Dune is the overarching antagonist of the anime series Heartcatch Pretty Cure!. He is the leader of Desert Apostles, having fought against several generations of Pretty Cure before facing Cure Flower 50 years prior. He is first shown as a shadow on a video screen, talking to Sabaku about the new fairy that has been born. He is shown in flashbacks and in several later episodes, but his true form and appearance are only revealed in Episode 45.
He was voiced by Hikaru Midorikawa (who has also voiced Thor in Record of Ragnarok) in Japanese.
Appearance[]
Dune initially appears as a young child with green hair and blue eyes that can change into brown. He wears a long white rimmed collar garment with black clothes inside. During his first fight with the Cures, he grows into an adult form of himself, and during the final battle, he grows into gigantic size with a more muscular build and his hair becoming much longer.
Personality[]
Despite his cute appearance, Dune is a manipulative entity who seeks thrills on destruction. He will seduce others to serve him and destroy anything he sees as worthless, likely a result of his traumatic childhood.
History[]
Background[]
Dune was an immortal being who had fought many generations of Pretty Cure, until he faced Cure Flower, who sacrificed her power to end the battle evenly. However, Dune saw it as a defeat and fell into a deep sleep to restore his power, while Sabaku and his minions fought Cure Moonlight.
Present[]
At the awakening of the third fairy, Dune orders Sabaku from his private asteroid, while heading to Earth in order to destroy the Cures. When he realizes that Pretty Cure is getting stronger, he gives Sabaku three Dark Bracelets to power up the three minions. However, Sabaku still fails.
Eventually, Dune arrives at Earth and sends a Desert Seed that quickly turns into a Desert Devil, which the Cures easily defeat with thanks to their newly acquired Super Silhouette's help. Dune later returns at Christmas to fight the Cures and easily knocks them unconscious. Before he can regain his power that Cure Flower sealed away in her necklace however, the Great Heart Tree arrives and Dune forces Kaoruko to witness him make it wilt entirely. However, those who have been purified by the Pretty Cure still persist, thus hope continues to exist and the Cures and their fairies retain their powers.
The Final Battle[]
Shortly after Dark Cure is defeated, Dune arrives and battles Sabaku, Moonlight and Blossom. He effortlessly defeats them, but Sabaku sacrifices himself to protect Yuri and Tsubomi from the explosion. Enraged, Yuri attempts to fight him only for Tsubomi to reminds her that Pretty Cure fight with love. The two transform into Blossom and Moonlight and battle Dune, with Marine and Sunshine joining them. All four Cures use their Forte Wave attacks against Dune followed by Marine and Sunshine combining to use Floral Power Fortissimo and Blossom and Moonlight to combine to use the same. All four hit Dune at the same time and then call forth the HeartCatch Mirage and use HeartCatch Orchestra against him.
However, even it doesn't hinder Dune, who tells the girls that their love would never overcome his hatred. He then grows into gigantic size and attacks Earth, but Blossom tells him that their love may not be strong separately, but is together. The four HeartCatch Cures then merge into Infinity Silhouette and uses the Pretty Cure Fist Punch to purify Dune, finally defeating him and restoring Earth.

Trivia[]
- During a transmission to Sabaku and Dark Cure, a dark-colored creature can be seen on Dune's left shoulder. It is unknown what this creature is or if it is merely part of Dune. It is possible it could be similar to the fairies and is what grants him his power. Its origins are also unknown.
- Even after 50 years, it would appear Kaoruko Hanasaki still has a connection with Dune, as she can feel he is returning. This connection could be explained by the fact Cure Flower sealed his powers and it is that which is what connects the two.
- Dune is the only villain of the Pretty Cure franchise who can become a planet-sized being, only been beaten by the movie villain Black Hole.
- Dune is the name of the main villain of the anime series Casshern Sins, which was created by the same group that made Heartcatch Pretty Cure!.
