Ha Ha Ha! Too late, Nukem. We're in control, now!
~ The Battlelord

The Battlelord is a recurring antagonist in the Duke Nukem franchise, first appearing in Duke Nukem 3D and making a comeback in Duke Nukem Forever.

Appearance[]

In Duke Nukem 3D, the Battlelord is a gigantic bipedal reptiloid alien with red eyes and long, sharp teeth protruding from its mouth. It wears reinforced plates with spikes on its shoulders and back, as well as a helmet, but otherwise lack much in clothes (besides a cover for his genitals) and walks barefoot. It's worth noting that the Battlelord's skin color, as well as the color of his weapons and spikes, can be altered by swapping his color palette in the Build engine, which is often used in user maps.

In Duke Nukem Forever, the Battlelord's appearance has been slightly revamped. His teeth are less prominent, but his horns are now bigger and has to be removed to defeat him. His eyes are also no longer red.

Biography[]

Duke Nukem 3D[]

The Battlelord is the main antagonist of Episode 1: L.A. Meltdown, serving as the commander of the first alien fleet, who downed Duke's aircraft and invaded Los Angeles. He first appears in the second stage as a hologram, when Duke gets caught by the Pig cops and sent to the nearest death row. Duke however manages to escape and eventually finds the Battlelord in his spaceship, who was waiting for his arrival. The Battlelord will use his minigun to deal damage at close to mid-ranges, and throw mortars if the player is getting away; he can also stomp on Duke if he gets too close. After he's defeated, he will ask Duke "Who are you", before Duke blows his brain out with his shotgun and then heads to the Moon to defeat the Overlord.

In later episodes, smaller clones of the Battlelord will serve as recurring mini-bosses. They have much less health than the original Battlelord, but they deal the same damages, and should not be taken lightly.

In the fifth episode, two original-sized Battlelord will appear as bosses, one in Tour de Nukem and the other in Prima Arena. They are the same as the original, but killing them will not end the level.

Duke Nukem Forever[]

In Duke Nukem Forever, one Battlelord will crush a group of EDF soldiers underfoot, before taking on Duke. He uses a more varied pattern of attacks compared to the old Battlelord, and can even throw cars at the player, making him more dangerous. Another one will guard the Hoover Dam. Both are defeated and brutally killed after a lengthy battle with the Duke.

Trivia[]

  • The Battlelord's roar in Duke Nukem 3D is taken from the T-Rex's roar from The Land Unknown (1957).
  • The Battlelord is the only enemy of Duke Nukem 3D who functions as a final boss and is later reused as a mini-boss (in Alien World Order).
