Der Fuehrer's Face - Full length

The song the marching band sung (WARNING: may offend some viewers, contains WWII propaganda)

Everyone of foreign race Will love Der Fuehrer's Face When we bring to the world dis order.
~ The marching band playing Der Fuehrer's Face.

The Marching Band are the secondary villains of the infamous World War II Donald Duck cartoon "Der Fuehrer's Face" - which was one of the most daring attacks on Nazi Germany by Disney at the time and like many propaganda cartoons it was seldom released following the end of the war due to numerous controversies, however it has become more well-known in recent times in part due to the strange imagery of the titular Donald Duck in Nazi uniform.

Biography[]

The Marching Band consists of the leading figures of the Axis Powers, Joseph Goebbels on the trombone, Heinrich Himmler on the snare drum, Hideki Tojo on the sousaphone, Hermann Goering on the piccolo and Benito Mussolini on the bass drum, deliberately drawn in a ridiculous fashion and playing exaggerated instruments to the tune of "Der Fuehrer's Face", which they sing proudly as they march across a land parodying the extremes of Nazi philosophy.

In this nightmarish reality, the Axis Powers seem to have taken control of the world or at the very least a large chunk of it, to the extent they even shaped entire buildings in the shape of swastikas, they also made a point to harass anyone they came across. When they reach Donald's house, they forcefully wake him up with a baton. Later as Donald eats his meager breakfast war rations, the marching band interrupts and forces him to read Mein Kampf. They then force him to march with them to an artillery shell factory while Her Goering kicks him. Upon arriving at the factory Donald is forced to screw the caps onto artillery shells for "48 hours a day". Eventually Donald receives a "vacation with pay" which consists of a large poster of the alps that Donald looks at before he does several swastika shaped exercises. Donald is then chosen to work overtime by special decree of the Fuehrer. Donald goes mad soon into this and has a nervous breakdown.

Thankfully for Donald Duck, it is ultimately revealed that this nightmarish reality was simply a dream and he wakes up, thankful that he lives in a free society in the United States.

Personality[]

At first, the Marching Band seem to be completely loyal to Hitler and truly believe in Nazism, even forcing Donald to read Mein Kampf and constantly hailing Hitler, but it is later revealed they are reluctant and cynical followers, mentioning that though Hitler promised they'd never be slaves they still work like slaves and while Hitler, brags, lies rants, and raves, they work into their graves. They also mention it would be swell if Hitler was killed by an artillery shell. Despite their reluctance and dislike of Hitler they still seem adamant on enforcing Nazi policy and threaten Donald if he shows even the slightest potential of disliking Nazism or Hitler.

Trivia[]

  • While they are the most active antagonists in the cartoon the true overarching main antagonist is Hitler himself, who despite never physically appearing in the film, is shown numerous times via pictures, the Marching Band also continually praises him and is akin to mindless enforcers of his law (which is deliberately shown as chaotic and flawed).
  • The song is a mockery of the ideals of a flawed ideology, most notable are the deliberate mispronouncing of certain words or phrases, for example, "bring the world dis order", showing that while the Axis Powers believed they were bringing "order" in reality they were bringing chaos to the world, true to this theme the Marching Band are portrayed as comical, bullying figures who follow orders blindly, leading them to become slaves to the very regime they champion as making them "strong".
