Buffy vs dracula

Dracula with Buffy Summers

Dracula was one of the most powerful vampires in the Buffy Universe and was based on the legendary Count Dracula from Bram Stoker's novel. However, unlike many vampires in the series, he was neither fully good nor evil, and was seen as being much more of a charming rogue than a bestial monster (though he was still dangerous). Seeing as he claimed to have risked his soul for his powers, it is possible he, like Angel and Spike, still retains it.

Dracula was disliked by some vampires (such as Spike) because of his fame and his tendency to display needless theatrical magic (which he was rumored to have learned from the Gypsies). Using this magic, Dracula was able to accomplish a few feats that the Hellmouth vampires could not: turn into a wolf, summon mist and (most famously of all) revive after being staked.

Dracula also seemed to have the ability to alter reality itself, as he managed to form a castle for himself when he arrived in Sunnydale. Like the vampire of legend, he was also tended to by several female servants (which were based on the brides found in the book).

Compared to the Hellmouth vampires in the Buffyverse, Dracula is an exceptional vampire, having powers they do not have (which are associated with his depictions in Hollywood film). He can transform into a bat, a swarm of bats, wolf, panther, swarm of bees, or a cloud of mist. He can manipulate the weather, causing storms. Most notoriously, he can hypnotize mortals, making them his "thralls". (It is implied he did this to Joyce Summers in order to convince her to let him into her house, thus giving him free reign of the home and allowing him to bite Buffy while she's in her bed later.) Being staked with a wooden stake doesn't kill him; although doing so reduces his body to dust as is the case for a typical Hellmouth vampire, he reforms after a few minutes. Supposedly, he can only be truly killed if he is beheaded and his head and body are then burned separately.

While Spike claims Dracula's powers are nothing but "showy Gypsy stuff," Dracula himself says they were part of "the ancient magics" which he gambled his actual soul in order to achieve.

Another way Dracula is also different compared to the Hellmouth vampires is his ability to make his fangs become visible and thus feed on a victim without taking on the "game face" of the Hellmouth vampires with the ridged forehead and the yellow eyes (which the Hellmouth vampire usually does when about to feed or is placed in a stressful situation such as fighting).

Trivia[]

  • Dracula was played by Rudolf Martin, who Sarah Michelle Gellar knew from when they both starred on All My Children, where their characters were once married.
  • The writers came up with the idea of using Dracula because Marti Noxon wanted a villain who was "just another vampire who rode a horse and was all cool", similar to Dracula. Joss Whedon suggested using Dracula himself, as he was public domain.
