Nao is the deuteragonist of the Junji Ito story The Bully from the 12th volume of his Horror World series.
Nao was once a classmate of the schoolgirl Kuriko, who had often picked on and bullied him. Years later, the two of them get married, and have a boy named Hiroshi. If Kuriko’s theory presented in the story is correct, then he is indirectly responsible for his wife abusing Hiroshi by abandoning them, although it is left up to the reader to decide if this is actually the case.
The Bully[]
As a child, he moved into a suburban neighborhood with his parents and is introduced to a girl named Kuriko at the playground. Ecstatic, he decided to play with her only for her to bully him on a daily basis as he was clingy and prevented her from being with her crush, Yutaro, he and his family finally moved out after she nearly killed him whilst bullying him after leading him to an aggressive dog which severely mauled him.
As he grew older, he developed a deep hatred for her and wished to seek vengeance against her in the most hurtful way possible.
Years later, Nao is who now a handsome, young adult finds the adult Kuriko who expressed regret and remorse for her actions. He bonded with her, convinced her to leave her boyfriend Yutaro and eventually marries her in a small private wedding.
However Nao disappeared after their son, Hiroshi is born. Yuriko initially thought he was kidnapped or fell of a cliff, but later surmised it was revenge for bullying him in the past. As a result, four years afterwards Kuriko started abusing Hiroshi and calls him Nao as a surrogate.

- Nao is only a villain if Kuriko's theory is true; as Kuriko is an unreliable narrator, it is perfectly possible that he did indeed happen to disappear through non-malicious means, with Kuriko's reasoning on the matter being nothing more than another aspect of her growing delusions.
- If Kuriko's theory is true, Nao likely arranged a private wedding with just him and Kuriko, because it would mean few would believe her that she had a baby with her husband and would instead think she had her child out of wedlock.
- In Japan's conservative society at the time, having a child out of wedlock and being a single mother were often considered points of shame.
