I sometimes happen to give a second chance... But never a third one.
~ Darkhell (dropping a servant who failed one time too many to his doom).

Darkhell, the Dark Sorcerer, formerly called Galen, is one of the two main villains of the French comic book series Les Légendaires (The Legendaries); and its prequel Les Légendaires : Origines (The Legendaries: Origins), along with Kalandre. Once a boy corrupted by dark powers, he is now an immensely powerful sorcerer, archenemy of the titular heroes. He is linked to most foes they faced, while Kalandre orchestrated the entire plot. Darkhell is killed in the middle of the story by the God Anathos, but returns in the World Without continuity after Kalandre's death.

Personality[]

As Galen[]

Back then, Galen used to be a caring son and devoted brother, liked in his town. He did not suffer injustice and refused to let people die no matter what. Yet, he was cheeky and something of a show-off, disliking being lectured and even more the condescension from people feeling "superior". He was also curious, adventurous and daring, willing to sneak around and touch nice-looking things, which would seal his fate. Moreover, he was bold, brave, and fiercely protective of his loved ones, even against impossible odds, being deeply devoted to his newfound clan.

Alas, the grief and shock he felt at his family's death made it vulnerable to the evil sabre Ténébris' influence, which makes him cold, haughty and sadistic, not unlike the monster he would later become. The strain of the countless battles and the pain of losing the love of his life would later finish to corrupt him.

As Darkhell[]

In the core franchise, Darkhell is the typical Dark Lord: cold, serious, cruel, ruthless, scornful, ambitious and unforgiving. He cares nothing for all the lives he tramples for his gain. As Shaki says it, his idea of an alliance is to order people around as long as he needs before mercilessly killing them.

Despite this, he can be very courteous and genuine praise allies and foes alike. He is also very clever, learned and manipulative, playing people into doing what he wants very well. Finally, he displays a strong sense of irony, sarcasm, and especially gallows humour at his victim's expense. Darkhell is very collected. He proves highly cautious and prepares for the worse, no matter how good things look for him. When angry, he seethes with cold, controlled wrath without losing focus. Yet, he is strongly prideful, reacting poorly to perceived mockery, and becoming livid when struck in the face.

Le visage de Darkhell

Darkhell's face before the Jovenia Incident.

It must be noted that Darkhell harbours sincere respect for his servants, lamenting his right-hand-man's desertion, and even for his enemies. He views his monsters as his "children" and, quite exceptional for a Dark Lord, he harbours deep fatherly love for his daughter Ténébris, even greater than his thirst for power.

He might sometimes withhold the truth, but he values her opinion and they have a very close relationship. Should anyone harm Ténébris in any way, they would instantly suffer Darkhell's fury.

In the World Without Cycle, Darkhell never created Abyss but still welcomes him as a son. He is willing to follow his directives, for he admits that his "son" knows more than him. Still, he makes clear who is in command and greatly dislikes when said directives sound too much like orders. He is also curious about his family in the other reality.

Powers and Abilities[]

Darkhell is a formidable sorcerer, who despite being human could surpass and defeat the most powerful Demon Sorcerer of all Alysia. He displays both immense raw magical power and skills with sorcery, potions and other forms of magic. He is even well-versed in scientific fields. It is repeatedly stated that he was even more formidable back in his prime, and it shows after he gets turned back to a child by the Jovenia Incident. He can talk no matter the distance through bewitched orbs, enchant objects for various use like scrying or shape-shifting, levitate, light magical fires, animate objects and conjure stony hands from the ground, among others.

Darkhell devised a technique of genetic manipulation he calls "Maginetic", using it to create all of his monsters. This alone gives enough proof of his skills, considering the abilities he granted them (mostly Abyss who is arguably as powerful as him), and the many magical devices he created. It was most likely Darkhell himself who devised the powerful bewitched weapons wielded by Ténébris and his other henchmen. Also, he has extensive knowledge of the legends of Alysia and the various kinds of magical creatures and divine artefacts in existence.

Darkhell is absolutely deadly in battle. He attacks with purple energy blasts ranging from "mere" bolts that knock out a hardened fighter to tremendous waves, huge lightning bolts, and destructive onslaughts all around him. He can raise magic barriers to stop attacks, reflect back spells, or imprison things or people; or spell-cast through glowing lilac runes, conjuring shields or energy blasts. While he is too old for it, he was trained intensively in all forms of combat. The evil sword Ténébris surrounded him with a power-boosting, demon-shaped golden aura.

Power Boost in the Anathos Cycle[]

When he served under the Guardian, Darkhell was made even more powerful. The divine entity granted him a pair of demonic-looking wings, enabling him to fly on his own, and granted him access to divine magic. With that he had even greater control over the elements and could use way deadlier attacks. He proved able to raise a subterranean room over the surface, to open wormholes, and to hurl Spheres of Destruction or waves of slashing energy.

Still, despite this vast improvement, he was no match against the God Anathos, until he fused back with his "Good Half" Élysio. This made them so tremendously powerful that they overcame the Jovenia Effect, turning everyone to children, and could fight on par with Anathos himself, forcing him to resort to underhanded tricks.

Darkhell's Monsters[]

The different kinds of Monsters that Darkhell created:

  • Dragonites: Large and powerful dragon-like humanoids, orange and overweight, serving as the foot-soldiers of Darkhell's army.
  • Carbonions: Flying monsters looking like oversized orange dragons, used as mounts by the Dragonites and Darkhell's other soldiers. They can breathe powerful streams of fire and usually attack targets on the ground while flying out of reach.
  • Darkhellions: Darkhell's most powerful and dangerous creations. They are huge, dragon-like monsters whose spit can encase anyone in non-lethal ice to capture targets without killing them. They are also able to fire venomous stingers that turn anyone into a Chaos Shade.
  • Chaos Shades: Anyone struck by a Darkhellion's stinger turns into a demonic and bloodthirsty Chaos Shade, bound to serve Darkhell for eternity. Chaos Shades look like humanoids made of shadow that can only be destroyed by spells and enchanted weapons.

The Darkhell Chronicles[]

Galen, futur Darkhell

Galen, Darkhell as a boy

Darkhell's rise to power is told in the spin-off Les Chroniques de Darkhell (The Darkhell Chronicles). About a century before the start of the story, he was a boy named Galen, living in a remote village with his mother and his little brother Hellon. At that time, remembered as the Dark Days of Alysia, magic was forbidden and ostracised, its users called by the derogatory slur “Magicors”.

Magicors were hunted by the mighty knights of the Order of Arkanis, once dedicated to protecting people from supernatural threats, who became hateful extremists following a devastating battle against a highly powerful being, known as the Unicorn Demon.

Meanwhile, Libran, the leader of the ominous Ultima Fraternity owned the golden sabre Genesis source of white magic and was looking for its double, the evil sabre Ténébris source of dark magic. Both being creations of the God Agamnon, killed by his peers for offering magic to mortals, granting power and eternal youth to their wielders, at the cost of fusing with them and turning them to demons. Ténébris was in possession of Kogan, Libran's younger brother leader of the travelling circus called the Fantasticos.

Ténébris[]

One fated day, the Fantasticos came to Galen's village, only to get shunned, with Galen and his brother sneaking in their carts and stealing Ténébris. The same day, the cruel came by, not caring that the villagers could not pay the fee due to the poor harvest.

Galen offered Ténébris as a payment, but his mother earned the collector's wrath. In retaliation, he killed her and Hellon and destroyed Galen's arm with a double purple beam. Desperate, Galen seized Ténébris, which regrew his arm and enabled him to slay the collector and his attack werewolf Rasgor, but he fainted right after.

Desperate, Galen seized Ténébris, which regrew his arm and enabled him to slay the collector and his attack werewolf Rasgor, but he fainted right after. The villagers tried to burn him for being a Magicor, and he only owed his survival to the Fantasticos. Kogan told a grieving Galen that he was now bound to Ténébris and risked corruption, but that it was possible to free him from it. Yet, Ténébris' awakening  was felt by the Ultima Fraternity, who sent the parasite Démogar to fetch it.

Possessing a young girl with huge lightning powers called Fleur de Foudre (French for "Lightning Flower"), Démogar fought Kogan, who defeated it decades ago. Refusing to let people he did not know sacrifice themselves for him, Galen defeated Démogar with Ténébris in hand, but came very close to get fully possessed, being only saved by the female elemental elf Cherylad.

The Bloody Crossroad[]

The Fantasticos found shelter in the royal castle of Sabledoray ("sable doré" being French for "golden sand"), but Lord Caldérius, Master of the Order of Arkanis was also there with his daughter Kalypso and his son Kénian, in a diplomatic meeting with King Kashmir, a friend of Kogan. Galen and Cherylad met Kénian, Kalypso, Prince Sélim and Princess Assouane, when the royal children sneaked out of the capital and were threatened by insect monsters. They only owed their lives to the princes' Jaguarian beast-woman bodyguard Felisha, for Kénian and Kalypso were paralyzed by fright.

Back in the castle, Lord Caldérius persuaded King Kashmir of his fanatical belief of an upcoming war against Magicors was inevitable to strike an alliance. Unfortunately, the Ultima Fraternity sent Cadaveron, a rogue beast-man from the Beast Kingdom of Jaguarys, whose cursed sabres absorb and enslave the souls of jaguarians he killed as ghosts immune to normal weapons.

Kogan and Cherylad were forced to unveil their powers, with Kogan berating Caldérius' fanaticism and calling for a truce. Alas, things turned for the worst when Kogan lost his magic-suppressing gauntlet, revealing himself as the Unicorn Demon and killing Caldérius. (He later explains that Ténébris transformed him after he found it in his youth and it bonded with him, even after exorcising it away from him.) Galen had no choice than to knock out the demon with Ténébris' full power and revert it back to human with the gauntlet, while Cherylad used her powers to make them escape. Sadly, Caldérius' grieving children declared them enemies of Arkanis. Finally, King Kashmir exiled both Arkanis and Magicors, outlawing magic on pain of death.

The Judgment of Shadows[]

Cherylad was arrested by her older brother, the Elementary Elf Cheryskal, who brought her back to the Elven World of Astria in another dimension, to be judged for the murder of many students of the school of Elementary Magic. She was about to receive the Sentence of Shadows, the capital penalty in Astria, and have her soul torn out to become a Soulless One: an unfeeling slave devoid of all personality and memories.

Irked by her "martyrdom drama", Galen did not believe in Cherylad's guilt. In fact she covered for brother, who had failed to contain his inner darkness him but got his memories erased. After Cheryskal lost control again, Galen jumped in the pit after Cherylad, where he explains that he sacrificed himself for her sake exactly as she did for her brother. Galen's soul got devoured without affecting him, but they are saved as Cheryskal jumps into the pit to atone. Back on Alysia, they found the Fantasticos with the Ultima Fraternity, asking their help to save the world.

The Dream of Ultima[]

Teenage Galen with Ténébris

Teenage Galen wielding Ténébris.

In the following five years, Galen was taught fighting and magic, gaining a gauntlet to fully control Ténébris. He travelled Alysia, saving Magicors from being hanged despite ending an epidemic. Arkanis ambushed Ultima with a captive Felisha, killing Cadaveron. Galen and Cherylad were now romantically involved, but frustrated by Kogan's time-consuming experiments, and sceptical towards Ultima’s goal to resurrect the God of Magic Agamnon and to transform everyone into Magicors, fearing that far from nullifying hatred it might ignite apocalyptic wars.

Felisha told them about the Edenic land of Nirvanis, where magic-wielders can live freely, but Libran dismissed it as a mere myth. Libran later sent Galen, Cherylad and Felisha to search for Nirvanis with a peace offer. In the gloomy, mountainous land of Shiar, magic portals opened and the sorcerer Skroa the Cunning, last of the demonic birdmen Galinas, welcomed them to Nirvanis. Ironically, Darkhell would later become bitter rival with him.

War Against Arkanis[]

Galen et Cherylad

Galen and Cherylad, fighting during the Dark Days of Alysia

In the following battles, Galen and Cherylad would become romantically involved, fighting together to topple the Order of Arkanis and end discrimination against Magicors.

Alas, Ténébris' corruption would blight his soul, until Cherylad's death irredeemably broke him, making him into the evil sorcerer from the core series.

Reign of Terror[]

Darkhell took over Shiar, and built himself the Casthell fortress. (His creations' names end with -Hell for the sake of puns. Casthell is pronounced like "castel" Old French for "castle".) It was later revealed that he was attracted by the concentration of magic there, due to the slumbering titan Kaminodoa, keeper of the gateway to the world where the gods exiled themselves millennia ago. Also, Kalandre pushed him into settling there.

There, he built a wondrous vault for his beloved, but gradually lost all memories of his previous heroic life. He lost his bond with the Ténébris sabre but kept its remains, naming his daughter after it and modelling his mask and most of his creation after its design. He cast a spell to expand his life-span for over a century, turning his skin white.

Reign of Terror[]

Casthell

Casthell, Darkhell's castle

There, he built a wondrous vault for his beloved, but gradually lost all memories of his heroic life, and his bond to the Ténébris sabre, but he kept its remains, naming his daughter after it and modelling his mask and most of his creation after its design.

He cast a spell to expand his life-span for over a century, turning his skin white. He built enormous armies of monsters to take over Alysia, razing cities and spreading death and strife all over. becoming feared worldwide.

Fifty years before the story, Darkhell defeated Skroa, keeping him in a magic-suppressing globe and using him for awful experiments and tortures. At some point, he created the powerful parasite Abyss to gain a disciple, but left it in a bottle, judging him a failed experiment.

Thirty years before the start of the story, Darkhell secretly bargained with Queen Adeyrid ("a des rides" being French for "has wrinkles") the mage queen of Orchidia, who could not bear children after an accident. He enabled her to have a magic pregnancy, but only to gain an heiress, born with the royal line's huge magic potential. Darkhell stole the baby, calling her Ténébris after his old sabre, and raising her as his daughter. He raised her to be a formidable warrior, and as a teenager sent her to the dangerous Erkanos island to slay a powerful monster as a baptism of fire. So she became general of his armies, commanding his flying ship the Hydarkos.

Ténébris approached the barbarian Razzia, after he slaughtered the Army of the Thousand Wolves for having razed his hometown, and convinced him to become Darkhell's right-hand man, dreaded as Korbo the Red Shadow ("corbeau" being French for "crow"). Little did Razzia know that his hometown had been in fact razed by Darkhell's forces, who planted false evidence to divert suspicions. Korbo and Ténébris led Darkhell's armies and eventually fell in love. At some point they killed a couple of inventors providing weapons to Darkhell's enemies, but could not bear to kill their daughter, giving her to a travelling warrior.

Around five years before the start of the series, Darkhell visited the Native-American-like Comanshawas tribe (a pun on "Comanche" and "Comment ça va ?", French for "How do you do?") to get magic plants and learn shamanic magic from them. Not knowing him due to their isolation, they welcomed him warmly, only to end up slaughtered. Shaki, the sole survivor, gave Darkhell the scar on his right cheek, but was struck by a spell and left for dead.

Around the same time, Darkhell built a time-travel device called the Temporhell, but needed a power source. (The author Patrick Sobral explained that Darkhell did not want to use it to save Cherylad, being too far gone to prevent his own descent into evil and basically cease to exist.) He repeatedly attempted to abduct Princess Jadina of Orchidia (who was born from a similar spell used to birth Ténébris), to steal her powerful Eagle Staff and use it to power his Temporhell. Around the same time, locked in conflict against the Legendaries, the Dark Sorcerer realized that old age would catch up to him before he could conquer Alysia and started searching how to regain his youth.

Darkhell went to the cursed land of Klafooty (a pun on "clafoutis" a kind of French cake) and gained the Stone of Jovenia from the Guardian, protector of the Divine Stones, in exchange for creating the plant-like Zar-Ikos (a pun on the pronunciation of "les haricots", French for "the beans") and monsters to provide a challenge for heroes.

Les Légendaires : Origines[]

Danaël[]

Likely before obtaining the Stone of Jovenia, Darkhell resolved to abduct Jadina, the mage princess of Orchidia (and Ténébris' unknown little sister, born from a similar spell) to gain her Eagle Staff, an extremely powerful magical artefact that he could use to activate the Temporhell or vastly amplify his power. However, all of his men's attempts failed.

Raptor l'Ombre Verte

Raptor the Green Shadow

Darkhell orders one of his henchmen, Raptor the Green Shadow (a mighty lizard-man with a magical spear that can fire devastating enegry blasts), to bring him Jadina and the Eagle Staff with the promise of making him his right-hand man if he succeeds. (When Ténébris warns him that Raptor wants to overthrow him, Darkhell does not see him as a threat and merely counts on this as a bigger motivation.)

It turns out that Jadina is escorted by the elite knights known as the Silver Falcons, among whom the primary protagonist Danaël, his older brother Ikaël and his girlfriend Saryn. Raptor sends his soldiers to distract the Silver Falcons and kidnapps Jadina, killing Saryn's father in the process.

Danaël and Saryn (who befriended Jadina) rush after Raptor but they are no match for him and Danaël only owes his life to the intervention of the enigmatic Kalandre.

Danaël and Saryn eventually kill Raptor, but Saryn got stung by a Darkhellion's stinger and turns into a Chaos Shade. She then attacks the horrified Danaël and prepares to kill him, only to get destroyed by a grieving Jadina. Danaël and Jadina then decide to create a group of heroes above political intrigues that they call the Legendaries, and set out to defeat Darkhell to honour the memory of Saryn.

Gryfenfer[]

Dasyatis

Dasyatis, the Silent Death

Darkhell does not appears in person in the two following tomes of Origines, not even being mentioned in the second one, but it is revealed in the end of the third one that he recruited the dreaded female gladiator Dasyatis the Venomous, also known as the Silent Death, as the Black Shadow: Ténébris' most fearsome general.

This revelation is what motivates the beast-man Gryfenfer (known as Gryf in the main series) to join the Legendaries, since Dasyatis once defeated his big brother figure Samaël, leaving him for dead and driving him mad, leading to a battle to the death between them.

Razzia[]

Korbo and Ténébris are sent by Darkhell as emissaries to the Kingdom Cymbalia, bringing a statue as a gift to King Absalon and offering an alliance with Darkhell, but the king is wary and asks to ponder it for a few days. He later throw them in jail, knowing that Darkhell does not intend to respect his promise, to use them as leverage.

Unbeknownst to them, their mission was a diversion and Dasyatis was hidden in the statue to steal the Divine Egg protecting the city, enabling Darkhell’s armies to attack. Prince Larsen kills his father and frees Korbo and Ténébris, accept Darkhell’s alliance, but the king kills his son with his dying breath, both having been Kalandre’s pawns.

Korbo is attacked by Sheila, his little sister who was saved by Kalandre, craving revenge against Darkhell’s forces. She is no match and dies by his hand, but he hears her calling his former name Razzia, realizing who she is. Before dying, she reveals who really destroyed their hometown. Enraged, Razzia reject the name Korbo and takes his sister’s sabre, the Léviathan, swearing to kill Darkhell with it to avenge his family and atone for his crimes.

Conflict Against The Legendaries[]

Needing an Elementary Elf's magic to hatch the Divine Egg, Darkhell sends Dasyatis to capture Shimy, bearer of the title. Despite the tortures, Shimy refuses to help Darkhell, and is eventually saved by the Legendaries, who fight Dasyatis. Danaël, Jadina and Gryff would recruit Shimy and Razzia, repeatedly foiling Darkhell's plans.

The Legendaries would ultimately storm Casthell just when Darkhell was finally about to rejuvenate himself with the Stone of Jovenia. Unfortunately, the Stone was shattered in the ensuing fight, causing everyone in Alysia to turn back into a child. Because of this, the Legendaries were shunned by the people and forced to disband. (It was eventually revealed that what would be called the Jovenia Incident was Kalandre's doing.)

Les Légendaires[]

Rebirth[]

File:Élysio.jpg

Élysio

The reunited Legendaries travel through Klafooty towards the Guardian's castle, to get the Stone of Crescia and give back the population its real age. There, they meet an amnesiac boy with incredible yet uncontrolled magical power named Élysio, who is pursuing the same goal. Despite their initial wariness, the Legendaries eventually befriend Élysio and travel with him.

However, when the group comes across the Zar-Ikos, it is revealed that Élysio is none other than Darkhell himself, who survived the Jovenia Incident at the cost of his memories. The Zar-Ikos capture the legendaries and prepare a potion to restore their lord's memories, but the Legendaries manage to escape and to take Élysio with them before he can drink it.

Before entering the Guardian's castle, they tie him to a tree to prevent him from becoming Darkhell again, but Gryf (who feels bound by the promise he made to help Élysio regain his memories) unties him and give him the potion despite the risk, asking him to remember his gesture if he were to return to his old ways.

After Danaël gains the Stone of Crescia (which gets stolen by Skroa), Élysio is nowhere to be seen and the vial of potion is seen lying on the ground... empty.

War in Astria[]

Oh they will find a way. They always do.
~ Darkhell (knowing that seemingly impossible odds are not an obstacle for the Legendaries).

A few months later, the Legendaries and their rival team the Fabulous are tasked by the King of Larbos to go help the elves who are plagued by a magical plague spreading all across Astria. In Astria, they learn that the plague was caused by an ominous red cloud around surrounding the gloomy island where live the piranhis, the elves’ hereditary enemies. They also learn that a human sorcerer saved the elves from the plague; in fact none other than Élysio.

Skalp-Hell

Skalp-Hell and General Rasga.

Meanwhile, the piranhis led by General Rasga made an alliance with a sorcerer called Skalp-Hell, who needs their help to uncover the "Treasure of the Gods" buried under their land, and promised that he would use it to create a new, much more hospitable world for them.

However, by digging too deep the piranhis unleashed the plague-bringing cloud, from which they were cured by Skalp-Hell. Unfortunately, the elves took it as a deliberate attack and both people are now at war.

Hearing that mighty warriors from Alysia defeated a squadron of piranhis, Skalp-Hell sends a shape-shifted piranhi spy in the elven royal castle to kill Élysio. The spy gets captured, but Skalp-Hell was able to watch his fight against the Legendaries and the Fabulous through a magic talisman.

Élysio later reveals that Skalp-Hell is none other than Darkhell. When Élysio drank the potion and recovered his memories, he refused to turn back into Darkhell and managed to expel the Dark Sorcerer from his body and mind. Alas, Darkhell did return as a separate being, now a child like everyone else. Darkhell went to Astria to find the "Treasure of the Gods" and Élysio, who now has the same powers as his "Evil Twin", tracked him down and gained the elves’ assistance, planning to defeat him for good.

Le Kréa Kaos

Darkhell in the Kréa-Kaos.

Darkhell eventually gets his hands on the "Treasure of the Gods", the Kréa-Kaos: a magic armour created to use the power of the Six Mystical Stones without danger, which even without the Stones is able to destroy an entire world to create a new one from it. Darkhell tells General Rasga that he will destroy Astria and give the world he will create from it to the piranhis, before destroying Alysia to replace it by a world under his control.

Élysio reveals his true identity to the elves and thanks to Jadina's magic he is able to prove that Darkhell is the cause of the war. Yet, in spite of the danger of the Kréa-Kaos, attacking the piranhis' island is impossible by sea and the piranhi army is specialized in airborne squadrons. Shimy then decides to attack from the sky and asks Élysio to brew a potion that would give wings to the entire elven army.

Knowing that his enemies are aware of his intentions, Darkhell activates the Kréa-Kaos and opens a dark vortex to engulf Astria, just before the elven army's attack. Shaki, who is now one of the Fabulous, attacks Darkhell to avenge the Comanshawas, only to get promptly defeated by General Rasga, who refuses to finish him off since he wants to waste as little lives as possible. Darkhell reminds him that the Kréa-Kaos will kill all elves, before noticing that Élysio is attempting to close the vortex. He hurls a huge bolt of magic lighting at his good counterpart, who is knocked down and fall into the ocean alongside Gryf who tried to help him.

Right after, Shimy's mother Captain Shamira attacks Rasga and is defeated from behind by Darkhell. As Rasga persists in sparing his foes, Darkhell loses patience and prepares to dispose of his now useless ally; revealing that millennia ago the piranhis willingly accepted to settle on their inhospitable island to protect the Kréa-Kaos on the God's behalf, before forgetting about it and coming to believe that the elves banished them.

Shimy enters the fray, rescuing her mother and General Rasga who call to their armies and order to stop the battle. Darkhell defeats Shimy who only owers her life to Danaël's and Jadina's intervention, and both armies confront the Dark Sorcerer, who laughs them off stating that the Kréa-Kaos makes him invincible. But Élysio, who got rescued, barges in and cast a spell to fuse back with Darkhell, pulling the Dark Sorcerer out of his weapon. Struggling against the fusion, Darkhell states that if he does not get back into the Kréa-Kaos, it will explode and destroy the entire island with everyone in it.

Élysio is counting on it, and he raises a magic barrier around them and the Kréa-Kaos to contain the explosion, sacrificing his life to stop Darkhell despite his friends' pleas. After this, the elves make peace with the piranhis who settle on the continent, and their population raises a giant statue in Élysio' likeness to honour his memory.

Return to the Past[]

You're getting on my nerves with your pretty words. A fight is won... WITH ACTIONS!
~ Darkhell (decimating the Legendaries).

Darkhell reappears in the following story arc, during which the fearsome pirate Captain Ceydeirom (a pun based on the French pronunciation of CD-ROM) teams up with Jadina's former fiancé, Prince Halan of Sabledoray to lure the Legendaries to the ruins of Casthell.

Capitaine Ceydeirom

Captain Ceydeirom

Ceydeirom and Halan want to use Jadina's Eagle Staff to activate the Temporhell and go back in time before Danaël and Jadina formed the Legendaries; to prevent the group's creation, and thus the Jovenia Incident, and reunite with their lost love. (Ceydeirom killed his wife for leaving him after the Jovenia incident and blames the Legendaries for it, while Halan persuaded himself that Danaël stole Jadina -who was never interested in him in the first place- from him.)

During the trip to the past, Danaël, Gryf and Shimy are separated from the rest of the group and end up helping Past-Danaël to go after Past-Jadina, who was encased into ice by a Darkhellion and brought to the flying fortress the Hydarkos. There, the two Danaëls engage a fight against Past-Ténébris, while Gryf and Shimy try to hijack the Hydarkos.

Meanwhile, Ceydeirom, Halan, Jadina and Razzia have reached the Casthell of the past. Just when Razzia points out that they might run into Past-Darkhell, the Dark Sorcerer appears behind him and restrains the group, save from Ceydeirom who promptly betrays Halan and pledges allegiance to Darkhell. Razzia then breaks free from his restrains and engages a fight against the Dark Sorcerer, but alone and in his child form, he stands no chance and ends up killed in front of the horrified Jadina (who cannot fight since Ceydeirom smashed her Eagle Staff to activate the Temporhell).

Then, Gryf and Shimy crash the Hydarkos against Casthell, causing Ténébris to die in her father's arms. Livid, Darkhell kills the two Legendaries and is about to finish Jadina off when Danaël takes the spell in her place... collapsing dead after confessing his feelings for the princess. Jadina only owes her life to Halan, who first fled cowardly but witnessed the meeting -and obvious interest- between Past-Danaël and Past-Jadina and finally understood Jadina's accusations of selfishness. Halan sneaks behind Darkhell and uses a Darkhellion's spit to encase them both in ice.

Captain Ceydeirom prepares to kill the emotionally broken Jadina from behind. However, her ancestor Jadilyna, an extremely powerful sorceress who turned herself into a Guardian Angel for her descendants after her death, takes possession of her and subdues the wretched pirate. She uses the Temporhell to cast him sixty millennia into the future (where he is put in a zoo by talking monkeys, the new dominant race, in a comical nod to Planet of the Apes); before going travelling to the past to destroy the Temporhell before Ceydeirom discovered it, preventing this entire disaster from ever happening.

The Anathos Cycle[]

Take care of the Legendaries. They would be the last hope of Alysia should I fail to kill Anathos! But above all else... take care of yourself my daughter!
~ Darkhell's/Élysio's farewell to Ténébris.

The Anathos Cycle begins when Darkhell invades the dreadful Prison Barek (a nod to Prison Break) to rescue his daughter Ténébris, who was imprisoned there after the Jovenia Incident. However, jail has changed Ténébris and she escapes to find her former lover Razzia. Later, the Legendaries' vacations are interrupted by a sour-looking Élysio and an overjoyed Darkhell, who attempt to kill them with a Sphere of Destruction.

The Legendaries are saved by Ténébris of all people, who uses her magic gauntlets to absorb the Sphere and reflect it back. Danaël then escapes to Astria with his group. Ténébris reveals that the Guardian saved Élysio and Darkhell after the Kréa-Kaos exploded, and offered to restore their bodies and vastly increase their powers in exchange for preventing the return of the fallen god Anathos.

They sought for the Bearer (Anathos' living jail which he took over) in vain for two years and now that Anathos is about to reincarnate within one of the Legendaries, they have no choice but to kill them all. Contrary to Élysio, who hates himself for trying to kill his friends, Darkhell was extremely eager to get back at the Legendaries and did not care the slightest for Alysia. But now that his beloved daughter has defected to their side, he hates himself as well for endangering her life.

File:Darkhell et Élysio sauvent Ténébris.jpg

Ténébris is saved by her "fathers".

Since Anathos cast a spell preventing the Guardian from locating him or the Legendaries, Darkhell asks him to locate Ténébris instead. Darkhell and Élysio find her and the Legendaries in the treasure room of the royal castle of the kingdom of Larbos. There, the Legendaries attempt to get the Alystory (the book describing the past and the future), but are confronted by Ikaël's Silver Falcons and by the Fabulous, who label them as traitors and outlaws.

Élysio raises the subterranean room over ground and slashes a way in to attack the Legendaries, but they use it as a way out and fly away in a nearby hot air balloon. As the sorcerers are about to kill them, they are struck by surprise by a stock of bombs sent by the Fabulous and forced to retreat.

While Élysio and Darkhell are incapacited, the Legendaries confront Anathos within the bearer and manage to defeat it, but they cannot prevent Anathos from reincarnating (within Danaël instead of Shimy as he expected). The God of Evil horribly decimates the remaining Legendaries and is about to kill Ténébris when her fathers appear just in time to save her.

Two sorcerers back in one.

Knowing that they are no match for Anathos, Élysio and Darkhell fuse back into one sorcerer, becoming so powerful that they bypass the effect of the Jovenia Incident and turn back to a young adult. The fused sorcerer opens a wormhole and instructs Ténébris to flee through it with the grievously wounded Legendaries.

The Guardian's champion battles the God of Evil and matches his physical might. Anathos fires a powerful energy blast, but once more Darkhell/Élysio matches him with a divine spell of his own. Unfortunately, Anathos sends his flying sword to pierce his foe from behind and the sorcerer gets struck and killed by both spells. (To add insult to injury, only a god can kill another god, so Darkhell and Élysio stood no chance to begin with.) Anathos then finishes the work by destroying the Guardian and his castle.

Two years later, when the Legendaries manage to defeat Anathos and his Hellions; backed up by the Silver Falcons, the Fabulous, the elves, the piranhis and Halan's army, Darkhell and Élysio are buried next to Danaël and hailed as heroes for their sacrifice. (But Darkhell's atrocities are not forgotten.)

World Without[]

After the Legendaries sacrifice their lives to destroy Kalandre, the Dynaméïs and the last Divine Stones she stole, reality is unravelled into a world where the Legendaries never existed. They are all now normal mortals, and their victories against Darkhell, Skroa and Anathos are the doing of the obnoxious writer Artémus del Conquisador ("con qui s’adore" being French for “self-adoring moron” and a pun on Conquistador), who had witnessed their last battle and told their story as a tribute, in best-selling novels that made him extremely wealthy.

Artémus is the only one who remembers the former world. It is later revealed that he rewrote reality on purpose, using the splinters of the Divine Stones embedded in his notebook. Having rewrote reality six times to give the Legendaries the happy ending he felt they deserved, only to see them die time and time again, he decided to give them normal lives to try and conjure their fate.

Artemus meets Danaël and Shimy, now married farmers, and enrols them in his quest to take back Anathos' sword that was stolen from him by the Fabulous, here a gang of thieves. It appears that the former Legendaries experience flashbacks of their previous live, and can unlock their former abilities under duress.

It also turns out that Darkhell was imprisoned in the gloomy jail of Prison Barek, after being defeated by Artémus. He spends his days chained and infused with anti-magic serum, but one day he is visited by Count Kasino, son of Invidia, Queen of Orchidia, who asks him about the "Maginetic" technique he devised.

Abyss, who has returned from space in the ancient universe to the new then storms the prison to free his “father”, slaughtering guards and killing Kasino on his wake. He tells him about the former world and the Legendaries. Darkhell asks him whether he had family in the former world, and Abyss lies to him, stating he had only him.

Later, they ambush the Fabulous, here a group of thieves led by Samaël the Indomitable who stole Anathos' sword from Artémus. They make short work of them, leaving only Toopie Maker alive and depart with the sword. Later, they destroy Artemus' hometown, trying in vain to attract his attention, with Darkhell noticing that he did not even know where his arch-enemy had grown up.

As the truth about the World Without starts spreading, King Larbosa of the Larbos Kingdom gathers every monarch to discuss the matter. Abyss crashes the Gamera Tree on the royal castle and turns her roots into loudspeakers, sending a message throughout Alysia, to bring him Artemus and the Legendaries, lest he executes the monarchs.

After Darkhell and Abyss slaughter the Silver Falcons, the Legendaries arrive on an airship and catch Darkhell unaware with a decoy of Artémus. Eager to assess the arch-enemies he heard so much about, Darkhell enters the fray, remarking Abyss' mastery of the Maginetic after he transmutes the Silver Falcons' dead mounts to monsters.

Darkhell contre Jadina

The evil sorcerer versus the heroic mage

As Jadina flies towards Gamera, Abyss yells at Darkhell to chase after her. In spite of his mounting annoyance at his “son” ordering him around, he complies.

Helped by Halan, now an airship pirate protected by Dasyatis of all people, Jadina frees Gamera from Abyss’ parasite, and before dying she restores the power she gave Jadina in the former world.

Darkhell kills Halan, but Ténébris, Razzia and Amy teleport there. Ténébris tries to reach out to Darkhell, but Abyss told him that one of the Legendaries is pretending to be his daughter, so he attacks her. Jadina defeats him, restoring his memories from the previous reality, and he falls from the Gamera Tree, seemingly to his death.

La fin d'Abyss

Darkhell, now Galen again, sacrifices himself to defeat Abyss.

With Gamera's power added to his own, Abyss makes short work of the Legendaries and all their friends. Just as he is about to finish them off, Danaël launches a desperation attack, hidden by Jadina’s blast of magic.

Suddenly, Abyss is held from behind by Darkhell of all people. Regaining his memories restored the hero he once was, and he sacrifices himself to defeat his "son" as an atonement, proudly calling himself Galen again.

Abyss is killed, but Princess Shun-Day of Orchidia, maddened by the reveal that her life is a fake, absorbs his power to destroy this "world of lies" prompting Artémus to sacrifice his life to make her disappear, using the last of the Divine Stones’ power to break the Jovenia effect.

The Legendaries (Cartoon)[]

Darkhell serves as the central villain of the lighter and softer cartoon adaptation of the comics.

Darkhell (cartoon)

Darkhell as he appears in the cartoon.

It takes place after his initial defeat and the Jovenia Incident, but contrary to the original, he survived and remained in power in Shiar, though his armies of monsters are no longer enough to threaten the world.

He was turned into a child like everyone else and seeks to destroy the Legendaries and find a way to take over the world, seconded by Ténébris.

Darkhell seeks many powerful artefacts or tries to gain control of powerful monsters to further his plans, though he must contend with the Legendaries and his old rival Skroa, who there was never turned into a powerless bird and still tries to take over the world before him.

Also, Ténébris is still in love with Razzia, trying to bring him back to her father's side but also favouring him, thus not being as serious in fighting the Legendaries as her Dark Lord father would like her to.
