Lord Matsudaira Naritsugu is the main antagonist of the 1963 Japanese samurai action film 13 Assassins and its 2010 remake of the same name. He is a sadistic young lord who rapes and kills at will, including the daughter in law of his half brother and the daughter of a present leader.

He was portrayed by the late Kantarō Suga in the original and by Goro Inagaki in the remake.

Biography[]

The lord of the Akashi Clan, he is reportedly so evil that a member of his clan named Mamiya committed hara-kiri to protest against him. But Lord Matsudaira Naritsugu suffers no consequence because he is the Shogun's half-brother and has a position of government.

His first scene is in a flashback where he brutally grabs a woman named Chise having come to greet him in Kiso, a city where he stayed for the night, take her in an isolated room, and rape her. Her husband, Makino Uneme, finds them later. Having visibly pleasure to see the man’s horror, Lord Naritsugu taunts him by calling her a “mountain monkey” because she scratched him when she forced himself on her. Uneme kneels beside his wife. The lord immediately draws his sword, pierces the husband, and continues to hit his dead corpse. Distraught, Chise committed suicide.

It is also mentioned that Akashi’ lands were fertile before the evil lord’s ruling. Naritsugu imposed heavy taxes on peasants, causing starvation among them. Therefore, they decided to revolt. Unfortunately, the rebellion was crushed and the daughter of the peasants’ leader was taken by Naritsugu as a sex slave after he slaughtered her whole family. He brought her to Edo, cuts off her arms, legs, and tongue, and finally throw her away in Edo’ streets when he got bored.

To punish Mamiya posthumously for his suicide, Naritsugu has his whole family tied up in the banquet hall to serve as target practices. His right-hand Hanbei protests because there is governmental orders requesting him to leave the family alone, but Naritsugu disregards these, claiming he only does his duty as a master who punishes his servants who revolt against him all the while finishing off the family. He also announces his intent to be member of the Shogun’s council and the chief of his staff.

Wanting to attack Lord Naritsugu before he reaches Akashi, as he will be untouchable there, Shinzaemon makes a deal with Makino Yukie, Makino Uneme's father, to forcibly alter Naritsugu's itinerary. The mourning father thus blocks the villainous lord's entry to his village. Insulted, Naritsugu orders him to get out of his way, or he'll kill him without mercy. Yukie reveals who he is. Naritsugu taunts him by asking if “father monkeys have hard bones” and draws his sword to kill him. Before a fight could happen, Yukie’s samurais puts themselves in front of him to protect their boss. Hanbei intervenes and strongly advises Naritsugu to reach Akashi by passing by another way to not provoke a diplomatic incident. The lord reluctantly accepts and suggests to Hanbei to defend him the next time something similar happens.

During his journey, he is opposed by Shinzaemon, eleven other samurai, and a bandit who were hired to kill him for those who despised his methods. Naritsugu sees the battle between the samurai and his men as beautiful and is enraptured. After his men and most of the samurai are killed he enters the battle and wounds one of the surviving samurais only to get stabbed himself. He then confesses to being scared of his own death and is decapitated. His death was reported as an illness.
