As you may already know, my real master is Velzar, King of the Abyss, who resides in the Underworld. I stood with Vearn on orders from Master Velzar. While I pretended to help the Dark King, I was commanded to kill him using the Core in this puppet should the opportunity arise. Master Velzar also wants the Surface World, unlike the Dark King.
~ Killvearn elaborating his master Velzar's longterm contingency plan to the Surface World Heroes.

Velzar, also known as the King of the Abyss, is the overarching antagonist in the Dragon Quest spinoff manga Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. He is an incredibly powerful evil dragon rival to the Dark King Vearn and once the archenemy to the Dragon Knight Baran. He never appears yet he is often mentioned and still influences the plot through his right-hand man, the Reaper Killvearn.

In the 2020 anime, he was voiced by Ryūsei Nakao, who also voiced Frieza and Cooler in Dragon Ball, Agent Abrella in Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger, Mayuri Kurotsuchi in Bleach, Caesar Clown in One Piece, and Nana in Magical Girl Site.

Characteristics[]

When Hadlar laid waste to the world, the Dragon Knight did not appear. It was a human Hero who defeated Hadlar. (...) At the time, Master Baran was fighting a greater threat. For it is a Dragon Knight's duty to punish those who disrupt the world's balance. Compared to the threat of Velzar, King of the Abyss, who was the last intelligent Dragon seeking to conquer this world, even Hadlar was trivial enough to be ignored.
~ Larhalt emphasizing the threat of Velzar, when compared to Hadlar.

Little is known about Velzar, except that he is the most ancient and powerful of the remaining dragons, and the last intelligent one, who has lived for eons. He rivals the Dragon God himself, with whom he might be related in some ways; just like Vearn with the Demon God.

Velzar is a titanic fire-breathing dragon with frightening dark powers, who fights by combining his Dark Aura (Life force stemming from his evil nature) and his flaming breath. He is just as powerful as Vearn himself, though Vearn most likely surpasses him when he assumes his mightiest forms. His soul is apparently immortal, enabling him to resurrect when his body is destroyed.

In addition, when the Dark Lord Hadlar was laying waste to the Surface World, the divine protector of the world, the Dragon Knight Baran ignored him as the threat of the Abyss Dragon King and his forces was far greater than Hadlars ever could have been.

Personality[]

My master is very greedy, very unlike a dragon. More like a human.
~ Killvearn on his master, Velzar.

Velzar is cruel, ruthless, greedy, power-hungry, hateful, resentful, violent, and irascible. He did not hesitate to nuke an entire continent of his realm, with its entire population, to serve his own selfish interest.

He hates being bested or taunted, and tends to quite hypocritically disparage Vearn’s foes, while he in fact cannot deny their worth. Still, even though he dislikes it, he gives credit when it is due. He loathes the gods and their servants and despises Vearn, but he still genuinely, albeit begrudgingly, praises the Dark King should he succeed. Very much like his oldest rival, Velzar always respects all those who are strong, for example despite their animosity, he greatly respected his old nemesis Baran for being able to vanquish him.

Like Vearn, Velzar intensely resents the gods and plans to wipe out all life on the Surface World, in order to claim it for his kind but mainly for himself. However, unlike Vearn who plans to obliterate the surface, Velzar covets it to rule it forever.

Biography[]

Background[]

We were originally enemies in the Underworld. But we share the same hatred. We despise the gods! They tossed us aside and gave only the humans of the Surface World peace. Their injustice is unforgivable! The only choice was for one of us to become a god! So we ended our opposition. That was some centuries ago. That's when I suggested a little bet. We would go ahead with our own schemes, and whoever lost would serve the winner. Of course, as you can see from how Velzar sent Kill to me, neither of us ever fully trusted the other. Even after Velzar fell and was bound, Kill continued watching me. Even in that state, Velzar never gave up on the Surface World.

VelzarRealm

Velzar's territory in the Underworld.

In the Dawn of Time, the God of Humans, the God of Dragons and the God of Darklings shared the world between their respective races, placing the Darlings and most Dragons in the Underworld, often called Nadiria in the Dragon Quest franchise: the subterranean, chaotic inferno where might is the only rule. Velzar and his ancient nemesis, Vearn the Dark King had split the Underworld, as they both ruled two different parts of their dark realm.

Vearn recalling the "duel of the true dragons".

As millennia went by, the dragon race that was once highly intelligent and gifted in magic, ended up reduced to violent, mindless beasts, still feared as the mightiest monsters in the world, but now a shadow of their former glory. The reason of such downfall is not explained.

Velzar rose to power until the fated day he fought his most hated rival, the equally powerful Lightning Dragon Vorikus, for full dominion over the dragon kind. The sheer might emitted in this apocalyptic battle leveled everything for miles around. It was remembered across the Underworld as the "duel of the true dragon". From his victory, he became known as the Abyss Dragon King, the supreme ruler over all his kind.

Velzar's Black Core (inside his "Reaper Kill") that was intended for Vearn.

Velzar fought against Vearn for millennia for the control of the Underworld and the Surface, until Vearn came up with a wager about who would take over both first, with the loser submitting to his rival. They built up their domains in the Underworld and raised their forces.

At some point in the past, Velzar sent his most powerful follower, the Reaper known as Killvearn, to serve Vearn as a "truce gift". As his name implies, his real purpose was to kill Vearn with a Black Core, (a magical explosive as destructive as a modern nuclear bomb) should the opportunity arise. Vearn immediately figured this out and while Killvearn kept serving his true lord all along, he also became one of Vearn's most trusted and dangerous agents.

Defeat against Baran[]

Velther vs

Velzar fighting Baran in the 2020 anime.

About fifteen years before the story, Vearn and Velzar made their move. While Vearn waited for the outcome of the war opposing the Great Hero Avan’s and the Dark Lord Hadlar, Velzar became hasty and launched his attack. Knowing full well Vearn planned for the Surface World's destruction, he sped up his plan on conquering it. But before he and his forces could arrive at the Surface World, they were halted by the confrontation of the divine protector of the world, the Dragon Knight Baran. In the ensuing struggle, Velzar nuked a continent of the Underworld with a Black Core in an effort to slay Baran, but to no avail, and was slain after a long and gruesome battle that shook the entire Underworld.

Immediately afterwards, divine spirits from the Heavens, often called Zenithia in the Dragon Quest franchise and Celesta in the anime, sealed his soul into a stone statue which they imprisoned inside a temple in the Underworld, forever preventing his resurrection. Yet, this did not stop his ambitions as he still wanted to conquer the Surface World and eliminate Vearn, and so his will continued on through his servant Killvearn.

Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai[]

Actually, I have no choice but to admit defeat. You defeated the current Dragon Knight and seek to acquire even the sun as your own. You truly are a terrifying man, Dark King Vearn.
~ Velzar reluctantly congratulates his ancient nemesis, Vearn on his "seeming" victory.
VelzarCongratulatesVearn

Velzar admits defeats and congratulates Vearn on his seeming victory.

Velzar is mentioned in many flashbacks about Baran's and Killvearn's origins. He appears for the first time in person when manifesting a projection of himself in Vearn’s palace, during the final battle between Vearn and the heroes.

Since Vearn (seemingly) got rid of all obstacles between him and his goal to obliterate the Surface World, Velzar reluctantly congratulates his ancient rival, who explains the extent of their conflict to the heroes, while gloating about the fact that all who stood in his way, from his ancient nemesis to the obstacle created by the gods, are at long last groveling at his feet.

Vearn mockingly offers to attack Heavens and gain Velzar's freedom after the Surface World is no more, prompting the offended King of the Abyss to leave in a huff. Before leaving, he gazed upon the son of his old nemesis, Dai and mocked him for not even being half the man Baran was, prompting Vearn to call him off for Dai was undeniably superior in every way, all he lacked was Baran's unrivalled bloodlust.

In the last stage of the final battle, after Dai unleashed his full might, Velzar sensed his old rival tapping into his most powerful form, the "Sovereign Supreme", expressing disbelief that the son of the Dragon Knight was powerful enough to push Vearn this far.

Aftermath[]

Velzar's ambitions were put to a final end, with his right-hand Kill's death.

However, after Vearn's death at the hand of the hero Dai, Killvearn resurfaces and attempts to detonate the Black Core set by Vearn, to kill everyone on the Surface and claim it in Velzar's name. Fortunately, the heroes kill him and thwart his attempt, leaving Velzar sealed and helpless forever, ending every threat once and for all and securing a durable peace on the entire Surface world.

Trivia[]

  • Originally, after Vearn was defeated, Velzar was meant to become the main villain of the series. However, this plan was soon discontinued due to the author believing that Vearn' s defeat was a natural end point for the manga and because of the artist's illness.
