Villain Overview

We are many; you are but one.
~ Ermac's catchphrase.

Ermac is a major antagonist in the Mortal Kombat franchise. Ermac was created as a living weapon made up of hundreds of warrior souls, to act as a minion of Shao Kahn. He serves as an antagonist in Mortal Kombat 3, while acting as a hero in the 3D era of the series. In the rebooted timeline, he acts as an antagonist in Mortal Kombat (2011) and Mortal Kombat X. He is also a supporting antagonist in Mortal Kombat 1, having been created by Quan Chi instead.

Biography[]

Original timeline[]

Ermac was created by Shao Kahn by fusing together the souls of fallen warriors from Outworld. At some point, as seen in Mortal Kombat: Deception's Konquest mode, he met Shujinko while in the Netherrealm on a mission to kill a demon. Due to his powers being weakened in the Netherrealm, Shujinko retrieved a Soul Stone which Ermac used to replenish his strength, and in gratitude trained the young warrior. He is later seen being attacked by Ashrah, who believed that he was a demon.

Mortal Kombat 3[]

When Shao Kahn invaded Earthrealm, Ermac was part of his forces, fighting against Raiden's champions. He had been in hiding, so none of them had encountered him before, but Outworld's invasion ended up failing. In the years afterwards, Ermac was left wandering Outworld under Kahn's influence until he was freed by the telepathic Kenshi, after which Ermac chose to change his ways.

Second timeline[]

Mortal Kombat (2011)[]

Ermac was introduced by Shang Tsung, the latter mentioned that he was created from hundreds of souls, Ermac was put against Liu Kang but he was defeated.

When Sub-Zero, Jax, and Sonya were in the Soul Chamber, they encountered Ermac. Jax tried to punch him, but with the power of his telekinesis, Ermac both stopped and blew both of the major's arms off, nearly killing him. While Sonya was doing her best to heal Jax, Ermac fought with Sub-Zero and was defeated by him. Ermac reappears again in the second Mortal Kombat tournament, fighting and defeating Johnny Cage. It is unknown which kombatant beat him afterwards.

During the invasion on Earthrealm, Ermac joined the invasion. When Stryker tried to help Kabal after being heavily burnt by Kintaro, Ermac used his telekinesis and threw Stryker in the subway, Ermac approached Striker and fought with him, but he ended up defeated again.

When Cyber Sub-Zero was trying to save the Earthrealm prisoners, Ermac appeared and pushed all of the Earthrealm prisoners back so that they would not escape. He confronted Cyber Sub-Zero, however just like their previous fight, Ermac lost and disappeared.

In his non canon ending, Ermac defeated Shao Kahn, and all the souls that made his being struggled for his body, surprisingly only one managed to become the dominant soul, Ermac went to Outworld and found Sindel and Kitana, upon seeing them he revealed to be King Jerrod, the king decided to serve Sindel and all the Edenian people.

Mortal Kombat X[]

Ermac returns as an antagonist in Mortal Kombat X, after the death of Shao Kahn he decided to serve Mileena, when D'Vorah revealed the truth about her, he betrayed the former empress and joined with Kotal Kahn forces. He later fought with Takeda but was defeated, after Kotal Kahn declared war against Earthrealm he attacked Jacqui, but the girl managed to overcome him and was forced to escape along with the rest of the army back to Outworld after Sub Zero attacked them.

In his non-canon ending, Ermac is lured by a faint voice in Shao Kahn's old fortress, and began to have several of his souls taken. As it turned out, Shang Tsung had managed to exist as a echo and he restored himself by feeding on Ermac's souls.

Mortal Kombat 11[]

Ermac doesn't appear in the main story or as a playable character in Mortal Kombat 11, but he is mentioned by Jax's past self, who wants pay back for what Ermac did to his arm but Jacqui reveals she already defeated Ermac. Even though she got revenge for what Ermac did to her dad, Jacqui didn't kill him.

In The Krypt, Ermac can be found in the ruins on Shang Tsung's Island. He is beneath the Pit impaled onto a spike.

Third Timeline[]

Mortal Kombat 1[]

Ermac was created by Quan Chi as the product of a soulnado that was activated in Outworld's Living Forest. As such, he is made up of thousands of souls of those who were resting there, including the soul of Emperor Jerrod, the husband of Empress Sindel and the father of Mileena and Kitana. Ermac declares his status and servitude to Quan Chi, before being commanded by the sorcerer to exterminate the heroes. With his overwhelming telekinetic power, courtesy of the collected souls within, Ermac quickly begins thrashing his opposition. Despite his strength advantage, the tables turn against him when Kenshi enters a deeper connection with his clan's sword, Sento, and manages to stab Ermac, siphoning some of the souls within and adapting the construct's telekinesis to Kenshi. With this new trick up their sleeve, Kenshi and Ashrah defeat Ermac, but not before the soul of Emperor Jerrod manages to manifest on his face, shouting for Sindel before Ermac collapses.

Later, Ermac recovers and relocates to Ying Fortress, the base of operations for Quan Chi and his partner-in-crime, fellow sorcerer Shang Tsung. Tasked with defending the fortress, Ermac discovers the intruding Lin Kuei trio of Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Smoke. After Sub-Zero defeats Nitara and Sareena, Ermac snares Sub-Zero's arms and legs with his telekinesis, attempting to tear him apart, but Sub-Zero breaks free, blasting him to the ground with a spiked ice ball. As Ermac gets back up, Sub-Zero expresses his interest in battling against Quan Chi's dark magic, before beating the construct back into unconsciousness.

Ermac remains at the fortress up until Liu Kang's attack on it with the help of Sindel, Kitana, Tanya, Mileena, Smoke, and Scorpion. As the heroes split up to take down the soul stealers, Ermac attacks Mileena and Tanya by launching rubble from a fortress wall at them, managing to knock them down with his powers and toss them back over the same wall. Mileena checks on Tanya, discovering she had taken severe rib damage, but Ermac gives them no time to recover as he prepares to battle Mileena. However, the princess prevails over him (and the accompanying Sareena), her attack breaking the spell that bound Ermac's souls together and allowing Jerrod to become the primary spirit within.

Jerrod reunites with his family and joins his old ally Liu Kang in the battle against Shang Tsung and subsequently his Titan counterpart. Sindel is killed in the conflict, but her soul is collected within Ermac, allowing her to persist. Following Titan Shang Tsung's defeat, Jerrod remains beside the now-Empress Mileena as counsel, although he and Sindel continue to fight the other souls within Ermac for control of the body.

Other Appearances[]

  • In Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, Ermac fought with Sonya Blade along with Noob Saibot, but he was defeated and killed by Sonya.
  • In Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm, Ermac appears in only one episode where he used a female ninja named Ruby to fight with Jax and betray the other warriors.

Powers and Abilities[]

Ermac is skilled with Psychic powers, with this power he is able to levitate and teleport himself. Like with most of the other kombantants, Ermac has super human abliities, being much stronger, faster, and tougher than even the average metahuman. With his Psychic powers, he is strong enough to make someone's arms explode as shown when he did so to Jax. He can also shoot energy blasts out of his hands.

Ermac becomes more powerful each time he takes someone's soul. He was powerful enough to hold his own against Liu Kang and defeat Johnny Cage with ease. Finally, Ermac is highly skilled in kombat, retaining the abilities of every soul that he consumes. That said, even after consuming many souls, there are several kombantants out there that can defeat him such as Takeda.

  • Fusion of Souls: Ermac is not one person, but an entire collection of souls of warriors brought together into physical form through means of powerful magic, courtesy of Shao Kahn. Due to this, Ermac always refers to himself as a group instead of a single person (saying things such as, "we" and "us", instead of, "I" or "me").
    • Superhuman Strength: Ermac is able to lift a lot of weight and can send opponents flying at great distances with just a single punch.
    • Superhuman Speed: Ermac can move at incredible speeds and react to great speeds.
    • Superhuman Stamina: Ermac can fight for great amounts of time without feeling exhausted.
      • Self-Sustenance: Ermac doesn't need to eat or drink to survive.
    • Superhuman Endurance: Ermac can tolerate high amounts of physical pain and can still fight. He can also keep fighting after being stabbed at the chest by Kenshi's sword.
    • Superhuman Senses: Ermac has incredible senses. He can sense Cassie Cage and her team close by when in the Dead Woods.
    • Magic: Ermac possesses various powers related to many of the souls within him, most commonly in the form of telekinesis, which allows him to manipulate every aspect of living and non-living objects with his mind. In addition to his telekinesis, he is also able to manipulate soul energy because of his composition, which he utilizes in the form of both levitation and firing projectile attacks. Ermac also has telepathy and the ability to teleport.
      • Soul Manipulation: With his soul magic, he can fire green projectiles from his hands and can add more souls to his collection to gain more power.
      • Size Manipulation: Ermac also has the power to shrink his opponent down and kill them by stomping on the shrunken opponent.
      • Telepathy: Like Kenshi and Takeda, he has the ability to read opponents minds. As showcased by Takeda's failed attempt, Ermac is immune to telepathy due to the many minds of the thousands of souls within his body.
      • Telekinesis: Telekinesis is one of his most known abilities. He can cause his opponent to levitate and slam them down to the ground. He can also use it to rip his opponents in half, and rip their arms, legs, heads, and organs from their bodies. This was shown when he ripped of Jax's arms in Mortal Kombat 2011.
      • Teleportation: Similar to Scorpion, Ermac can teleport by disappearing in green soul energy and reappearing somewhere else.
    • Flight: Ermac also has the ability to fly.
    • Immortality: Being a collection of souls, Ermac doesn't seem to age.

Abilities[]

  • Master Martial Artist: Ermac is also immensely skilled in physical combat. This may also be the result the fact that many of the souls that make up his body are that of ancient warriors who possibly are the source of his knowledge of different forms of martial arts. He has been able to best Johnny Cage and Smoke in combat during the tournament.
    • Hua Chuan
    • Choy Lay Fut
  • Master Acrobat: Ermac does have skills in acrobatics. He can flip and leap at great distances.
  • Weapon Proficiency: While not shows, he does have skills in weapons in the earlier games. He can wield an axe.
  • Advanced Intelligence: Ermac does have intelligence. He has a vast knowledge of Outworld and its inhabitants. He also has been able to remember events from many years ago.
  • Indomitable Will: Ermac also is known to have incredible force of will. Since Shao Kahn's death and Kotal, D'Vorah, and Reptile's plan to depose Mileena, he soon was able to realize that he now has the right to choose who to serve. This causes him to defect against Mileena and aid Kotal in the fight.

Weaknesses[]

  • The Netherrealm: While he may not appear to have any at first glance, Ermac does have one major weakness: the Netherrealm itself. Since he is a being created completely by magic, his powers would decrease over time the longer he stays in the realm, weakening the bond holding the souls together and overall threatening his very existence. However, by using a mysterious stone dubbed the Soul Stone Shujinko found for him, he ultimately is protected from this threat.

Quotes[]

We will break you as well.
~ Ermac to Sub-Zero after ripping off Jax's arms.
Ermac: You are spawn of Jackson Briggs.

Jacqui: And damn proud of it! I know what you did to him.
Ermac: We took your father's arms. We will take all of you!

~ Ermac and Jacqui before they fight.
We are Ermac. A collection of souls, bound by Quan Chi's magic. We live to obey his commands.
~ Ermac's introduction in Mortal Kombat 1.
