Villain Overview

This seems like a good time for a drink and a cold, calculated speech with sinister overtones. A speech about politics. About order. Brotherhood. Power! But speeches are for campaigning. Now. Is the time for action!
~ Evil Morty's famous speech after becoming President of the Citadel of Ricks.
Do you know what the Central Finite Curve is? They built a wall around infinity. They separated all the infinite universes from all the infinite universes where he's the smartest man in the universe. Every version of us has spent every version of all of our lives in one infinite crib built around an infinite f*cking baby. And I'm leaving it. That's what makes me "evil" — being sick of him. If you've ever been sick of him, you've been evil, too.
~ Evil Morty revealing his goals to finally escape the toxic influence of Ricks.
There you go, kid. Now, you're "Evil Morty" too. Sooner or later we all are, on this side of the Curve...
~ Evil Morty to Morty Smith after the latter discovers that Rick Sanchez returned to their family for disingenuous reasons.

Mortimer Chauncey Smith of Dimension 79⊢⊇V, better known by his nickname Evil Morty, is the main antagonist of the Adult Swim animated Sitcom TV series Rick and Morty.

He is a malicious alternate version and archenemy of Morty Smith, the master of Evil Rick, and the one truly responsible for the deaths of Ricks and abductions of Mortys from other different universes. He managed to escape capture and be elected first President of the Citadel of Ricks following the destruction of the public Council of Ricks. Embittered by every Rick's horrible and toxic behavior, as well as their treatment of all Mortys, he is intent to break through the Central Finite Curve to escape to a reality where Rick is not the smartest man in existence.

He was voiced by the series' co-creator Justin Roiland, who also voiced every single version of Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith until season 7. From season 7 onwards, he is voiced by Harry Belden.

Appearance[]

Evil Morty has the same appearance as most other Mortys with a yellow shirt, dark blue pants, black shoes and short brown hair but sporting an eyepatch and with black socks. He removed it after Evil Rick was killed and later wore a regular dark gray colored suit and belt with a red tie; when removing his eye-patch this exposed wiring poking out from under his eye which he promptly pushed back in.

Personality[]

Evil Morty, as his name suggests, is a selfish, cruel, manipulative, cunning, ruthless, cold-hearted, and sociopathic mastermind who is willing to do whatever it takes to get what he wants and accomplish his goals, even if it means torturing many versions of himself or murdering thousands of them, especially the Ricks in the most brutal and painful ways imaginable.

Like Rick, Evil Morty is incredibly intelligent—arguably just as if not more so than Rick himself. He was able to successfully win an election by winning over thousands with his charisma and inspiring speeches. He also displays incredible expertise in technology as he was able to implant cybernetics into his Rick's corpse and animate his body, making him appear to be the mastermind behind the abduction of hundreds of Mortys when in reality it was him all along—not to mention he was able to successfully break through and escape the Central Finite Curve.

He holds an incredibly deep hatred for Ricks due to their selfish, sociopathic and reckless behavior. His main goal revolved around escaping to a reality where Rick isn't the smartest in the universe by breaking the Central Finite Curve, and he was willing to do whatever it took to accomplish just that. Despite expressing mild sympathy for other Mortys, Evil Morty is fully willing to manipulate, torture, or kill countless of them to further his plans. In fact, he fuels the new Dimensional Drive protocol, in part, with the blood of Mortys and Ricks. He also appears to hate other Mortys because he views them as mere subservient puppets to Ricks as the Mortys will stay by their side no matter the horrible actions they commit. He even states because of the meek and cowardly nature the Mortys have, he hates them even more than the Ricks they sell out to.

During his campaign to become president of the Citadel of Ricks, Evil Morty presented himself as a suave, charismatic, compassionate politician. He also managed to win the election and by tackling the division between the Ricks and Mortys as well as the Ricks at the top of the hierarchy who liked the Citadel divided. However, once he wins the election, he shows his true nature: a manipulative, ruthless, sadistic, tyrannical dictator.

Though he claims that all Ricks don't take any responsibility and use their genius as an excuse for their actions, Evil Morty does the exact same thing as he has committed just as many atrocities towards Mortys as other Ricks have. Despite his undying hatred for them and the corrupt system they represent, Evil Morty was more than capable of solving the problem with the Ricks. In fact, he had already done so when he took over the Citadel and made it so Rick and Mortys are equals.

However, he still was able to escape to a world where Rick isn't the smartest man alive despite the fact his plan was going to kill hundreds if not thousands of Rick's and innocent Mortys. This can assume the real reason Evil Morty concocted his plan to escape the Curve was out of more spite and hatred rather than an actual desire for freedom. Evil Morty justifies that the only thing that makes him evil is the simple fact that he was sick of Rick, not taking any responsibility for the countless innocent Mortys he tortured and killed. Through all of his horrible and selfish actions, Evil Morty ironically was just as bad as, if not even worse than the Ricks he so greatly hated.

In Unmortricken, however, after working with the show's main Rick and Morty, he actually acknowledged to Rick C-137 that he's more different from the other Ricks, but still views it as more of a tool he can use than just a moral.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Evil Morty's backstory is mostly unknown but it's heavily implied that he was simply a normal Morty, and went on adventures with his Rick. But one day after an adventure, he and Rick got into an argument, where Rick said if Morty wanted out, he should quit. Morty left, and in the dead of night made a device. He then returned to the garage to find Rick drunk. Rick stated it would be “Rick and Morty” for 100 years, where after Evil Morty put on his eyepatch, and killed his grandpa, turning him into a mind controlled pawn. From this point Evil Morty began a campaign to permanently leave the Rick centric universe by following a number of steps:

  • Accompanying Evil Rick into the Citadel Records department and erasing any mention of both Evil Rick and Evil Morty and subsequently their universe.
  • Kidnapping Ricks across the Central Finite Curve killing them and downloading their collective knowledge
  • Running for election for complete control of the Citadel
  • Remodel the Citadel to break the C.F.C.
  • Hacking all portal fluid to become a guillotineBullet list
  • Obtaining the final brain scan of
  • Removing the barrier between the C.F.C and Infinite.Bu

It should be noted that Evil Morty's intelligence did not just come from himself but the collective knowledge of every Rick he ever encountered and brain scanned, its not accurate to say he is as intelligent as a Rick but rather he is sum of stolen intelligence and drive to be left alone.

Close Rick-Counters of the Rick Kind[]

You've lived quite a life, Rick. It's a real shame you're not going to be around to see it through.
~ Evil Rick to C-137 Rick.

Afterwards, Evil Morty and his new pawn began killing Ricks across the Multiverse and kidnapping their Mortys. Rick C-137 was blamed and hunted down by the Council.

Now able to control Rick and cover his plans, Evil Morty had hacked C-137 Rick's portal gun and traveled to several universes, killing Ricks and kidnapping hundreds of Mortys to frame C-137 Rick so the Council of Ricks would go against him. When C-137 Rick and Morty traced where the signal was coming from, the two set off to Rick's base.

Do your worst, you little bastards! Kill me! Do it! Do it!
~ Evil Rick upon his death.

Evil Morty then persuaded the imprisoned Mortys to rise up against Evil Rick, and the Mortys bombarded Evil Rick's lair and started to trample Evil Rick to death. After Evil Rick's death, the Council of Ricks returned the Rick-less Mortys to their families to live out the rest of their lives, including Evil Morty.

By the time all the Mortys were boarding ships to depart for their lives, the Council of Ricks had discovered that Evil Rick was a remotely controlled robot that acted under the orders of someone else. In the last scene of Evil Morty, he removed his eye patch - which held the transmitter for Evil Rick - and destroyed it revealing him to be the controller of Evil Rick. Evil Morty then turned to board the departing ships now looking identical to the rest of the Mortys.

The Ricklantis Mixup[]

In "The Ricklantis Mix-Up" Evil Morty secretly developed the alter-ego "Candidate Morty" to become the presidential candidate for the newly-democratic Citadel of Ricks. A Campaign Manager Morty was in charge of the Morty Party though he does not take his own candidate seriously at first. But despite mockery from Ricks and even other Mortys his candidate made a rousing speech about the class divide between the various Ricks and Mortys on the Citadel during a debate which earned him praise and support. Afterward Evil Morty promptly fired his Campaign Manager for a lack of faith.

An Investigator Rick gave Evil Morty's former Campaign Manager Morty a file revealing the candidate's true nature. Horrified at the truth, Campaign Manager Morty tried to assassinate Evil Morty to stop him from getting into office and is promptly arrested. Unfortunately for him, Evil Morty survived the assassination attempt and won the election. The Shadow Council of Ricks revealed themselves as the true power behind the Citadel and informed Evil Morty he would answer to them. The newly-elected president had all of them executed save for two who did not share the same sentiment. Campaign Manager Morty was killed by the Rick Secret Service agents and ejected into space. His body was one of the many bodies floating out of the Citadel's airlocks in the aftermath of the new dictatorship's purge. Also among the dead was Investigator Rick who was killed for uncovering Evil Morty's secret.

Rickmurai Jack[]

In "Rickmurai Jack", Evil Morty's full plan was revealed. He explained to Rick C-137's Morty that there is a Central Finite Curve, a multidimensional wall that separates all the infinite universes where Rick isn't the smartest man alive from all the infinite universes where he is the smartest man alive. He also reveals to Morty that Rick had helped build the Citadel, and thought that it was a shame Rick wouldn't help. Despite this, he did scan Rick's brain during appetizers, and checked Rick's memories on the device. When Morty apologizes to Rick for bringing him here, Evil Morty is disgusted at Morty for his ''sell-out nature", but thought it was pointless to hate him for it, as the Citadel would bred Mortys for forgiveness. He then uses the brain-scanning device to show Morty that the Citadel has became its own market for Mortys, and its abuse of them, as the Citadel would often make Jerrys and Beths fall in love to create Mortys, also cloning the Mortys, with the Mortys shipped to Ricks across the multiverse as companions, and when a Morty dies a new one is then shipped, brainwashed with the old one's memories. Evil Morty then revealed to Rick that he hacked his portal gun, and did the same to the other Ricks and Mortys. Evil Morty reveals that he intended to break through it so he could live away from the madness of Ricks. He then says that the only thing that truly makes him evil is that he finally got sick of Rick and his toxic behavior, and if any Morty had ever felt the same, then they were evil as well. Evil Morty activated a new program in the Citadel's Dimensional Drive, using the blood of Operation Phoenix clones to boost its power. He tore open the Curve and used a small spaceship to fly through the hole, finally leaving behind the realities with toxic versions of Rick and gaining the freedom he always wanted.

Once outside of the Curve, he opened the hatch on his ship and took a breath of relief and opened a golden portal with his own Portal Gun and stepped through it. His current whereabouts are unknown.

Unmortricken[]

Evil Morty is shown having his own adventures in the chaotic universes outside of the Curve, retrieving an energy crystal to power up the ener as well as protect what is his original world from any chaotic runoff or Ricks looking for revenge-like shields for his base. After his base is hit with a powerful shockwave, an upset Evil Morty traces the shockwave to Rick and Morty's mobile base, where the former is merging various universe in order to trap and kill Rick Prime, but only managing to entrap his body doubles. Annoyed by the disruption of his solitude, he begrudgingly helps Rick adjust the scanner ray to make his search easier, while also smugly rubbing in how he would owe his victory over Prime to his support. Unfortunately, the Prime Rick manages to trap is another body double rigged with a special portal fluid that upon being killed by Morty transporting them to Primes death match arena where other Ricks are made to fight each other to the death in exchange for supposedly having their Diane revived. Upon realizing that Prime had an Omega Device that he used to kill every instance of Diane in the Multiverse and could do the same to anyone else he desired, Evil Morty decided to help his enemies defeat him to prevent the weapon from being used to erase every variation of Morty, which naturally would include him.

After escaping the arena and finding Primes location, Rick tells both Morty's to stay put while he exacted his revenge. Evil Morty refuses and bring Morty with him to the Omega Device via his portal gun. He aids Rick and Morty in their fight against Prime, with Evil Morty at one point hacking one of his drones and using them to destroy all of his other robot minions with Morty providing backup with one Prime robot decoys arm cannon. Being blown next to an unconscious Morty at the fights climax while Rick was severely injured, he switches his torn shirt with Morty's and puts his eyepatch on him. Getting Prime into letting his guard down by imitating Morty's meekness, he electrocutes and stuns Prime.

Strapping him to a chair, Evil Morty hooks his brain up to Primes, deactivating his remaining body doubles and downloading the plans for the Omega Device. He then heals Rick and leaves him to finish Prime off while he removes the core of the Device and destroys it, ending the threat the weapon poses to his existence. He assures Rick and Morty that he'll keep the information on the weapon in case he feels the need to rebuild it for his own defense, since using it himself to erase every Rick from the Multiverse would likely result in an army of vengeful Summers coming after him. He also admits that Rick and Morty may be useful to him one day, while also taunting Rick over how killing Prime hadn't brought him any peace before returning to his home outside the Curve.

MultiVersus[]

In MultiVersus, Evil Morty appears within three cosmetics linked to his base counterpart, with his classic Rogue design appearing as one of the game's profile images, the same rogue design baring a cloak and mechanical arm appearing as a variant (with this variant being introduced alongside the beginning of the game's second season), and his President Morty attire appears as one of Morty's variants (with this variant being introduced alongside Morty himself). The Evil Morty variants have unique intro, victory, and defeat animations, although they at present lack unique voice lines.

Quotes[]

Come with me...
~ Evil Morty's first words to Morty.
It would be pointless. Mortys have no chance of defeating a Rick.
~ Evil Morty rejecting Morty's offer to save the other Mortys.
The division I see is between the Ricks and Mortys that like the Citadel divided and the rest of us. I see it everywhere I go. I see it in our schools, where they teach Mortys we’re all the same because they’re threatened by what makes us unique. I see it in our streets, where they give guns to Mortys so we’re too busy fighting each other to fight real injustice. I see it in our factories, where Ricks work for a fraction of their boss’s salary, even though they’re identical and have the same IQ. The Citadel’s problem isn’t homeless Mortys or outraged Ricks. The Citadel’s problem is the Ricks and Mortys feeding on the Citadel’s debt. But I’ve got a message for them, from the Ricks and Mortys keeping it alive. A message… from the Ricks and Mortys that believe in this Citadel to the Ricks and Mortys that don’t: you're outnumbered!
~ Evil Morty's presidential debate speech.
Gosh, we moved around so much, it's hard to remember. I see every Rick as my Rick. I hope they see me as their Morty.
~ Evil Morty responding to a reporter asking who his original Rick was, hiding the fact that he was paired with Evil Rick.
Evil Morty: You were saying, Garment District Rick?
Garment District Rick: We were saying, "President Morty", that we don't care who sits in that seat. A Rick, a Morty, a goddamn Jerry. Doesn't matter! We've been running the Citadel since before the Council, and you'll find that we're still running now.
Evil Morty: (to the entire Shadow Council) Does he really speak for everyone here?
Shadow Council of Ricks: Yeah.
Evil Morty: Well, I think it's important to be clear. Raise your hand if he speaks for you.
~ Evil Morty to the Shadow Council of Ricks before executing the members that raise their hands.
Evil Morty: Sorry I’m late. Never really ends around here.
Rick: Look at this Morty! They really did make a you the president.
Evil Morty: And I hate ‘em every day for it. But wow, Rick C-137! Now that’s a guy to move your schedule around for. Not here to blow the place up again, I hope! Ha ha.
Rick: Ha. Not unless you try to keep me here.
Evil Morty: Geez, wouldn’t dream of it. But it’s amazing you dropped by because I was eventually gonna hunt you down.
Rick: There’s the reveal! Let’s dance.
~ Evil Morty speaking to Rick at dinner, revealing his villainous agenda to him in the process.
Right, no drama. Keep it episodic. Ricks never look back. Waste of a legend in his case. You know, he practically built this place!
~ Evil Morty on Rick's philosophies and past.
Evil Morty: I got a little project going on, acquired some hands-on labor. It would require less if you were willing to tell me how one might bring down the Central Finite Curve...
Rick: Alright, time to go, Morty.
Morty: I wanna know what he’s talking about.
Evil Morty: Yeah, you’ve come all this way. Can you give me ten more seconds?
Rick: Literally ten? Because now it would be six.
Evil Morty: Oh, I’m fine with that. Make it two… one. Like I said, would’ve been a big help for you to tell me, but I should have everything I need from you now. Let me just make sure…
Rick: You can’t scan an entire brain over appetizers.
Evil Morty: Oh, most of yours got scanned a long time ago. You probably don’t remember...
Rick: ...Evil Rick!
Morty: We kicked his ass!
Evil Morty: "Evil Rick". I love it. Smartest man in the universe, with an ego so big you could just grab it like a joystick! Looks complete. I was afraid I’d have to kill every Rick on the Citadel to get what I needed.
~ Evil Morty reveals his true identity as Evil Rick's Morty to Rick and Morty after scanning Rick's memories.
You "sellout Morty"s kill me. I'd hate you more than the Ricks you worship if there were any point. But you can't help it. You were bred for it. Wanna see?
~ Evil Morty to Morty before injecting him with one of Rick's memories.
You already know rogue Ricks used Mortys to hide themselves from the Citadel, but you might not know it worked so well that the Citadel became its own Morty market, and I’m sure you don’t know how far they’ve gone to help supply meet demand. Sure, Ricks could scour infinity for naturally-occurring grandsons, but why bother? So much work. Such an admission of need. There are infinite versions of our grandfather, Morty. He’s an infinite smear of one shitty old man, and he’s attached to us infinitely through his weakness and our forgiveness. This is why we’re with him. This is why we’re alive.
~ Evil Morty reveals the mass production of Mortys by the Citadel of Ricks to Morty.
Disapprove all you want! Tonight, the quality of dialogue stops mattering. Tonight, I do that thing I wanna do, with the Curve thing!
~ Evil Morty after Rick and Morty escape, announcing his plans to initiate the fall of the Central Finite Curve.
Evil Morty: In their minds, they're the underdogs. And that’s how they justify this.
Rick: Morty, I’m not responsible for every f***ed up Rick out there.
Evil Morty: They literally all say that. They all have that excuse. It’s part of their system. None of them have to be responsible. They’re all victims of themselves. "Oh, it’s so hard to be a genius!" Couldn’t you just die?
Morty: What are you doing about it?
Evil Morty: Jacksh*t, I’m leaving. Do you know what the Central Finite Curve is? They built a wall around infinity. They separated all the infinite universes from all the infinite universes where he's the smartest man in the universe. Every version of us has spent every version of all of our lives in one infinite crib built around an infinite f***ing baby. And I'm leaving it. That's what makes me "evil" — being sick of him. If you've ever been sick of him, you've been evil, too.
~ Evil Morty revealing his goals to finally escape the toxic influence of Ricks.
Evil Morty: You can come if you want. Don’t blame me if you don’t.
Rick: Ugh. From where I sit, Morty, that’s the best deal on the table. I-I don’t have a real plan.
(Morty saves Rick from the Citadel's wreckage instead.)
Rick: Thanks, pal. I-I’m glad you ignored my advice.
Evil Morty: It’s just as well. I lied. That second seat’s a toilet.
~ Evil Morty offers to bring Morty to escape the Central Finite Curve, only to abandon him when he save Rick instead.
Motherf-cker.
~ Evil Morty learning Rick is fracking the Central Finite Curve to find Rick Prime.
Not exactly a live amount of blood. How does it feel? Better, not, probably not the same? Yeah always does. Hope your happy with your choice.
~ Evil Morty after Rick-C137 brutally kills Rick Prime.
Because using a weapon like this doesn't get you left alone Morty. You think i want a bunch of vengeful Summers go after me? You are a little different though Rick. Maybe I can use that someday.
~ Evil Morty before leaving the trio back to his Rick-free paradise.

Trivia[]

  • In "The Ricklantis Mix-Up" Evil Morty's plot to take over the Citadel was reminiscent of Frank Underwood from House of Cards.
  • Evil Morty's starring episodes, "Close Rick-counters of the Rick Kind", "The Ricklantis Mixup", and "Rickmurai Jack" end with "For the Damaged Coda" playing in the background (as well as the closing credits for the former two). The song has thus become Evil Morty's leitmotif.
  • Interestingly, Evil Morty appears only in seasons with odd numbers, the reason is unknown.
  • The floating photographs of Evil Morty show the eye patch on the left eye, while the first time he was shown, the eye patch was on the right eye. Similarly, his jacket pocket is on the other side as well. It's uncertain whether this indicates a mirror image (intentional or not) or a Morty from another universe.
  • The nickname, "Evil Morty", was originally provided to this Morty by the wider fan community in reference to him controlling the explicitly named "Evil Rick", and was used unofficially by various members of the show's staff until the season 5 finale, when Rick calls him such. Evil Morty is amused that Rick is finally "all caught up".
    • At the Citadel's Dimensional Drive, President Morty also tells Morty that "now [he's] Evil Morty too" when Morty questions Rick's motives.
  • At the end of "Close Rick-Counters of the Rick Kind", Rick C-137 warns his Morty about becoming too smart for his own good, and he defers on explaining that statement to Morty until he is older. This appears to be a veiled reference to Evil Morty going rogue.
    • Additionally Evil Morty can be considered a dark reflection of every Morty in the Central Finite Curve possibly being what they could have become if they went rouge and turned against the Ricks for their abusive and terrible behavior.
  • Evil Morty wanted the memories of the show's main Rick to find out how to deactivate the Central Finite Curve.
  • According to Rick, Evil Morty is the only person who's ever been able to hack his Portal Gun.
  • It was often believed by fans that Evil Morty was Rick C-137's original Morty before abandoning him for the main Morty of the series. This theory was debunked in "Rickmurai Jack", where it's confirmed that Rick C-137 never had his "original Morty" as his Beth died as a child.
