Villain Overview

You'll be laughing on the other side of your boilers soon, silly steamies! (Laughs evily) Yes!
~ Diesel 10 swore his return in Thomas & Friends: Misty Island Rescue.
Make the most of tonight, Twinkle Toes, because you won't like tomorrow!
~ Diesel 10 to Mr. Conductor.

Diesel 10 is the overarching antagonist of the Thomas & Friends franchise.

He is an extremely villainous diesel engine with a rooftop hydraulic claw nicknamed "Pinchy" who is noted by Thomas for being 10 out of 10 devious deeds and brutal strength. Diesel 10 is described to be a feared diesel throughout the Island of Sodor as he has been causing trouble for steam engines, but is also obsessed on wanting to destroy a magical steam engine named Lady. In the past, he deliberately caused her to crash, but although he badly damaged her, Diesel 10 failed to destroy Lady. He is Lady's archenemy as well as Thomas' main arch-nemesis above Diesel despite appearing after him.

In Thomas and the Magic Railroad, he was originally voiced by Keith Scott, who also played Arktos in The Tabaluga franchise, but was replaced by Neil Crone. In Misty Island Rescue and Day of the Diesels, he was originally voiced by Rupert Degas, but was replaced by Matt Wilkinson.

Biography[]

Past[]

Not much is known about Diesel 10's origins, but years ago, he once visited the Island of Sodor and caused trouble for the steam engines while he was there. During his visit, he encounters Lady, a magical steam engine who serves as the guardian of the Magic Railroad (a magical railway which connects Sodor to the town of Shining Time) and uses her magic to keep the worlds of Shining Time and Sodor alive. Diesel 10 once chased Lady and her caretaker Burnett Stone, but during the chase, Burnett used up all her coal and made Lady go too fast, causing Diesel 10 to catch up and crash her. Lady was then taken back to Muffle Mountain and stored inside Burnett's workshop, where he spent years desperately trying to restore her to working order, but is unable to find the right coal to make her steam. Without Lady, the Magic Railroad soon began to lose its energy.

Thomas and the Magic Railroad[]

Several years later, Diesel 10 returned to Sodor when the Fat Controller (Sir Topham Hatt) was on holiday, intending to find Lady and destroy her once and for all. He was first seen when he raced past Thomas and Gordon at Killaban Station, kicking up dust and dirt everywhere. He shows up again where he interjects Thomas' conversation with James at Tidmouth Sheds, explaining to them about his plan to destroy a "lost engine" (referring to Lady) and establish Diesels as the dominant engines on Sodor before leaving. At his mountain, Diesel 10 brings his two dimwitted sidekicks Splatter and Dodge, telling them of his plan to get rid of Lady. The two bumbling diesels report that Mr. Conductor is on his way to Sodor, so Diesel 10 decides to destroy him as well, only to humiliate himself in front of Splatter and Dodge when he is whacked in the face by his claw. Diesel 10 sends Splatter and Dodge to Tidmouth Sheds to spy on the steam engines, and while they laugh at Thomas and the others, Harold flies by, spreading sneezing powder dumped by Diesel 10, all over the three engines.

That night, when Mr. Conductor and the engines are sleeping, Diesel 10 stealthily rolls up and smashes down the side of the sheds with his claw, waking up the engines and Mr. Conductor in the process. Mr. Conductor reprimands Diesel 10, but discovers that he has run out of gold dust. As Diesel 10 demands Mr. Conductor to confess Lady's whereabouts while threatening him and the other engines that he will tear down the shed even more, Mr. Conductor frightens Diesel 10 by holding out a bag of sugar in front of him, threatening the evil diesel that he will dump it in his fuel tanks to seize him up for good, causing Diesel 10 to leave, vowing that he will return.

Later, Percy and Thomas talk about Mr. Conductor and conclude that he travels to Sodor on the Magic Railroad by a set of magic buffers, unaware that their conversation is overheard by Diesel 10, who was hiding nearby. Delighted, he heads over to the Sodor Ironworks to meet up with Splatter and Dodge so that he can explain them his plan. However, Toby, who had secretly followed Diesel 10 because he knew the wicked diesel was up to something, observes him discussing to Splatter and Dodge of his plan to destroy the magic buffers that leads to the Magic Railroad as it would cause engines to not only derail and crash, but also could destroy both Lady and the Magic Railroad at the same time, thus the gold dust would cease to exist, making Mr. Conductor unable to travel between Shining Time and Sodor without it. To distract Diesel 10, Toby rings his bell loudly, causing the latter, who is alerted by the noise, to recognize him before trying to attack Toby using his claw. Unfortunately, his claw knocks down the whole shed, trapping Diesel 10 and his sidekicks under its roof in the process.

The next morning, when Mr. Conductor travels across Sodor to find the windmill in order to search for gold dust, he is confronted by Diesel 10, who captures Mr. Conductor with his claw before holding him over a viaduct, threatening him that he will deliberately drop Mr. Conductor to his death if he doesn't tell him the whereabouts of the magic buffers that lead to the Magic Railroad. However, Mr. Conductor manages to escape by using a pair of wire cutters to cut one of the cables connected to his claw, causing Diesel 10 to fling him across the island towards the windmill. At the coaling plant, when asked by Splatter and Dodge on how come he let Mr. Conductor escape, Diesel 10 only replies that he just did it on purpose and was testing to see if he could escape. Splatter and Dodge mock him and Diesel 10 angrily decides to teach the two a lesson about "how to stop being stupid", but accidentally gets himself covered in coal, causing the engines to laugh at him, much to his anger.

When Mr. Conductor's cousin Junior was thrown into the air due to a strong wind while riding on the windmill's sails after bringing Burnett's granddaughter Lily to Sodor so they can meet Mr. Conductor with assistance from Thomas, he landed on the roof of Diesel 10, who was prowling around Sodor (possibly searching for the magic buffers) and kidnaps Junior before giving him a "ride" across the island until they reached the smelter's yard. There, Diesel 10 flipped Junior onto James before sadistically attempting to kill the two by forcing them toward a deep pit with the intention of sending them falling to their deaths while Junior tries to whistle both of them out, only to discover that he is out of gold dust, just like his cousin. As Diesel 10 prepares to kill them, Junior uses the last of his extra gold dust to teleport himself and James away to safety, much to Diesel 10's shock.

After Lady was brought back to life by Burnett using special Island of Sodor coal from a missing coal truck Thomas and Lily picked up from the Magic Railroad and returned to Sodor where they reunite with Mr. Conductor and Junior, Diesel 10 (accompanied by Splatter and Dodge) eventually finds her with Thomas and the group near the buffers. Upon discovering that she is alive again, Diesel 10 attempts to finish what he started by destroying Lady once again since he previously failed to succeed in the past, intending to not only destroy her, but also Thomas as well. He then orders his sidekicks to support him, but Splatter and Dodge, having suddenly redeemed themselves as they are now tired of their boss's attitude, betray Diesel 10 and refuse to follow him, leaving their boss to do his own dirty work instead.

As Diesel 10 pursues Lady, Thomas and Burnett throughout the Kirk Ronan sites with the intention of attacking them with his claw (even attempting to bash his claw onto Thomas' cab roof to knock him off the rails, though he couldn't catch up to him as Thomas kept on puffing faster), the chase climaxes when they finally reach the viaduct. Though Lady, Burnett and Thomas successfully managed to cross safely as the viaduct starts to crumble and fall apart as a result of the Magic Railroad losing its energy, Diesel 10 is unable to stop in time as he approaches the bridge and falls off due to the viaduct collapsing under his weight. However, he was able to use his claw to hold onto one of the sleepers of the dangling track, leaving him hanging on for his life. The sleeper unfortunately breaks regardless, sending a screaming Diesel 10 plummeting onto a barge full of boiler sludge below, causing him to get towed away downriver and out of sight. What happened to Diesel 10 afterwards is currently unknown, though it is assumed that he was towed away out of Sodor or was sent away by Sir Topham Hatt for his crimes against Mr. Conductor and the steam engines.

Uncut version[]

ThomasandtheMagicRailroad252

This scene showing P.T. Boomer on top of Diesel 10 was not edited for the final cut.

In the original cut, Diesel 10 was the secondary antagonist, with the main antagonist being a human named P.T. Boomer (portrayed by the late Doug Lennox). It was revealed that Boomer was the one who wrecked Lady instead of Diesel 10. When test audiences complained he was too scary for younger viewers, the film was edited and all scenes with Boomer were removed, even though he can still be seen in a few of them.

In an early script for the film, the character was intended to be killed off. After falling off the viaduct, Junior would have used his magic bandana to turn Diesel 10 and Boomer into sludge.

Diesel 10 was originally going to be voiced by Australian voice actor Keith Scott (who is better known for voicing Bullwinkle J. Moose from The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and the narrator from George of the Jungle), but after the test screening, there were complaints about his voice being too scary for younger viewers, so Scott was replaced with Canadian actor Neil Crone.

Initially, Crone played Diesel 10 with a Russian accent, but this was deemed too offensive and replaced with a New Jersey accent.

Television Specials[]

Calling All Engines![]

However, Diesel 10 returns later on, apparently not defeated once and for all. He appears in Calling All Engines! as the overarching antagonist. Though he was not really a villain within the work, he is still antagonistic towards Thomas, who eventually musters up the courage to ask Diesel 10's help in the construction of Sodor's airport. Diesel 10 aids in the construction on the pretense of proving himself to be useful.

Misty Island Rescue[]

He has a cameo in the post-credits scene of Misty Island Rescue remarking that the steamies will "laugh on the other side on their boilers soon".

Day of the Diesels[]

Diesel 10 (DOTD)

His appearance in Day of the Diesels.

His comment foreshadows the following feature Day of the Diesels with him as the main antagonist. During Day of the Diesels, Percy becomes depressed over Thomas befriending the new engine Belle and is won over by Diesel, who claims he can be Percy's new friend. Percy goes with Diesel to the Dieselworks (a place steam engines are informed to never go) and discovers Diesel 10 amongst the other diesels of the special. Ultimately, Diesel 10 manipulates Percy into siding with the diesels by playing with his sympathy in regards to the horrid condition of the Dieselworks. Percy progressively tries to help, such as enlisting Kevin the Crane from the Steamworks, but becomes more and more upset when he is unable to relate the diesels' situation and when Thomas becomes chummier with the new arrivals, Belle and Flynn the fire engines. Thomas is sent to retrieve Kevin once the truth comes out but is held prisoner at the Dieselworks.

Diesel 10's plot to take over the Steamworks as diesel territory succeeds and he mocks Percy as he and his cronies fool around on the Steamworks' equipment and sidings. Fortunately, Percy sets things right, even as the Dieselworks burns down in the process. Diesel 10 is then scolded by Sir Topham Hatt at the Steamworks who informs him that "some things are worth waiting for" (which oddly shames Diesel 10). The Dieselworks is rebuilt and Diesel 10 seems very happy about it. Though time will tell if he tries another attempt at evil-doing.

Despite returning to his villain status, Diesel 10 is still the victim of abuse within Day of the Diesels in how the automatic doors to his shed in the Dieselworks repeatedly close on him as he exits and enters it. In addition, his goal to take over the Steamworks is not entirely without sympathy. Whereas the Steamworks is kept well-maintained, fully-functional and in pristine condition, the Dieselworks was formerly dirty, run-down, and poorly-maintained. Considering these squalid conditions, it was only natural for the diesels to feel neglected by the Fat Controller (who in reality had been intending to rebuild it himself, but (owing to the pressures of running the railway) had been previously unable to).

Television series[]

Season 17[]

However, Diesel 10 was soon back to his bad self again in the episode The Missing Christmas Decorations, as he stole Christmas decorations from Tidmouth Sheds as the Dieselworks lack decorations. But his lack of patience once again got the better of him as it was later discovered that the Diesels were about to get Christmas decorations for their own. But they let the Steam Team have their decorations to replace the damaged ones after Percy got new wheels for Sidney, a diesel who has been hoisted up by a crane for two years waiting for his new wheels.

After that, Diesel 10 was not recently seen again after that. However, his claw, Pinchy, appeared again, but not Diesel 10 himself.

Personality[]

Diesel 10 is an evil, conniving, manipulative, bullying and raving diesel locomotive. He absolutely despises steam engines, and would call them nicknames like "Puffball" and "Teapot". He is Sodor's strongest (but not quite largest) diesel, his power being enforced by his slightly malfunctioning claw, Pinchy. He can use this deftly, and is even able to use it to make a sculpture. Pinchy (though) seems to have a mind of its own, as it has been shown to "punch" Diesel 10 in the face from time to time, which he loathes. All engines (steam and diesel alike) fear or respect him.

He is also shown to be extremely ruthless, psychotic, sadistic and murderous, as he once tried to push James and Junior into the smelting pit at the Smelter's Yard. But Junior used the last of his gold dust to teleport him and James to safety. Despite his brutality, some of his demeanor appears to have cooled, and his behavior has apparently improved enough that Sir Topham Hatt allowed him back to the Island. He gets along enough with the other Sudrian diesels, but his efforts to help are often only when it suits his personal interest and he still harbors his scheming ways and anti-steam sentiments.

In Day of the Diesels and The Missing Christmas Decorations, Diesel 10 is shown to have a lack of patience.

Appearance[]

Diesel 10 is a large dark brown-olive warship diesel with a pale grey fierce-looking face, a cleft chin, danger stripes and a large robotic arm on his roof. Diesel 10 has had a few modifications throughout the television series. These include:

  • Calling All Engines!:
    • His pupils became bigger.
    • His brake pipe was removed.
    • The wipers on his front windows were removed.
    • His body is incorrectly fitted to his chassis at the front, leaving a gap above his front bufferbeam.
  • Misty Island Rescue:
    • The 'teeth' on his claw now interlock.
    • His upper bodywork is level once again, but fitted higher with gaps above both bufferbeams now.

Trivia[]

  • In an original version of the Thomas and the Magic Railroad script, Diesel 10 was to have been a new engine to the island, and Pinchy was going to be hidden beneath Diesel 10's roof. These were kept in the book, Diesel 10 Means Trouble, the magazine story Left Alone also possibly has him illustrated without his claw.
    • Also, when Neil Crone replaced Keith Scott as the voice of Diesel 10, he initially had a Russian accent. However, due to complaints from test audiences, who believed it could be considered offensive, it was changed to a New Jersey accent.
  • "Pinchy" was originally built with no gaps between its buckets, which carried onto early promotional arts/illustrations.
  • Diesel 10 only appeared in specials and movies until the seventeenth series, where he appeared in an episode for the first time. The seventeenth series also marked his final appearance in the series, though his popularity with the fanbase allowed merchandise of him to continue production even after his discontinuation in media.
  • Outside of Thomas and the Magic Railroad, Pinchy has not been named, and is simply referred to as a claw.
  • Some of Diesel 10's production-made face masks are now owned by a Twitter user.
  • In early concept art, Diesel 10 had his name painted on his side. In addition, his claw bucket was smaller, his arm was designed differently, and he had three brake pipes, whereas his final model only had one.
  • His Ertl toy depicts him as a BR Class 46 with an added claw. This is due to re-using Diesel 199's tooling but with modifications.
  • Diesel 10 is the first villain in the series' films and specials, to be an arch-nemesis of the main protagonists.
  • Diesel 10's claw was briefly used during Rebecca's imagination scene in What Rebecca Does.
  • Despite Britt Allcroft claiming that it just popped into her mind, it is believed that Diesel 10's name is a reference to him being the tenth diesel engine to be introduced into the television series.
  • Diesel 10's horn sound was most likely reused from the "Theodore Tugboat" characters Philip and Filmore.
  • Diesel 10 had a total of eight facial expressions, one of which, a clenched face, was never shown on-screen. There have also been copies of some of his face masks as well.
  • Due to the limitations of his Gauge 1 model, the bottom half of Pinchy's bucket was unable to move until his return in CGI.
  • Diesel 10 didn't appear again in Thomas & Friends since The Missing Christmas Decorations likely because the writers and Mattel (the current owner of the series) thought he was too scary for the audience (due to the show being targeted at younger children) which is ironic since P.T. Boomer got removed from Thomas and the Magic Railroad for the same reason.
    • It could also be because of how Thomas and the Magic Railroad was distributed by Destination Films, which is owned by Sony Pictures so the movie's characters are owned by Sony, therefore Mattel may not have the rights to Diesel 10 and the other characters.
  • In the Thomas Minis merch range, he has received variants as the Joker, Solomon Grundy, Deadshot, Plankton, Lord Zedd and Shredder in the DC Super Friends, Spongebob Squarepants, Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles themes.
  • In real life, adding in a hydraulic claw onto a diesel engine would most likely be considered illegal, if it was not approved by government authorities. Meaning he was likely built illegally.
  • It is unknown what happened to Diesel 10 after the episode "The Missing Christmas Decorations", either he was sent away from Sodor forever or was transferred to work on a scrapyard in Barrow in Furness.
