He was a wealthy and unscrupulous aristocrat, a potential investor in the cabaret and became increasingly antagonistic as the story progressed.
The Duke is an obsessive fan of Satine after watching her performances but Satine fell in love with Christian an aspiring writer of whom she mistook for the duke. Since they had feelings each other in other secret and Duke interrupted them in the practice for the musical. Angered by Satine's love for Christian, The duke made deal with Zidler (Satine's father figure) convince her to leave Christian because she was dying of tuberculosis. He later attempts to kill Christian during the musical but gets knocked unconscious after numerous attempts. Shortly before Satine's death he flees the scene and gets away with his attempted murder.
