Johnny Bartlett? I thought guys like you fried in Hell.
~ Frank Bannister to Johnny Bartlett.
I got out Frank. I've been carrying on the good work. Got me a score of 40.
~ Johnny Bartlett to Frank Bannister.

John Charles "Johnny" Bartlett is one of the two main antagonists in the 1996 horror film The Frighteners. He is a prolific and vicious mass murderer who continues his work in the afterlife, focusing on increasing his body count as a form of competition with other famous murderers. He comes back from Hell, able to attack the living and the dead, as the ghost with powers to transform into a Grim Reaper,

He was portrayed by Jake Busey.

Biography[]

In 1963, he worked as an orderly at a hospital but he soon went mad after being obsessing with serial killers and their victims. Brandishing a shotgun, he began killing patients and hospital workers, especially in the hospital's chapel with the assistance of his girlfriend, Patricia Bradley. The pair killed and marked numbers on their victim's heads (twelve in all), while ignoring the threat of the incoming police. Afterwards, the two made love in the morgue to celebrate their carnage. They were soon caught, with Johnny proclaiming that he is proud to have killed one more than another serial killer, Charles Starkweather. Due to her being a minor, Patricia goes to prison, while Johnny receives the electric chair and is executed for his crimes.

As remarked by himself, Johnny's soul was sent to Hell, while there he got acquainted with the souls of several other serial killers. 27 years later in 1990, Patricia is finally released but still in love with Johnny, she uses Ouija boards to contact and resurrect Johnny as a spirit from Hell. They continue killing again by squeezing both organs, hearts (Heart Attacks) and Brains (Strokes) to his victims, starting with Frank's wife, though Frank was spared for unknown reasons. As a ghost, Johnny uses his ghost power to disguise himself as the Grim Reaper. During this time, Johnny racks up 24 more murders. Local psychic, Frank Bannister, begins predicting the people who are going to die, and becomes a suspect in the eyes of FBI agent Milton Dammers.

Frank realizes the truth and after briefly becoming a ghost, he nearly destroys Johnny but he is revived before landing the final blow. Johnny returns to his girlfriend. She viciously kills her mother and is about to kill Lucy who was trying to help her. However, Frank comes to the rescue, and they hide and run in the now vacant hospital where it was abandoned after the murders years ago. Patricia chases them with a shot gun, killing FBI Agent Dammers along the way. After falling through the floor, Frank recalls his wife's murder and realizes that Johnny and Patricia were responsible. Gloating, Johnny then tells him that he can join his wife. Patricia succeeds in killing Frank by choking him to death with her gun and they planned to mutilate Lucy. Unfortunately, Frank's ghost then seizes Patricia's soul from her body and takes her with him through the ethereal portal known as the Corridor of Life. Patricia pleads to Johnny, who demands Frank release her.

Johnny chases after him to rescue his girlfriend and manages to get her back. Frank enters Heaven, as Johnny taunts him over how they will go back to Earth and kill more. Frank's ghost friends arrive to tell Frank to step back, and they watch as the portal became the bloody and horrific stomach of a giant worm-like creature, that takes both the screaming Johnny and Patricia's souls to Hell. It is possible Satan will make sure Johnny nor Patricia will escape hell ever again.

Personality[]

Johnny is a vicious psychopathic serial killer who takes sick pleasure in killing, which he views as nothing more than a game with his victims as points in his favor. He often compares his victim count to other notorious serial killers and wants to have more than anyone.

His one and only positive trait is his genuine love of his girlfriend/partner, Patricia. This was best seen when he made an attempt to save her from Frank, despite the fact that he ignored killing Lucy.

Trivia[]

  • He has a burn spot in the center of head, no doubt from the electric chair.
  • His final victim in life was Harry Sinclair while his last victim as a ghost was Frank.
  • His actor, Jake Busey is the son of another Hollywood actor Gary Busy.
