Thou shalt be mad for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see.
~ Deuteronomy 28:34, used as a description for Unrelenting Delirium in The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls.

Delirium is the main antagonist and final boss of the The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth DLC The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth †. The representation of Isaac's life flashing before his eyes as he's slowly dying in the chest, it is fought at the end of The Void.

Appearance[]

Delirium's main form is a gooey, white, almost-skull like head with glowing yellow eyes peeking out of its sockets, with strands of the material that make it up dripping into his own maw, and no body. When shapeshifting into a boss, it takes the form of that boss with the same color and eyes, and also appear to be made of the same gooey material as Delirium. For a few of the bosses, Delirium creates extra eyes within its body that were not present in their original counterparts.

Biography[]

Starting with Mom, there's a small chance that a portal will open up to the Void at the end of final boss, should Isaac be strong enough. Alternatively, the portal is guaranteed to spawn should Isaac fight Hush.

Taking the portal will lead Isaac to The Void, a labyrinth of previous floors and rooms. While The Void has multiple boss rooms, only one of them contains Delirium, as all the others will spawn a random boss.

Delirium is a unique boss in that its main method of attacking is shapeshifting into previous bosses to do their attacks, with wildly ranging results based on the bosses Isaac has fought during the run. The only bosses it can't shapeshift into is most minibosses, such as the Seven Deadly Sins or Krampus. Besides its transforming properties, Delirium can teleport around its arena and send shockwaves of projectiles.

Defeating Delirium will cause The Void to shift into The Chest. The ending gained for defeating Delirium reveals that Isaac is currently suffocating inside of his toy chest, having convinced himself that he is evil. As the events in his life leading up to this flashed before his eyes, Isaac died in the chest alone, only for his skeleton to be discovered by his mother some time later.

Trivia[]

  • If Delirium is killed while taking the form of Brownie, Dark Squirts will spawn from its remains.
  • Delirium has the most health out of any boss in the game.
  • In the games files, there is a unused transformation for Delirium, where it takes the form of Hush in its second phase.
  • Delirium's name comes from the same name, being a mental state that causes disruptions for your mental state, knowledge of your surroundings, and emotions.
  • Delirium is one of the two bosses to be immune to the Chaos Card, a one-hit killing projectile. The other is The Beast.
    • That being said, other one-hit killing moves such as Plan C, Vade Retro, and Eraser, can all be used to kill Delirium, but each one has their own drawbacks and limitations.
  • Aside from Isaac, the Lost, Eden, and Keeper, defeating Delirium with a Tainted character unlocks an item that allows said characters' special ability to be granted to others should they obtain it.
  • While Delirium has no stated gender during the game, Delirium is referred to as male in a tweet by Edmund McMillen promoting the release of The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls.
