Shelly (in Japanese: イズミ, Izumi) is one of the Team Aqua's admins and a major antagonist within the Hoenn Pokémon games (Pokémon Ruby/Pokémon Sapphire/Pokémon Emerald and their remakes, Pokémon Omega Ruby/Pokémon Alpha Sapphire). She is the female counterpart of Matt and the Aqua counterpart of Courtney.

In Japanese, she was voiced by Shōko Tsuda in the anime and Takako Honda in Pokémon Generations. In English, she was voiced by Erica Schroeder in the anime and Cristina Valenzuela/Cristina Vee in Pokémon Generations.

Biography[]

Games[]

In the original games, Shelly is first fought in the Weather Institute when she attempts to steal a Castform. She is then faced off again in the Seafloor Cavern. In Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, however, she gets an additional fight (which serves as her first in that game) in Meteor Falls in a double battle with a random male Aqua Grunt serving as her partner. Her second fight also takes place on Mt. Chimney rather than in the Seafloor Cavern.

In the remakes, she not only gets a rather drastic redesign, but also a different personality. At first, she is cocky and evil similar to how she was in the original games. In the Seafloor Cavern, she (reluctantly) compliments the player on their skills after she is defeated, but berates them from stopping Archie's vision of a perfect world. In the Weather Institute, she is conflicted whether it is worth it to help Archie pursue his insane goals of flooding the earth: she battles the player mostly because she needs to take her mind off of her conflicted feelings. Realizing the horrors that Primal Kyogre's powers could cause, she attempts to stop Archie from awakening the beast but fails. After this, Archie is horrified of his own actions as well, and Shelly ends up taking charge of fixing Team Aqua's mistakes, even giving the player a specialized diving suit so that they can travel and battle with Kyogre.

Pokémon Masters[]

While first appearing in a cameo role in the Masters of Land and Sea event, Shelly makes their first full appearance in Pokémon Masters in the Hoenn-themed chapter of the second arc of of the main story, with Archie and his admins standing before the team's grunts. Matt makes the suggestion to his peers on the idea of using Kyogre to destroy their rivals, to which Shelley vetoes due to it being too dangerous. This is something Archie shows agreement to, noting of Team Aqua's true goal of making the world a paradise for Pokémon.

Despite this action not going through, the members of Team Magma and Team Aqua still find and battle each other in a nearby town, causing Brendan, May, and Wally to go investigate. This duel eventually subsides in a draw, as the leaders of both group lose interest in their unsatisfactory brawl. Even Groudon and Kyogre demanding they fight is broken up by the arrival of Rayquaza, which causes the two to flee. Due to this, the leaders of both teams decide to make the plans of finding their lost legendarys. While this goes on, Zinnia goes with Archie and Shelly to their base to warn them of the ongoing manipulation by Team Rocket, something they are first skeptical to, but later take interest in. This fear comes to reality when Matt comes possessed by dark energy and is made to attack grunts of Team Magma in a rage, requiring Brendan to step in and fight him off.

Faced with the challenge of the admins wielding legendary Pokémon and their vicious trance, the remaining members of each team work together in order to defeat Groudon and Kyogre, using the ability of reasoning to stop their assault. However, the rampaging legends (and in turn, the berserk state Courtney was is) was stopped through Steven and Zinnia using their combined powers to destroy an incoming meteor and a device Team Rocket used to make the Pokémon become uncontrollable. After learning of Team Rocket's involvement in the incident, the two rival teams decide to call a truce, putting their rivalry to the side in order to protect Pasio.

Pokémon Adventures[]

Shelly, referred to as Angie in the Chuang Yi translation, is an antagonist in the Pokémon Adventures manga. She first appeared in Rustboro City, where she, along with her fellow SSS admins Matt and Amber ran off with the Devon Goods before being caught by Sapphire.

She is in charge of liaison duties within Team Aqua, and as such kept in close contact with Professor Cozmo before turning on him when they felt he was no longer of use to them.

She later kept the Hoenn Gym Leaders who'd chosen to fight off Team Aqua at bay with Matt and Amber.

A second Shelly (based off the remake's design) was later seen as part of Team Aqua in the Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire chapter.

Trivia[]

  • Because of her redesign, Pokemon Adventures treated the newer design as a separate character for the Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire chapter, identifying Shelly as more of a code name than an actual name.
