Sachiel is a major antagonist in the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise.

It appeares in the first episode of the original television anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, as well as in Volume 1 of the manga adaptation of the series made by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. It is also the first antagonist to make an appearance in the first installment of the animated film tetralogy known as Rebuild of Evangelion, Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone.

Biography

The third identified member of entities known as the Angels, Sachiel was the first to appear and attack Tokyo-III fifteen years after the events of Second Impact. After conventional weapons proved to be ineffective against its hide, JSSDF detonated an N² Mine in a desperate attempt to destroy the Angel. However, they only succeeded at melting 18% of its mass, which forced Sachiel to enter regeneration state, during which the Angel developed another face and ability to create cruciform explosions.

Hours later, Sachiel eventually reached Tokyo-III where the Seed of Life known as Lilith was imprisoned. Just as the Angel was about to drill a hole inside of GeoFront, Evangelion Unit-01 was deployed to stop it. Due to Shinji Ikari's inexperience, Sachiel easily defeated Unit-01 by breaking its arm and impaling its skull. However, Unit-01 was taken over by Yui Ikari's consciousness, allowing her to overpower Sachiel and nearly kill it. The fight ends as the Third Angel wraps around Unit-01 and collapses its core, initiating a self-destruct sequence that destroys its body and a surrounding portion of the city.

Personality

Due to it mostly focusing on searching for Lilith the second Angel within GeoFront, Sachiel doesn't show much form of behavior or other kind of personality like the majority of the Angels in the franchise. It didn't even take JSSDF forces seriously as it mostly used its AT Field as a means to both deflect their attacks and left them wasting their ammunition. The only known occasions where it actively attacks others are when it speared one of their planes and destroyed another whom observed it having its second face grows after being attacked by N2 bomb.

Like all Angels, when it faced a lifeform that had the same essence as them, but is not Lilith (namely Evangelions), Sachiel would engage them in a more serious manner. Sachiel was obviously overestimating Evangelion Unit 01 (whom at that time was controlled by Shinji for the first time) as it ended up falling flat and used this opportunity to break its left arm and speared the Evangelion's right eye on a building. But once the Eva went berserk and started fighting back more fiercely, Sachiel became agitated enough to go as far as projecting its AT Field with maximum density to the point it became visible to deflect the rampaging Eva's attack and when it finally became helpless, it resorts to self destructing near the Eva, though the attempt was futile.

Physical Appearance

Sachiel is a spindly, amphibious humanoid Angel around the same size as the Evangelion Unit with several exposed bones, a skeletal silhouette, elongated arms, three-clawed hands, broad shoulders, straight legs, an avian skull-like face and a red orb located at the center of its solar plexus. It also sports a gills on its thighs and nostrils on crotch, both which serve as an underwater propulsion system. As its main weapon, Sachiel has retractable lances growing from its elbows, which glow purple whenever the creature uses them in offensive manner. Its blood is blue, while its irises are red.

Powers and Abilities

• Angel physiology: Sachiel belongs to a race of Angels, beings born from Adam and possess a unique set of individual supernatural powers. In Sachiel's case, those powers include:
  • Advanced strength: Sachiel displays immense amounts of physical strength. Examples include: knocking VTOL crafts out of the sky, crushing a ballistic missile in one arm, lifting Evangelion Unit-01 by the head and breaking her arms. In the manga, Sachiel easily overpowered Unit-01 piloted by Rei Ayanami and sent her crashing into a nearby building with a drop-kick.
  • Advanced durability: Like stereotypical giant monsters, Sachiel is completely impervious to conventional weaponry; tanks, missiles and bombs explode harmlessly against its skin, with only an N² Mine being powerful enough to cause any physical damage to it. Even then, only 18% of its mass was lost which healed over the course of moments. Later, Sachiel was left unharmed by being sent crashing by Evangelion Unit-01 into the building, while its core survived a few blows from Berserk Unit-01, even when it was striking it with its own ribs.
  • Advanced leaping: By manifesting a halo above its upper half of the body, Sachiel can leap high and far into air.
  • AT field: Like nearly all of its kind, Sachiel can manifest a nigh-impenetrable force field made purely of its soul. Although its rather average compared to the rest of the Angels, Sachiel's AT Field is still durable enough to withstand assault from JSSDF's forces, as well as stop charging Berserk Unit-01 dead in its tracks. However, when the latter used its own AT Field to negate Sachiel's AT Field, Unit-01 was able to physically grab into it and rip the AT Field apart.
  • Regenerative Adaptation: Sachiel is capable of regenerating from massive physical damage in a matter of hours while also being able to adapt its own body to counter dangers. Those adaptations include:
    • Energy Projection: After developing a second face, Sachiel developed the ability to fire destructive long-range energy blasts from its eyes, which created cross-shaped pillars of light upon touching the ground. Whenever Sachiel was about to use this ability, a brief flash of light appeared in its eyes accompanied with a high-pitched sound. Said beams had a potential to destroy a GeoFront with only 4 strikes, although they were incapable of harming Unit-01 at almost point-blank range.
    • Muscle Mass Manipulation: In the anime and Rebuild of Evangelion, Sachiel could temporarily enlarge his arm muscles to the point it could crush ballistic missile and break Unit-01's arm. The Third Angel lacks this ability in the manga.
  • Expert Swimmer: As shown in the prologue sequence, Sachiel can swim underwater by propelling its massive body using its underwater propulsion system.
  • Regenerative Healing Factor: Sachiel can enter a healing process in which all injuries done to it heal within a few moments. In this state, Sachiel has regenerated approximately 18% of its lost biomass.
  • Retractable Lances: Sachiel possesses long, sharp bone lances, which seem to be made of Angel's ulna or outer arm bone. Aside from impaling objects, Sachiel can charge those lances with energy to minimize their destructive potential. The creature is seen using them twice: the first time on VTOL craft, and the second time on Unit-01's left eye.
  • Self-Destruction: As its last resort technique, Sachiel can wrap itself into a ball and collapse its core, resulting in a massive explosion that obliterates the nearby area. In Rebuild of Evangelion, this also causes an immense amounts of LCL rain. Although this technique instantly kills the Angel, beings of comparable durability like Unit-01 were shown to be unaffected by the explosion.
  • Self-Sustenance: Sachiel is equipped with an S² Engine, which grants it infinite amounts of internal energy and prevents it from starving to death, dying of exhaustion or oxygen deprivation.

Trivia

• The "ch" in "Sachiel" is pronounced as a hard "K".
• Sachiel is one of the few Angels to appear in more than one episode. It also makes a brief cameo reappearance as a holographic shooting target in Episode 03's training simulation.
• Sachiel is named after a cherub and resident of the First Heaven. This angel is supposedly invoked from the south, possibly referenced in Sachiel's path towards Tokyo-3.
• Sachiel's energy explosions blatantly resemble a Latin cross. One cross-explosion penetrates the GeoFront, but how is unknown: Sachiel's blasts are supposedly weaker than the similar explosions Zeruel sets off, at the very least incapable of damaging Unit-01. How the blasts are formed is unexplained.
