Durin's Bane was a powerful Balrog that escaped from battle when the Valar threw back Morgoth's army. He fled into the mountains that would later host the dwarven kingdom of Moria. He slept for hundreds of years, and awoke once the Moria orcs took over Moria from the dwarves. He woke at the time the Fellowship of the Ring (Frodo Baggins, Sam Gamgee, Pippin Took, Merry Brandybuck, Legolas Greenleaf, Aragorn Elessar, Gimli and Gandalf the Grey) and chased them through the mines. Gandalf battled with the Balrog to give the Company the time they needed to escape, and threw the Balrog down an almost never-ending pit. Durin's Bane, however, managed to wrap his whip around Gandalf's foot and throw him into the pit too. They batted while they fell, and landed in a large icy underground lake, where Durin's Bane's eternal fire was extinguished, and he was defeated by Gandalf on a snowy mountian peak, naming Gandalf the White Wizard.
