~ Devil Jin
When the Devil Gene takes over Jin Kazama... Jinpachi was able to escape captivity as Honmaru fell. This triggered the evil that had been building up inside Jin. Two months later... Evil has utterly consumed Jin's mind, and a deadly force has awakened...
~ Prologue on Devil Jin in Tekken 5.

Devil Jin (also called "Debiru Jin") is a major antagonist in the Tekken franchise. The form Jin Kazama takes while under the Devil Gene's control, he was first introduced in Tekken 3 as an NPC, later becoming playable in Tekken 5 and returned to every game released after and it's a part of Devil's self.

He has been voiced by Isshin Chiba in all appearances.

Appearance[]

Devil Jin represents Jin Kazama after the Devil Gene, an inherent gene of the Hachijo-tainted Mishima bloodline, takes over him. Devil Jin's appearance remains close to his human form, but with added demonic traits, such as forward pointing horns, tattoos, bones protruding from his forearm and he is paler. Devil Jin was born from the lost power half of Devil Kazuya, originating from relationship between Kazuya Mishima and Jun Kazama, resulting the former unknowingly impregnant the latter and imprinted half of his power into their unborn son, Jin, shortly before his battle against Heihachi Mishima where Kazuya too late to realize behind his sudden lost against Heihachi before being thrown into the lava-less volcano in Tekken 2. The way how the half of Devil's power being imprinted inside Jin eventually explains how Kazuya was born through the actual origin of Kazumi Mishima, her home clan Hachijo and the Devil Gene by Heihachi to the journalist who works for Lars and Lee.

Personality[]

Devil Jin is extremely arrogant, aggressive and brooding. He seeks to achieve ultimate power, and will do whatever it takes to achieve it. He is also shown to be a very sadistic individual, as he has a habit of laughing at the suffering of his foes during his win animations. Like a typical demon he thinks of mortals, including Jin Kazama and his body, as weak.

In Tekken: Blood Vengeance and Violet's ending in Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Jin Kazama appears to be able to have complete control of his Devil form. His identity is in fact his own and not the demon, who despises Jin and does not know who Xiaoyu is (he only feels like he should know her). Jin's control of the Devil is non-canonical to the actual story, where Jin has absolutely no control over Devil. In the Devil Within minigame Jin has also no control over his constant transformations and are caused by the evil ruins of Ogre that awake the demon who wants to destroy everything (the player of course can choose when to use Devil Jin).

Unlike Devil Kazuya, Devil Jin does not seem to remember everything about Jin. In Devil Jin's Scenario Campaign mode, Eddy Gordo thinks Jin is sick and Nina Williams has to intervene, telling Devil that he will give the actual Jin back. Although Jin knows Kuma and banished him, Devil does not recognize the bear, nor does recognize Hwoarang. Devil Jin is also a bit clueless about the Kazama family and is surprised of the negative feeling caused by Asuka. Instead, Devil knows well about Jinpachi, Heihachi, and Kazuya Mishima. He never mentions if he remembers that himself and Devil Kazuya used to be simply a single Devil and lived inside Kazuya's body.

During the same mode, Kazuya speaks to Devil Jin as the entity he used to fight twenty years ago and since Devil Jin used to be part of him he wants that power back. Being chaotic, Devil also protests against his own creator and former master Azazel and wants his power for himself. He shares the same love for fighting and creepy places with Bryan Fury.

Biography[]

Devil Jin made his first early appearances in Jin's Tekken 3 and Tekken 4 endings, as well as in the non-canonical Tekken Tag Tournament.

In the story mode for Tekken 5/Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection Story Mode, Devil Jin is the secondary antagonist, after Jinpachi Mishima and his demonic spirit. In his non-canonical ending in Tekken 5, he absorbs Jinpachi's power. Also in Devil Jin's non-canonical Story Mode, Jin's identity is already lost forever.

Tekken 3[]

Jin Kazama inherited the traits of the Devil Gene from his father, Kazuya Mishima. Following the second King of Iron Fist Tournament, the half of the Devil that had fled from Kazuya attempted to inhabit the body of his unborn child, Jin, but failed. Jin's mother, Jun Kazama, fought this part of Devil off, but it returned fifteen years later after she was defeated by Ogre in battle. Devil branded the now teenage Jin with a mark on his left arm, possessing him, though remaining dormant. During the climax of the third King of Iron Fist Tournament, Jin was shot in the head by his grandfather, Heihachi Mishima. Healed by the Devil Gene within him, Jin resurrected as Devil Jin and made quick work of Heihachi and the Tekken Force guards that accompanied him.

Tekken 4[]

Jin goes through the tournament and is due to meet Kazuya Mishima in combat in the semi-finals. Before he can do so, he is attacked and abducted by Heihachi's Tekken Force. He awakens chained up in the family temple by Heihachi. Kazuya's Devil has completely possessed him and is trying to extract Jin's Devil from his body. Jin's devil tattoos appear in response to this and he breaks free of his bonds. Jin then struggles to keep his devil in check, and, after managing to do so, he defeats Kazuya and then Heihachi shortly after. Fueled by hatred for Heihachi, Jin partially transforms into Devil Jin, and draws back his fist to end Heihachi. He cannot land the finishing blow though, as he sees his mother's spirit, or a vision of her, reminding him of who he is. He drops Heihachi with a statement "Thank my mother, Jun Kazama" and flies away.

Tekken 5[]

Shortly after Jin left Hon-Maru, the temple was destroyed in an explosion. Jin's great-grandfather, Jinpachi Mishima, had been imprisoned underneath the temple for many years, kept alive only by a malevolent entity which had possessed him. Jinpachi was freed by the explosion, and his emergence had a dramatic effect on Devil Jin. Devil Jin was able to take total control of Jin's body, and leveled an entire forest. When Jin awoke in the destroyed forest, he had no memory of what had transpired, but knew it must have been the work of his devil form.

Jin retreated to his home, Yakushima, in search of peace, but was tormented by nightmares. He began to doubt his ability to keep a hold on Devil Jin.

He entered the fifth King of Iron Fist Tournament. During the tournament, he was matched against his rival, Hwoarang. Hwoarang was able to defeat Jin, but Devil Jin emerged in the wake of Jin's loss and savagely attacked Hwoarang, almost killing him. Jin went on to defeat Jinpachi in the tournament's final round and took control of the Mishima Zaibatsu.

Tekken 6[]

Jin began communicating telepathically with the Devil Gene's progenitor, Azazel, while he was leader of the Mishima Zaibatsu. He eventually confronted Azazel, and harnessed Devil Jin's power in an attempt to kill the demon, aiming to put an end to the Devil Gene once and for all. This attempt was unsuccessful, however, as part of Azazel's spirit survived. Jin remained afflicted with the Devil Gene.

Tekken 7[]

While Jin is unconscious and weakened from his fight against Azazel, UN peacekeepers strap him into a straitjacket and airlift him via helicopter from the desert. Jin's Devil Gene activates once again while in mid-flight, and Devil Jin obliterates the helicopter he's being carried in and falls into the sand below. Later, Jin walks through desert sandstorms and is cornered by more UN soldiers. He destroys his would-be captors with a laser beam that he unleashes into the sky. Eventually, Devil Jin was confronted by Hwoarang in a souq. This time, Hwoarang was able to defeat Devil Jin. Jin fled when the United Nations arrived on the scene.

Jin is later rescued by Lars Alexandersson and is brought, while comatose, to Lee Chaolan's Violet Systems. He awakens after Heihachi has been killed by Kazuya. As Lee and Lars remark that G Corporation seem intent on continuing the war, Jin joins them on a rooftop overlooking the conflict. Lars tells Jin that it is up to him to set straight everything that he has done wrong. Jin agrees, and says that, because of his devil blood, it is up to him to kill Kazuya. As he does so, he closes his fist, and his devil markings appear on his face.

Tekken 8[]

Jin fell into a comatose state for several months. Upon awakening, he appeared to have some ability to control his use of Devil Jin's powers and physical attributes, but continued to struggle not to be taken over by Devil Jin entirely. Jin confronted Kazuya in New York City and fought him using Devil Jin's power; however, Jin lost control during the fight and Devil Jin took over. Kazuya was able to defeat Devil Jin. Following his defeat, Jin had a vision of Devil Jin extending a hand to him, but he rejected its apparent offer of help.

Following the fight with Kazuya, Jin's capabilities diminished and he lost his ability to use Devil Jin's powers at all. Jin entered the eighth King of Iron Fist Tournament Asia Preliminaries regardless. Here, his powers briefly reactivated during a fight against a fighter called Reina, who was using Mishima Style Fighting Karate. This reactivation seemed to be motivated by the fear of death that Jin associated with that fighting style. After Reina forfeited the match, Hwoarang challenged Jin. During the fight, Jin experienced exhilaration that caused heat to build within him, and he was able to access some of Devil Jin's power without losing control, allowing him to win the fight. Following the fight, Hwoarang remarked that Jin’s powers were 'weird' but 'just another part of him'.

Jin later learned from Niklas Kliesen that devils were created by Azazel in ancient times to be its servants, and that people with the Devil Gene could access their powers by drawing upon their desires.

Later, Jin traveled to Yakushima in search of something that would allow him to defeat Kazuya. While there, he fell unconscious in a sanctum. He met Devil Jin on a plane of his subconscious. Devil Jin taunted him, telling him that power derived from anger and hatred was essential, and that Jin could atone for his past actions only through solitude. Jin rejected these ideas, stating that awareness of his past mistakes was what would allow him to move forwards. Jin then encountered Devil Jin as a mirror image of himself. Jin resolved that he was done rejecting Devil Jin as an innate part of himself, acknowledging that he could only move on if he accepted all he was and all he had done. Devil Jin asked him what it was he truly desired, and Jin stated that he was determined to protect those who were precious to him. Devil Jin granted Jin all of its power, and Jin realized that it had made efforts to protect him in the past. He thanked it, and apologized for misunderstanding it previously.

Jin took on a new devil form with one white wing, one black. In this form, he was able to use all of Devil Jin's power while retaining his own personality. He woke in time to save Lars Alexandersson from the path of one of Kazuya's lasers. Jin fought Kazuya in this new devil form and was able to hold his own against him. Eventually, however, he found himself struggling to hold back a massive attack that Kazuya intended to destroy Yakushima with. As he tried to hold the attack off, he had a vision of his mother, Jun Kazama. She reminded him that a Kazama's power was to foster life and cleanse evil, and Jin assumed a new form, Angel Jin. In this new form, he was able to purify both himself and his father of the Devil Gene using his new powers.

Other Media[]

Namco X Capcom[]

Devil Jin appeared in Namco X Capcom but without wings and horns, like in the original Tekken Tag Tournament.

Super Smash Bros.[]

Devil Jin appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a legendary class shield-type spirit, being the enhanced form of the Jin Kazama spirit. His ability grants the user the ability to do two midair jumps.

Powers and Abilities[]

Devil Jin is a powerful demon with supernatural powers and an awesome fighter with great strength that is a force to be reckon with.

Devil Jin's fighting style is an updated version of Jin's Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament style, thus switching back to a Mishima-style gameplay and retaining many of their signature moves.

Unlike most Mishimas, Devil Jin is well rounded and varied: while Heihachi excels in pressuring the opponent and Kazuya in performing heavy damaging punishers, Devil Jin is good with both, making him a powerful force. This doesn't mean that anyone who picks Devil Jin is instantly good, at all, as Devil Jin requires a certain amount of skill and practice, because most of his good moves and launchers are easy to see and heavily punishable, so incorrectly punishing the opponent can leave the player open to huge damage. In order to use him effectively, one must wait for the opponent to make a mistake, or using his great pressure tools and force him to make a mistake.

His laser attacks and flight should not be used carelessly, lest he be left wide open to punishment, but he actually does have techniques that utilize his flight and powers that are quick enough to use out of hand. Also, while his transition to a flight stance are not safe on block, he is actually hard to punish properly.

Fighting Style[]

Jin's fighting style in Tekken 3 mixes Mishima-style karate as well as Kazama-style traditional martial arts, before switching to traditional karate from Tekken 4 onwards. Devil Jin retains this old fighting style, along with some demonic abilities of his own.
