Deek Slasky is a minor villain from the manga Black Cat and one of the Apostles of the Star. He appears during the battle of Clarken Island, before being defeated by Sven Vollfield, one of the three main heroes.

Personality[]

Deek is a young man of twenty-one years, rather handsome, clad in winter clothing in reference to his power, who got a life-sentence for murdering four girls "who suited his tastes", keeping them in a freezer.

Like Sven, Deek looks and acts like a gentleman, but in stark contrast to the serious, driven and staunchly chivalrous bounty-hunter, this is just a skin-deep, self-important facade barely veiling the vicious, perverted and immature madman he really is. He affects a poised, laid-back and falsely friendly demeanour, but only as long as he is in control, shattering as soon as things do not go the way he wants.

To his core, Deek is overproud, pretentious, short-tempered, sadistic and all-in-all despicable, lashing out at any opposition he cannot cower. He is lecherous, wanting to "possess" women in the creepiest possible way. He revels in the pain he inflicts and the tortured screams of his victims, smugly boasting about his power without end.

While he is cautious and observant, with a good grasp of tactics, his overconfidence proves his undoing. Deek always takes care to learn about his targets and he can adapt well to their fighting style. He devised a near perfect defence, and always calculates timing, traps enemies before striking or hurls barrages from all sides for a near-certain kill, making him arguably one of the most dangerous Apostles. Still, he refuses to admit having misread the situation, is unable to conceive being in the wrong, or that someone can outsmart or outdo him in any manner.

The more his target resists, the more it infuriates him, quickly becoming unhinged and erratic, ranting hatefully and keeping attacking over and over, throwing caution flying out of the window. Even though he remains strategic and still correctly calculates his moves when blinded by rage, he focuses only on bigger and deadlier moves, forgets his defence, and makes the mistake of focusing solely on his target.

Powers and Abilities[]

Like every other Apostle of the Star, Deek is a highly talented and powerful warrior, fast and spry enough to dodge bullets, who perfectly masters his power of Tao. His power, Freeze, enables him to create ice from the moisture in the air and to control it at will. He is able to cool down the atmosphere around him and he mostly attacks by hurling spear-shaped Ice Blades at variable speed. He can make dozens of them appear everywhere in an undetermined radius, making them even more dangerous, and his Shooting Star attack hurls a very fast barrage of them.

He also attacks with blocks of ice of variable size which he makes fall on his targets, huge pillars of ice erupting from the ground, and waves of ice running along the ground to freeze his enemies' feet and lock them in place. His most dangerous technique is called Freezing Statue: He grabs his enemies and creates ice that expands over their body little by little, until it covers them entirely and freezes them to death in less than five minutes. Given that Deek creates ice through his power of Tao, it instantly vanishes when he gets knocked out, though the wounds and frostbites it caused remain.

Deek's defences are near-impenetrable, needing attacks he cannot counter to take him down. When activated, his Ice Armour technique automatically protects him from all normal attacks, should it be bullets (even from a machine gun), blows or blades, creating ice patches over his body right where he is about to get hit before the attack can reach him, blocking said attack without even tickling him. As for powerful attacks such as grenades, he makes pillars of ice erupt from the ground to intercept them. Yet, contrary to the Ice Armour, this Guard Pillar technique is not activated automatically.

Role in the Story[]

Deek

A close-up on Deek's face.

Deek is introduced when the Sweepers League (a group of powerful bounty hunters which includes the three main protagonists Train Heartnet, Sven Vollfield and Eve) invades Clarken Island, the Apostles of the Star's hideout.

Shiki dispatches the Apostles all around the island to get rid of them, and orders Deek to kill Sven. Deek is first seen attacking the female sweeper Selphie Dearcroft, who is powerless before him, until she is saved by Sven.

Deek is pleased to see his target confronting him on his own and Sven engages him. However, Selphie refuses to give up and attacks Deek with a dagger, only to suffer his Freezing Statue technique, which threatens to kill her within five minutes.

Knowing that Sven can see the future with his Vision Eye power, Deek surrounds him with seemingly unavoidable Ice Blades from every side, but unbeknownst to him, Sven's power evolved after an arduous training to become a Grasper Eye. This new power enables Sven to control the speed of anything he sees, using it to slow down the Ice Blades and avoid them all.

Sven attacks the psychotic Apostle with several weapons but he cannot bypass his defence. Deek then traps Sven's feet in ice to immobilize him and launches another attack but not to avail; and Sven knocks him out with an electrified wire, making the ice that paralyzes him and threatens Selphie's life disappear.

Deek wakes up shortly after, infuriated. He creates an immense block of ice over both sweepers to crush them, and he would have succeeded had he known more about Sven's power.

Now mad with fury, Deek lashes out insults and prepares another attack, but in his rage, he forgets both to reactivate his Ice Armour and to take Selphie into account, and she finishes him off with a hammer-kick to the head.

Deek's fate at the end of the series remains unknown, though it is likely that the Chrono Numbers tailing the Sweepers League took him into custody or, given some Numbers' mindset, finished him off.
