Dr. Edmund Zuwanie , also calls himself "The Teacher", is the main antagonist of the film The Interpreter. He is the president of the fictional African country of Matobo. Initially a liberator, over the past 20 years he has become as corrupt and tyrannical as the government he overthrew, and is now responsible for ethnic cleansing and other atrocities within Matobo, so terrible that the United Nations is considering indicting him in front of the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

In the film, he is portrayed by Earl Cameron.

He is indirectly responsible for the death of UN interpreter Silvia Broome's family, when the family's car hit a land mine that was placed on the road by Zuwanie's agents (according to Nils Lud, the entire road was mined in order to combat the threat of rebels in the area), killing Silvia's parents and younger sister. He is also directly responsible for the murder of Silvia's brother Simon and political revolutionary Ajene Xola, who is a former lover of Silvia who Simon serves as a lieutenant of sorts of, when a few of Zuwanie's child assassins kill them.

In order to avoid indictment, he excercises his right to speak in front of the UN General Assembly, and secretly stages a false assassination plot on his life with members of his security detail, to make his acts look like justified actions against terrorism. This become the central plot point for the entire film.
