Dmitrii Blinov is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Celia Fortner) of the video-game Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow.

He is one of the potential successors to Count Dracula who inherited his power of Mimicry. Celia Fortner pits him against Dario Bossi and the main hero Soma Cruz, Dracula's reincarnation, in a battle royale to determine who shall become the new King of the Night. In the good ending, his careless actions spawn the final boss Menace.

He was voiced by Hidehiko Kaneko.

Personality[]

Dmitrii first appears as someone laid-back and calm, observing what unfolds with little more than amused interest. He states that he wants to explore the extent of his power, and that his only motivation for following Celia is an opportunity for doing so. He is haughty, sarcastic and condescending, but not overtly aggressive and even somewhat friendly.

At second glance however, Dmitrii is revealed to be cold, selfish, cruel, and relentless. He is a textbook sociopath, clearly unhinged and mentally disturbed to boot, being aloof, uncaring, unable to view others as anything but tools to use and discard, with grandiose sense of self-worth and overinflated ego. Despite his facade of friendliness, he is arrogant, sneering, scornful and violent. He considers the throne of Dracula to be rightfully his, and would stop at nothing to eliminate obstacles without remorse. Furthermore, he cannot stand contradiction and reacts very badly to setbacks.

While manipulative, cunning and strategic, using foes and allies to get what he wants, testing people and thinking on his feet to find ways around troubles he cannot face head-on, he is extremely conceited, smug and overconfident.

He takes great care in learning all he can about his foes, but mistakenly believes this is enough to get the upper-hand. Plus, he fails to consider all sides of the problems, gets way over his head, and his plans leave too much to be desired. Like many other villains, his excessive pride and confidence proves his undoing.

Powers And Abilities[]

Dmitrii is incredibly fast, spry and agile, with exceptional reflexes. He displays superhuman athletic feats and wields a dagger in battle with great skill, being able to kill very powerful demons without breaking a sweat.

Dmitrii inherited Dracula's Power of Mimicry, enabling him to copy the powers of his foes, albeit on a lower scale. As such, he becomes able to use any attack used against him, with the same power and skill as it original user. Still, as soon as he copies one attack, he can no longer use his previous. While this makes him fearsome in a duel of pure might, it can be used against him by allowing him to copy an ability unsuited for combat.

Dmitrii later reveals that he can send his soul in and out his and others' body, though how he can do remains unexplained. Probably a power he copied and retains since this is not an attack. He also reveals that his power of Mimicry also enables him to copy powers his soul comes in contact with. He uses it to copy Soma's power of Dominance, enabling him to absorb the souls of all the monsters he kills to gain their powers. He takes advantage of it to kill as many demons as possible to absorb their souls.

However, he needs his own body and soul to be able to assimilate these foreign souls and power, running the risk of losing control of all their powers at great hazards for himself.

History[]

Background[]

Dracula was destroyed for good in 1999 and his Castlevania was sealed into a solar eclipse, bringing what everyone hoped to be the end of the conflict between Good and Evil. Unfortunately, Dracula was reincarnated and three men born the exact same day of his destruction inherited some of his Dark Powers. Among them Graham Jones, Dario Bossi and Dmitrii himself, who gained the power to copy the abilities of others.

36 years later in 2035, Graham entered the Castlevania and attempted to take it over, only to get killed in battle by Soma Cruz, the true reincarnation of Dracula who rejected his Dark Legacy. However, even Soma's victory over Chaos, the source of all Evil, was not enough to destroy Evil. One year later, the Dark Priestess Celia Fortner invited Dmitrii, Dario and Soma into the Castlevania lookalike she had created, organizing a competition to see who would prevail and earn the title of the new King of the Night.

In Game[]

Dmitrii is first seen alongside Celia and Dario, as the former is trying to re-awake Soma's powers and force him to partake in his schemes. As they venture in the Castle, Soma witnesses him killing a Malachi monster: a powerful Cthulhu-looking demon. The two later duel to the death.

Boss Battle[]

Dmitrii attacks Soma with a dagger and with the Malachi's special attack "Nightmare": a huge sphere of ghostly energy, that moves slowly and can be jumped over. Dmitrii instantly copies whatever magic attack Soma strikes him with and uses it instead of "Nightmare", so it is advised to only strike him with normal weapons or to make him copy the least dangerous attack possible. Dmitrii is very fast, agile and spry, dodging Soma's attacks with backward dashes and somersaults, but all in all he is rather easy to defeat.

Bad Endings[]

Dmitrii apparently dies at the end of the fight and Soma absorbs his soul, due to his own power of Dominance. If the player triggers the bad ending (during which Soma becomes the King of Night) or the regular ending (during witch Soma trashes Celia's plan), Dmitrii never reappears and is thought dead.

Good Ending[]

If on the contrary Soma can see through Celia's deceit and resist corruption, it is revealed that Dmitrii let his soul get absorbed by Soma, so that he would copy his Power of Dominance from the inside. He then possesses a doppelganger to resurrect himself physically, gloating about risky gambles paying off. He boasts that with Dracula's power he can succeed him instead of his reincarnation, and threatens to kill a weakened Soma if Dracula's son Alucard does not let him go. He then departs with Celia within the Abyss of the Castle to be crowned as the King of the Night.

There, he uses Celia (whom he no longer needs) as a sacrifice to break Alucard's power, who tracked him down and tried to stop him. He later absorbs the souls of as many demons as possible to gain their powers and become "invincible", awaiting Soma in front of a defeated Alucard, with Celia's corpse hanging as a gloomy ornament.

Dmitrii destroys Celia's corpse to demonstrate his newfound power, and challenges Soma to see who better wields the Power of Dominance. However, as his power is merely a copy, he cannot hold all his souls within his own, which Alucard notices. Infuriated, he blasts him away with a wave of dark energy, but too late.

The souls overwhelm him and burst out of his back, killing him instantly. As Dmitrii dies for real, victim of his own hubris, they merge into the gargantuan abomination named Menace, forcing Soma to kill it before it can escape the Abyss and destroy the world.
