This act is the ultimate treason against our citizens. Our empire will not be tainted by monsters. It is high time our people found out the truth on this, the day of Angelise's baptism!
~ Julio, revealing that Ange is a Norma.

Julio Asuka Misurugi is the secondary antagonist of the anime series CROSS ANGE: Rondo of Angel and Dragon. He is the older brother of Angelise and Sylvia and the one who was responsible for revealing Ange's identity as a Norma. He’s also one of the arch-nemeses (alongside Lord Embryo) of Ange.

He was voiced by Kosuke Toriumi in the Japanese version, and by Blake Shepard in the English dubbed version.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Julio Asuka Misurugi was born into the royal family of the Misurugi Empire, around twenty years before the events of Cross Ange. He was the oldest child and only son of Emperor Jurai Asuka Misurugi and his wife, Empress Sophia Ikaruga Misurugi. Julio later became the older brother to Angelise Ikaruga Misurugi and Sylvia Ikaruga Misurugi. Very little is known about Julio's early life, but it appears that in his youth he genuinely loved and cared about both of his sisters, wanting to be close to them.

Unfortunately, this phase would not last, for like the majority of his people, Julio a mana-wielder. He was therefore genetically conditioned to dislike anybody that could not use the mystical energy source responsible for humanities peace and prosperity, i.e. the Norma. At some point in his youth, Julio either discovered or was made aware that his younger sister, Angelise, was in fact one such Norma. Like his parents, Julio originally did not think any differently of Angelise. He continued to love his sister and kept her status a secret from everybody, including the ignorant Angelise herself.

As he got older however, Julio's opinion of both his parents and his sister started to change. He began to interpret the radical measures that his parents had implemented to protect Angelise as a sign of favoritism. Later, Julio concluded that Jurai and Sophia were in fact grooming Angelise to take over the throne, an opinion that his sister appears to have shared. This angered Julio because, as the oldest child, he considered the throne his birthright.

In the long run Julio's affection and love for Angelise waned completely. They were eventually replaced by dislike and outright hatred. With his hatred for the Norma inflated, Julio became disgusted at being related to Angelise, whom he now considered to be an abomination and was furious that his parents had gone out of their way to protect her. For the time being though, Julio kept these observations and opinions to himself. On the outside, he continued to act like the obedient son and caring older brother. Behind the scenes, however, he, alongside his confidant/lover Riza, was secretly plotting Angelise's downfall, waiting for the perfect opportunity to destroy her.

Episode One: Angelise Exposed[]

Julio made his first appearance at the Iaria match between Ho-o Institute and Floria Academy. He is shown asking Momoka if his sister, whose sixteenth birthday is coming up is a burden, to which the maid is unconcerned. As part of the celebrations, Angelise is due to undergo a coronation event known as the Baptism Ceremony, which Julio notes he is looking forward too.

At the said event, Julio proceeded to betray both his parents and Angelise. With the event being broadcast all over the Mana-World, Julio had his aid, Riza restrain his father. The prince then revealed to all of the spectators that his sister was in fact a Norma, which was confirmed moments when Angelise shattered a Mana shield just by touching it, a typical trait of a Norma. Despite the best efforts of her mother, Angelise was eventually captured, stripped of all her titles and then exiled.

Julio did not seem to care about the fate of his mother Sophia, who was killed during the effort to capture his sister. For sheltering and harboring a Norma however, Emperor Jurai was subsequently arrested and striped of his authority. Julio later had his father executed, but would tell the unaware Sylvia that Ange had killed him. When Ange later returned to Misurugi however, Julio gloatingly told her in confidence about how he watched their father hang.

Following the death of his parents and the exile of his sister, Julio took control of the Misurugi Empire under the title of Emperor Julio the 1st.

Episodes 9-10: Ange's Escape[]

Despite having obtained the throne that he had always wanted, Julio Misurugi was still not satisfied. His sister Angelise, now named Ange still lived. Fully aware aware about the penal colony of Arzenal and the Norma's purpose in fighting the DRAGON's, Julio fully expected his sister to die and gleefully awaited the news of her death. Unfortunately for him, despite her initial denials, Ange swiftly adapted to her new situation. She turned out to be a natural soldier and with the help of a powerful Ragna-Mail, the Vilkiss, she managed to escape death on numerous occasions.

Eventually, Julio's patience ran out and he decided to eliminate Ange himself. To do this, he used his younger sister, Sylvia to lure Ange back to the mainland, by claiming that she was the one that had killed their parents. This turned Sylvia against Ange, and she became a willing accomplice in Julio's scheme. The plan worked and Ange walked straight into their trap. With another success under his belt, Julio came to personally collect his sister from prison, just so that he could, in his own words, watch her squirm.

He proceeded to put his sister on trial, which turned out be nothing more than a farce for torture. Julio smiled on gleefully, as Sylvia whipped her sister in front of an excited crowd. When the crowd began baying for Angelise's blood, Julio was more than willing to accommodate them. Throughout all of this, he held on to his mothers signate ring. Ange had managed to keep this, enabling her to pilot an extremely powerful Ragna-Mail known as the Vilkiss. Now though, it had been confiscated and given back to Julio. The Emperor of Misurugi also intended to kill Momoka, Ange's maid, for fleeing to Arzenal and remaining loyal to her mistress.

Now on the receiving end of the humans cruelty and prejudice, Ange renounced all ties to her former life. With her brother holding her life in his hands, Ange resolved to face her death with dignity. In a final act of defiance, she began to sing her mothers favorite song whilst ascending the scaffold. She ignored Julio's orders to shut up, only stopping when the noose was placed around her neck and ignored Julio's boast that the end had come.

Ange would not die that day, however, for she was saved at the last second by the intervention of Tusk, who also managed to steal back her signate ring. Teaming up with Momoka, Ange successfully drove away the surrounding guards, before mounting Tusk's transport. Before making her escape, the former Princess thanked her brother for helping her come to terms with her identity, before calling him and all of his subjects "beasts of a rotten world". As Ange fled, Julio leapt to his feet, shouting at the guards to get after her. This proved to be a costly mistake.

Hearing him, Ange in a final act of anger and vengeance lobbed her last remaining weapon, a four bladed shuriken at her brother. Julio managed to dodge a fatal strike, but before anybody could react or conjure a mana shield, one of the long blades slashed him across the left side of his face. As the weapon embedded itself in the throne, the Emperor of Misurugi fell screaming to his knees in front of the stunned onlookers. As Ange made her escape, Sylvia and the other attendees could do nothing by cry out in shock and horror, having witnessed their Emperor get humiliated by a Norma.

Julio's wound was subsequently healed, but a pronounced scar was left on his cheek. It is never stated whether or not this was done intentionally. Whatever the case, Julio became more determined than ever, to see Ange slaughtered.

Episodes 12-13: The Attack on Arzenal and Death[]

Julio later attended a meeting between Embryo and the various other leaders of the Mana-World. Here they discussed the danger posed to their citizens by the DRAGON's. They eventually decided to follow Embryo's suggestion that the world needed to be destroyed and remade. Seizing his opportunity, Julio personally volunteered to go to Arzenal and retrieve a number of valuable assets.

At the head of a large naval fleet, Julio approached Arzenal under the pretext of offering assistance following the massive DRAGON attack, which left Arzenal devastated. Commander Jill, saw through this deception however, and finally launched the Norma rebellion, codenamed Libertus. Seizing his opportunity, Julio deliberately defied Embryo's instructions. From the safety of his command vessel, the Emperor ordered his soldiers to land on Arzenal and exterminate any Norma that were not Angelise or Para-Mail riders.

As the battle raged on, both sides began to take heavy casualties. As the Mana-wielders continued to capture several Para-Mail riders, the remaining Norma fled to the safety of their subterranean levels, where Jill had a transport waiting. Meanwhile, Julio continued to search desperately for his sister, unaware that he would not have long to wait.

After learning that this act was being committed by her brother, Ange, in defiance of her orders, resolved to stop the invasion once and for all. Clambering onto the Vilkiss, she successfully launched her Ragna-Mail into the midst of the carnage. Fighting off all of the drones sent to capture her, Ange decimated the Mana-Wielders fleet, before turning her attention to the flagship. Using the Vilkiss' sword, she sliced open the bridge, killing the crew and coming face to face, with her treacherous brother.

Julio, who had just been lecturing his subordinates for their inability to capture one Para-Mail, cried out in horror upon finding himself face to face with the giant mecha. A second later, the canopy opened. Julio had just enough time to recognise his sister, before a bullet tore through his leg, leaving him injured and unable to flee. Using the situation to her advantage, Riza, who had accompanied Julio on the exhibition, abandoned her master and lover, without a moments hesitation and fled from the area.

Ignoring her, Ange kept her weapon trained on Julio, ordering him to call off the massacre and threatening to kill him if he did not comply. Fearing for his life, the Emperor did as instructed, much to the shock of his soldiers. Job done, he immediately ordered Ange to get him to a doctor. Ignoring him, Ange climbed back into the Vilkiss and raised the Ragna-Mail's sword threateningly overhead. For the second time in a fortnight, the two siblings found themselves in a situation where one (literally) held the others life in their hands. This time however, the positions were reversed and Ange held the advantage. Whereas his sister had been prepared to face her death with dignity and defiance however, Julio desperately pleaded for his life. In a cowardly bid to save his own skin, the Emperor "apologized" for everything, reminded Ange that they were family and even offered to reinstate her back into the Royal Family if she spared him.

Unfortunately for Julio, Ange did not believe him for one second. From inside the Vilkiss, the former Princess glared down at the man that had ruined her life out of petty spite and a selfish desire for power. Knowing full well that Julio had no intention of honoring any of this arrangement, she dismissed her brother, writing him off as worthless scum. No longer caring about the familial ties between them, Ange brought the sword down, aiming to kill the man who'd deliberately killed their parents, turned everybody she knew against her and tried to commit genocide upon the Norma.

Before the blade could connect however, a purple Ragna-Mail intervened, stopping the attack. This machine was the Hysterica and standing upon one of its shoulder was none other than Embryo himself. Seeing him, Julio proved Ange's assumptions to be true, by frantically calling out to the Master of Mankind, telling him to kill his sister. Ignoring his treacherous subordinate, Embryo focused all of his attention upon Ange. Declaring that she was beautiful, the creator of the Mana-World said that she did not deserve to waste her energy upon somebody beneath her. With that he offered to take care of the deed himself. Taking flight, Embryo started to sing a song. Ange, Julio, Tusk, Vivian and Riza all recognized the tune as the Endless Song.

Realizing what was about to happen, Ange and Tusk turned their machines about, whilst Riza (who was already a safe distance away) watched on in horror. Injured and with nowhere to go, Julio could only watch on helplessly as the Master of Mankind punished him for overstepping his mark. Finishing the song, Embryo unleashed a devastating attack, with Julio's ship as the focal point. Ange, Tusk, Vivian, Riza and the surviving Norma were all spared. Caught at the epicenter, Julio and his surviving forces, were not so fortunate. Surrounded by a blinding light, Emperor Julio Misurugi the First, finally discovered for himself what betrayal felt like. With a final scream of horror, he perished at the hands of his creator. His body, ship and surrounding fleet were all vaporized, leaving behind no trace of their existence.

Legacy[]

Julio's death led to another power exchange within the Misurugi Empire. Since Ange was in exile and Jurai and Sophia were both dead, Sylvia automatically became the new Empress. Embryo awoke her from her endless sleep induced by Riza, before personally taking control of the nation, since Sylvia was both too young and dependent upon others to lead the Empire. Apart from the puppet Empress however, nobody seemed especially concerned or even aware that their Emperor was deceased.

Ange herself, was in two minds when it came to her now dead brother. When she and Tusk later talked about all the strange things that Ange has been through and everything she learned and the people she met, she brought up Julio, claiming. Somewhat remorsefully, she claimed that she was "unable to understand him, until the end". This does not mean that she felt sympathy for her brother however. On the contrary, when Ange later confronted Embryo, she stated all the reasons why she despised him. One of these was the fact that Embryo had killed Julio, thus denying Ange both vengeance and closure.

Sylvia meanwhile, believed that Ange had been the one that killed Julio. This caused her to hate her sister even more, as she now believed her to be responsible for the deaths of every other person in their family. However, Riza (who had been captured but was later freed by Momoka) later told the young Empress the truth. Before escaping, she informed Sylvia that Embryo had been the one that killed Julio and that Julio in fact been the one that killed her father. This, coupled with Embryo's subsequent betrayal caused Sylvia to realize that she had been completely wrong. Following Embryo's death, Sylvia began to rally the survivors of the world merger, emulating her sister rather than her deceptive brother.
