I will bury that hateful rod in darkness and return the world to dust!
~ Druaga before his battle with Gilgamesh in The Nightmare of Druaga.

Druaga is the main antagonist of the Babylonian Castle Saga franchise.

Druaga is a powerful demon intent on enslaving and ruling over all of humanity, almost always appearing alongside the titular "Tower of Druaga", in which he resides. He is the archenemy of Gilgamesh and Ki.

In Namco X Capcom, he is voiced by Fumihiko Tachiki. In the Tower of Druaga anime series, he is voiced by Jōji Nakata in the Japanese version and by Chris Cason in the English version.

Appearance[]

Druaga is a large demon with green skin, eight arms, and four legs. He has yellow eyes and wears a horned helmet and an armour breastplate.

Biography[]

Original Continuity[]

Pre-Quest of Ki[]

At some point in the past, Druaga was slain, his revival prevented by the Blue Crystal Rod, a powerful artefact created by Anu, the king of the gods, which shone a light over the kingdom of Babylim that protected it from evil. However, when the Sumer Empire, a cruel empire led by the emperor Balarant which had conquered Babylim, heard of the rod's power, they began construction of a tower tall enough to reach the heavens, so as to take the Blue Crystal Rod for themselves. Angered by this, Anu struck the tower with a bolt of lightning, destroying much of it in the process. But the damage was already done, as the tower blocked out the light from the Blue Crystal Rod long enough for Druaga to regain his lost power and revive himself. He summoned himself an army, rebuilt the tower, and stole the Blue Crystal Rod, hiding it deep within what would now become known as the Tower of Druaga.

The Quest of Ki[]

After Druaga's take over of the tower, the goddess Ishtar tasked a priestess named Ki with an ill-fated mission to recover the Blue Crystal Rod and return it to Anu. Aided by the holy dragon Quox, she ascended the tower, hindered by the hordes of monsters under Druaga's command. Once she reached the 60th floor, however, Druaga turned her to stone, and split the rod into three separate rods, scattering them around various rooms of the tower. The same happened to Quox, with him being split into three dragons, all of them corrupted to evil by Druaga's power.

The Tower of Druaga[]

Gilgamesh, more commonly referred to as Gil, was the prince of the kingdom of Babylim, who was reduced to the role of a slave after the Sumer Empire's takeover, and was a close friend of Ki. Upon hearing of what happened in the tower, Gil prayed to the gods to give him the power to save her. The god Anu granted his wishes, gifting Gil a set of magical gold armour. Braving Druaga's armies of monsters, among them Druaga's right-hand Succubus and a brainwashed Quox, Gil managed to obtain the three Crystal Rods, and headed to the 59th floor to face Druaga. Before entering the battle himself, Druaga sent Wizards, Hyper Knights and a fake copy of Quox to challenge Gil, all of which were swiftly defeated. Despite Druaga's immense power and speed, Gil was able to slay Druaga, allowing Gil to restore the Blue Crystal Rod and save Ki. Druaga's demise seemingly restored Quox to his normal self as well.

The Return of Ishtar[]

With Druaga's death, the tower returned to the ruined state it was in when Anu destroyed it, and the monsters within it grew far more fiercer than before. During Gil and Ki's descent of the tower, they can discover a room apparently containing Druaga's grave. Gil and Ki can also encounter a powerful enemy on certain floors named the Soul of Druaga, which is strangely identical in appearance to Gil.

The Blue Crystal Rod[]

Druaga makes a minor appearance in this game, with the player having the ability to speak with him in the underworld in certain routes.

Spin-offs and Side Stories[]

The Nightmare of Druaga: Fushigi no Dungeon[]

Three years after the events of the original series, Ki and Gil were set to be married and Gil was to be crowned king of Babylim. However, the sorceress named Skulld kidnapped Ki the night before the ceremony, taking her to ruins of the Tower of Druaga, forcing Gil to once again enter the tower to save her. Gil, with help from the Shrine Mother Callindra, manages to free Ki and defeat Skulld. When Ki is freed, she immediately runs off, telling Gil that there is something she must do.

When Gil goes to Ishtar's sanctuary, he sees visions of Ki in a destroyed Babylim, surrounded by bodies, thinking she has killed Gil. Once Gil finds Ishtar, she explains that the visions he witnessed were of an alternate future, where Babylim was destroyed on Gil and Ki's wedding day. She tells Gil that the Blue Crystal Rod which he brought down from the Tower of Druaga, was in actuality the Dark Crystal Rod in disguise, and that during her imprisonment, Succubus planted a cursed seed inside of Ki which was the key to activating the Dark Crystal Rod. To marry Gil, Ki gave up her role as a shrine maiden, and by extension the protection of Ishtar, allowing the seed inside of Ki to activate the rod and engulf the world in darkness. Ishtar then reveals that Skulld was in fact the Ki from the world he was shown, who went back in time to prevent the seed activating by kidnapping her past self and being slain by Gil, trapping herself in a time loop in the process. To break the loop, Gil must go back in time himself, and destroy the source of the seed's power, Druaga, using the power of the true Blue Crystal Rod. Unable to learn the method Ki used to transcend time, Gil is granted the Stone of Void, which transports his soul into his past body, before he first defeated Druaga.

After recovering the pieces of the Blue Crystal Rod and defeating Succubus, Gil once again faces Druaga on the 59th floor. Shocked by the fact Gil is in possession of the true Blue Crystal Rod, Druaga realizes that Succubus has been defeated, and explains how he always intended to get slain by Gil, as he would then be resurrected as an even stronger demon when the seed in Ki awakened. Druaga then vows to destroy the Blue Crystal Rod and avenge his fallen servant, engaging Gil in battle. Druaga ends up being beaten by Gil, but Succubus suddenly appears, fusing with Druaga to create "Ultimate Druaga". Even with their powers combined, Gil manages to kill their mutated form, defeating Druaga and Succubus once and for all. Gil then frees Ki from her imprisonment, and they are finally able to get married.

After the wedding, Gil decides to climb the Tower Between Heaven and Earth and return the Blue Crystal Rod to Anu, as he doesn't think humans should keep relying on the protection of the gods. During his ascent, he is shocked to encounter both Druaga and Succubus yet again, who state that they are now guardians of heaven, with seemingly no memories of their past lives. They are insulted when Gil refers to them as demons, and attack him for his insolence. Gil eventually comes across Ishtar, who explains that Gil has freed the souls of Druaga and Succubus, and that they truly do now protect the path to heaven. Once Gil reaches Anu at the top of the tower, Anu is unconvinced that humanity stands a chance without the aid of the gods, and forces Gil to fight Ki to prove his determination. Anu eventually gives in, and allows Gil to give the Blue Crystal Rod back to him, leaving humanity to fend for themselves.

The Tower of Druaga: The Recovery of BABYLIM[]

Considered a prequel to the anime, it is set around 80 years before the beginning of the anime series, soon after Gil first defeated Druaga, possibly taking place concurrently to the events of The Blue Crystal Rod. In the game, the Tower of Druaga has reappeared, and monsters have begun growing stronger. With Gil and Ki missing, Sargon, Babylim's prime minister, enlists the help of adventurers to investigate the tower. Druaga himself was added late into the game's lifespan, being added on January 27th 2016, as a boss on the tower's highest floors.

Seme COM Dungeon: Drururuaga[]

100 years after the events of the original Tower of Druaga, Druaga has returned, with Gilsh, a descendant of Gil, being the one tasked with stopping him. This time, Druaga uses the Diamond Mace to become Drururuaga, which while visually identical to his normal form, is far more powerful.

Druaga Online: The Story of Aon[]

Druaga has once again been revived, this time facing off against Gil, Ki, the battle maiden Walküre and the ancient machine Xeovalga. Druaga takes on multiple new forms in this game, including Dominion Druaga and God Druaga.

The Labyrinth of Druaga[]

Set some time after the events of The Blue Crystal Rod, Druaga returns, this time kidnapping Ki and imprisoning her inside a giant underground maze hidden beneath his tombstone.

The Tower of Druaga: The Aegis of Uruk/The Tower of Druaga: The Sword of Uruk[]

Set around 80 years after the events of the original series, Druaga returns and begins terrorizing the citizens of Babylim once more. Gil, now king, sends the Uruk Royal Military to eliminate Druaga, aided by adventurers known as "Climbers". The series follows Jil, a Climber who hopes to defeat Druaga and be revered as a hero.

Tower of Druaga (attraction)[]

Druaga serves as the the final boss of the attraction, a dark ride/shooting game hybrid which was exhibited at the 1990 International Garden and Greenery Exposition, before being moved to Namco's "Wonder Eggs" amusement park. Druaga is tough to beat, as his weak point is illuminated with the same red light as the one used for your gun's aim. Defeating him allows you to save Ki, gaining you the title of "Gold Knight".
