  • Grievous' death is the final cryptic display of how powerful a Jedi Obi-Wan became, displaying how powerful he will be against Anakin when their final duel on Mustafar breaks out.
  • In the Legends storyline, Grievous was a Kaleesh warrior known as Qymaen jal Sheelal, who fought in a war against the Yam'rii. He met and grew a strong relationship with a female named Ronderu Iij Kummar. When she died, Qymaen took on the name Grievous, growing a strong hatred for the Yam'rii. He was eventually reconstructed into a cyborg by the Confederacy of Independent Systems after a near-death experience when his ship was secretly blown up by Count Dooku.
  • The sound effects of Grievous' cough came from George Lucas when he had bronchitis during the filming of Attack of the Clones.
  • Grievous hates being called a droid.
  • Grievous is 7 feet tall and 345 lbs.
  • Grievous appears in the prequel game of the Angry Birds Star Wars franchise, where he is renamed "General Grunters" to fit his actor, Corporal Pig. Grievous spins his lightsabers around him to attack and made his first appearance in the Pork Side of the fifth stage, Revenge of The Pork. This is rather strange since he never fled to Mustafar, which the Pork Side version of the stage centers around. Grievous only appears in the first three stages, and he does not appear since not even in the boss stage. This was likely done to represent how he eventually died around the middle parts of Revenge of the Sith.
  • Despite being one of the main villains of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Grievous did not appear during its final two seasons apart from his short cameo in the episode Old Friends Not forgotten despite being mentioned multiple times.
    • Also, his death in Revenge of the Sith occurred during the penultimate episode of the show, Shattered.
  • In his first appearance in the first Star Wars: Clone Wars miniseries, he was significantly more powerful than in his later appearances, being able to defeat several Jedi at once with relative ease. On Hypori he easily bested a group of seven Jedi, including two members of the Jedi High Council.
    • This loss of power is easily explained in-universe due to the fact that Mace Windu crushed his chest near the end of this miniseries, which most likely weakened him significantly.
    • The out-of-universe explanation was that the development team for Star Wars: Clone Wars was only given the base script for the character, which they built on independently from the films' team.
    • This has led to much criticism of his portrayal in Revenge of the Sith and 2008 Clone Wars series, as he is much less powerful or intimidating, and much more prone to running away. He also kills only one Jedi onscreen in the entire show, while in the 2D micro series he killed several in many battles.
    • His combat skills in the 2008 Clone Wars have shown to be rather inconsistent. For instance he is able to contend with Jedi Council members such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Kit Fisto and Adi Gallia, but also struggled with Ahsoka Tano, a Padawan. His most infamous and humiliating moment came when he was overpowered by Gungans.
    • Because of this, many fans consider the miniseries version to be the best and 'definitive' version.
