Villain Overview

If a man dedicates his life to good deeds and the welfare of others, he will die unthanked and unremembered. If he exercises his genius bringing misery and death to billions, his name will echo down through the millennia for a hundred lifetimes. Infamy is always more preferable to ignominy.
~ Fabius Bile.

Fabius Bile is a major antagonist in the Warhammer 40,000 franchise. He is a Chaos Space Marine apothecary and former Lieutenant-Commander of the Emperor's Children Traitor Legion who specializes in horrific genetic engineering and illegal cloning. His creations are often considered unacceptable horrors even by the abhorrent and deranged traitors who have seen the terrors of the immaterium.

Appearance[]

Fabius Bile has white hair that is tied in a long-scalp lock which make his gaunt features much more skeletal and scrawny, paired with his height giving him an intimidating look. His eyes are black, having changed to match those of his Daemon Primarch, Fulgrim. Bile wears a floor-length coat of flayed human skin, taken from the bodies of the dead space marines on Istvaan V. Here and there, it is possible to recognise the features of a face, a mouth stretched in an endless scream of agony or eyes wide with horror at the sight of the skinner's knife. Fabius also favours a belt of knotted sinew pierced through with metal loops, from which hang the tools of the Excruciator's art. These include hooks, blades, spikes, pliers and barbs glittering with the promise of excruciating and exquisite pain.

Personality[]

Fabius Bile's name is accursed and reviled in the entire galaxy to those who knew his name and his actions for good reasons. He has a philosophy that a person won't be recognized if they just do good-deeds to other's. His atrocities even gained a notoriety and hatred towards the most deranged people in the entire galaxy. However, he is somewhat fascinated with the mystery of life and is also undeniably quite intelligent as shown by his deep knowledge of cloning and genetic engineering being able to create superhuman beings that sometimes match and then even exceed the Emperor's original scientific achievement in creating the Primarchs and the transhuman Adeptus Astartes.

Bile has accrued a number of aliases both by his admirers and sworn enemies, including, but not limited to Manflayer, Clone Lord or simply spider (used as an insult he seems susceptible to).

However, Bile prefers to call himself "The Primogenitor" because as a former scientist for the Emperor's Children Traitor Legion, he believes that there is a boundless artistic talent that could match those of the Emperors. He also claims that he has unlocked the secrets Emperor's earlier experiments during the creation of the Primarchs and the first Space Marines. Many people believe that he is soiling Mankind's gene pool due to the fact that he left many twisted abominations on most planets that he has touched thanks to his twisted alchemical knowledge and skills at genetic manipulation. Some members of Chaos Cults regard him and worship as Pater Mutatis, father of all the mutants that skulk in the underbelly of the Imperium. And Bile himself doesn't dissuade from believing this statement.

Despite the fact that Bile is considered to be one of the most vile people in the entire universe, but he has also earned the respect of some people, and a lot of ambitious overlords let Bile experiment on their own armies. The traitor legionaries from the Eye of Terror also need his skills as he is the only person capable of producing untainted gene seed at any significant scale, and his cloned warriors and slaves can be used nicely on many battlefields. Without his skills, the Long War would have slowly come to a standstill or an end millennia ago, and the fires that Horus had lit would be extinguished for eternity. With so much influence at his command, Fabius Bile has cunningly negotiated bargains with the Daemon Primarchs even if they're rather fragile at best, selling his secrets and talents to them but refusing to directly help them or take their side. In this way, the Primogenitor was guaranteed the position at the heart of a web of influence that spans across the Eye of Terror and beyond. Since the birth of the Great Rift, Bile has used his leverage to a singular end - the capture of the Primaris Space Marines that have appeared across the galaxy. One of his largest goals is to harvest the genetic bounty of Primarch Roboute Guilliman himself.

Interestingly, despite spending most of his time in the eye of terror, and travelling on a ship heavily exposed to the influence of the immaterium he refuses the notion of Chaos Gods and daemons, vehemently claiming they are in no way truly sentient, merely existing as reflections of emotions of the living. This is oftentimes a source of conflict with daemons, and the followers of the chaos gods. Since the warp is influenced by the wills of those who have souls, this weakens daemons near Fabius, giving him and his cohort an extra edge in combat against them.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Superhuman Intellect: Being a genetically-engineered superhuman space marine and scientist, Fabius has superhuman intellect from the git-go, but his constant interest in learning anything he can has sharpened it even further. Fabius has also spent a significant amount of effort on improving all aspects of his body, including this intellect, even going as far as introducing Eldar wraithbone into the brain of most of his cloned bodies, using it to seamlessly transfer his consciousness if he is killed or dies of his affliction.
  • Charisma and Manipulation: Of course, thanks to his exceptional superhuman intellect, Bile earned the interests of the Daemon Primarch Fulgrim and other ambitious Overlords to the point he made some fragile bargains with them even if it usually ends up with him either betraying or flat-out refusing to pledge his alliance with them. The only real reason he's joining their side is for the sake to slake his scientific curiosity and to further his personal goals.
  • Enhanced Warriors and Clones: Because of his extreme talent with genetics and cloning, Fabius Bile has a lot of enhanced warriors at his disposal. Many of them were former space marines, further enhanced by Bile's own drugs, however most of them are mutants of his own creation, especially the vatborn who have developed a religion surrounding their Pater Mutatis and hold competitions amongst themselves for the right to serve him or the apothecaries who work with Bile. He also used to have numerous of his gland hounds always at hand, members of the new human race he is trying to perfect, trained for battle, especially hunting space marines. Unfortunately these are no longer at his disposal as they were evacuated en mass to a secret location in the Eldar webway. This evacuation was Biles last resort of protecting them from his enemies. Fabius also has countless unique mutants, results of small scale experiments to explore specific biological ideas. Sometimes the mutations are stable enough to be used on the battlefield, enhancing their strength, speed and durability beyond the levels of a space marine. However sometimes the mutations fail, turning his warriors into uncontrollable monsters and mutants who pledge their lives to end their own suffering.
  • The Blight: Due to his original genetic flaw, Bile's body quickly deteriorates and dies. He has managed to sustain his life over the centuries by creating clones of himself and transferring his own brain into them. If he can successfully keep doing this without hindrance he can be considered "immortal". Later he has further improved this by incorporating Eldar technology, allowing him to transfer his consciousness to any of the countless hidden clone bodies, even if his original brain is destroyed.

Fabius also has a lot of tools at his disposal so that he can better perform his degenerate experiments or fight on the battlefield, such as:

  • Chaos Artificer Power Armour: Fabius Bile's master-crafted power armour consists of numerous mechanisms of his own inventions intended to fill his veins and mind with very vigorous drugs and a stimukants which make him much more capable in combat and also help dull his chronic pains due to the blight that affects him. Since the power armor is made from superior materials in comparison to standard-issue power armour it grant's immense protection to the user, comparable to terminator armour.
  • The Chirurgeon: Possessing a dark sentience of its own, this complex part-sorcerous/part-technological device is attached to Bile's spine and extends its spidery limbs over his shoulders. It distributes and balances countless stimukants around his body, in order for him to always be in best condition for any given task. It often gives him many of the countless immunities enjoyed by daemonkind whilst boosting his physical abilities to further superhuman levels, exceeding that of even other space marines. On the battlefield, he might also bestow the questionable gift of his enhancements to others, with uncertain results. Sometimes the experiment is a success, creating psychotic killers superhuman even in comparison to their corrupted Chaos Space Marine brethren, but sometimes the subject's metabolism disintegrates in the face of the stress, resulting in instant death. The Chirurgeon is a construction of Fabius' own invention and he has perfected it over a long period of time to more intimately bond with his body, enabling it to even perform surgery on himself. Over the centuries following the great heresy, the Chirurgeon proceeds to evolve under the influence of the warp, starting out as a simple tool set and becoming it's own sentient entity. It seems to suffer from separation anxiety when disconnected from Bile for prolonged periods of time. Interestingly, the more it is influenced by the warp, the more of its parts seem to turn from metal to biological chitin like material, and at some point it has shown the ability to reproduce, something that Fabius has used to equip lesser clones of himself during his time indebted to the Chaos gods, which allowed him to sustain around twelve copies of himself simultaneously, actively producing monsters to pay off his debts.
  • Rod of Torment: This demon-forged rod was originally the Daemon Prince Sh'lacqclak, Marquis of Mutilation. Reforged to Bile's own purposes, the rod amplifies the slightest touch into a raging maelstrom of agony, able to incapaciate almost any enemy with unbearable pain. Though Fabius sees the device as somewhat blunt, it always raises a flicker to send a victim screaming for the release of death just by administering a deft rap on the knuckles, even aliens known for their extremely high pain tolerance such as the Orks are affected. Tornment is also sentient, possessing some fragment of the Marquis' original soul, and oftentimes demands Fabius by subtle ways to unleash it as it revels in bringing pain. Though Fabius has tried multiple times, he cannot recreate it's mechanisms which suggests that the daemon it was forged from plays a much bigger role than the physical technology of the device.
  • Xyclos Needler:  Bile also employs other obscure archeotech weaponry, such as the Xyclos Needler, a specially-crafted weapon created so that he could "test" new genetically-engineered serums in battlefield conditions. It fires a thin capillary tubes imbued with Bile's latest creations. Even the smallest scratch can induce terrifying psychotic premonitions of the tortures yet to come, cause any living being to mutate uncontrollably, or even to cause the victim to spontaneously combust in an instant. One of his concoctions even contains samples from captives with the null gene, making it devastating against the senseless biology of daemons and other warp creatures who are largely resistant to conventional poisons.
  • Bolt Pistol: A bolt pistol is a ballistic .70 calibre weapon which fires self-propelled explosive bolts which explodes with devastating effect once they have penetrated into a target, effectively blowing it apart from the inside. Fabius Bile uses this pistol very rarely as a back-up weapon, preferring the other tools mentioned above due to the explosive rounds' tendency to ruin potential samples.
  • The Key: Originally a relatively unremarkable Eldar warrior, the key has played an important role in the raid on the Craftworld Luganath. Bile has extracted the memories of the caotured warrior to map out the Craftworld and its defenses. This procedure has mostly lobotomised the woman, but instead of disposing of her, Bile has used the opportunity to experiment on the elusive Eldar. By allowing her body to overgrow with wraithbone, he has turned her into a sort of psykic resonator which he can use to open Webway portals, hence why he only refers to her as Key.

While Fabius has made more enemies than even his superhuman intellect could count, he also has a few allies to aid in his quests.

  • Other apothecaries: As the arguably greatest of all traitor apothecaries Fabius attracts a number of those who wish to learn from him or to have his help in their own experiments. Bile find the company of fellow medical scientists pleasant in many cases, and enjoys giving lectures and speeches on scientific matters. Some only stay with him shortly, to learn a specific skill or to solve a specific problem, others will remain with him for centuries, soaking up Biles intellect like a sponge and joining him on many missions. He calls this grouping the consortium, and actively promotes competition between it's members to better their skills. While most members of the consortium don't particularly like Fabius, and are only with him for practical reasons, some of them are close enough that they could be even called his friends. The most loyal of these is undoubtedly Aryan Zorzi, an apothecary of the World Eaters legion. Aryan is Fabius' most trusted ally, and defacto his second in command. He uses potent chemicals to control the butcher's nails implanted in his brain, and his main scientific focus is botany. Aryan has multiple gardens where he grows countless plants, some predatory and aggressive, some incredibly poisonous, and some producing potent drugs. Aryan is also incredibly skilled with his blades, capable of besting other Astartes with ease. He carries the skulls of his battle brothers that he has culled as they went insane from the nails hanging on his chest, and oftentimes has conversations with them. Another apothecary of specific personal importance would be Oleander Koh. Oleander is an apothecary of the Emperor's Children, same as Fabius himself, but unlike Fabius he has devoted himself to the Prince of Pleasures with the rest of the legion. There is a long history between them, and at some point Oleander leaves Bile's side and is considered a traitor by many members of the consortium, but upon his return Fabius welcomes without much threat or punishment. Oleander helps orchestrate the raid on Luganath, however he is left behind by Bile due to his meddling with the Eldar Harlequins who are constantly following Bile, trying to manipulate him into their own narrative. After this Oleander is gifted by the harlequins to a homonculus named Hexachires who will be Fabius' teacher on his first visit to the dark city of Commorragh. After Fabius betrays Hexachires Oleander manipulates the homonculus to give Bile more time to prepare.

Trivia[]

  • Fabius's first name is from a latin word which is a Roman Family name for the Patrician Descendant.
  • Fabius last name came from the latin word, Billis same as his first name. And the name Bile is also the word for a bitter brownish-yellow or greenish-yellow secretion produced by the liver and stored in a gall bladder. But Bile's name could also be meant into either no-sense of humor, annoyed or short tempered. It
  • rhymes with the word "Vile" which again makes sensethe in con of his ruthless experimentslaxy.
  • Fabius' inspiration came from a real-life Nazi scientist Dr. Josef Mengele who killed the Jews in gas chambers and performed incredibly cruel experiments on the captives in concentration camps. He was also influenced by fictional mad scientists such as Dr. Victor Frankenstein.
