Dario Bossi is the secondary antagonist of Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow. He is a serial arsonist who inherited Dracula's power over Hellfire, who was selected by Celia Fortner, alongside Dmitrii Blinov and the main hero Soma Cruz, to become the new King of the Night. His final fate depends on Soma's choices and actions.

Personality[]

Dario is a short-tempered, agressive, domineering, sadistic and violently unhinged psycho, whose looks, clothing and mannerisms evoke a hooligan. He revels in destruction, using his pyrokinetic powers without the slightest restrain or moral code. To him, all that matters is his twisted ideals of Social Darwinism, delusionally fancying himself as having the right to crush anyone he wants. To make matters worse, he proves pretty dim-witted, seemingly unable to grasp pretty obvious points and even less able to plan ahead. That said, whether he is truly stupid or simply regards using his brains beneath him is not known.

He is loud, brash, rude and obnoxious, with little patience and no sense of respect whatsoever. He only follows Celia to indulge his twisted obsession on a larger scale. He cannot stand competition, and even less obstacles of all sorts. He covets the King of the Night's god-like powers just to keep lording over weaker preys, but refuses to let anyone else gain it. Fittingly, Soma and his friends hold him in utter contempt, viewing him as a wretch unworthy of the power that went way over his head.

Dario takes great offence for the smallest slights and wants to kill anyone he dislikes on the spot. He commits crimes just because he can, because he enjoys it, and because no-one could stop him. In the same vein, he refuses to back down and admit defeat, even after having been soundly trounced, and craves for a rematch.

Nevertheless, when deprived of his power, Dario reveals the pathetic coward hiding behind his abrassiveness. Reduced to the state of the "normal" mortals he looked down upon, he flees never to be seen again, humiliated. Which for an overgrown schoolyard bully like him would be far worse than death.

Powers and Abilities[]

Dario wields Dracula's power to conjure and control fire from Hell itself, albeit to a lower extent that the Count's. He can shoot fireballs and fire blasts at his targets, conjure gigantic and devastating fire pillars from the ground, or gather his power into a devastating conflagration.

Oddly enough, he can also teleport by transforming into fire and quickly warping to another place before rematerializing. However, his powers lack the versatility and wider potential of the other two Candidates, reflecting his petty, small-scale goal of destruction for the sake of it.

Later in the Game, he gains the powers of the mighty fire demon Aguni, considerably boosting his own. He becomes able to perform Dracula's signature attack "Hellfire", and to shape his fire blasts. However, it comes with a major downside, as since Aguni was merged with his soul, its destruction would break his power, leaving him weak and destitute.

Biography[]

Background[]

Dracula was destroyed for good by Julius Belmont in 1999 and his Demon Castle was sealed away in a solar eclipse, but Evil was not fully destroyed. Dracula was to reincarnate and a few people born the very moment of his fall inherited some of his Dark Powers. Graham Jones gained his mastery of Dark Magic, Dmitrii Blinov gained his power of Mimicry and as for Dario, he gained his power over fire and hellfire. Dario used his powers to cause many fires and became an international criminal, until being recruited by the Dark Priestess Celia Fortner in 2036.

Role in the Game[]

One year prior, Graham Jones entered the Castlevania during a solar eclipse and attempted to take Dracula's vacant throne, but he was defeated by Soma Cruz, Dracula's true reincarnation. However, Soma rejected his Dark Legacy and defeated the very essence of Evil, Chaos itself. Believing that God needs the opposition of the King of the Night to maintain the balance of the world, Celia intends to make Dario, Dmitrii, and Soma Cruz himself compete within the walls of a reflection of the Castlevania, to see who would become the new King of the Night.

After Soma defeated Dmitrii, he confronts Dario, who rants about him defeating the other Dark Lord candidate, whom he wanted to kill by his own hand. After Soma defeats Dario, Celia barges in and teleports him away. She then summons the Fire Demon Aguni to possess Dario and vastly increases his pyrokinetic powers.

Drawing power from the evil energies gathered in the castle, Dario cannot be fully defeated unless a seal is performed, and he takes profit of this to defeat Julius Belmont, the extremely powerful but aging vampire hunter who destroyed Dracula for good. Since Julius cannot perform seals, Dario rose time and time again, winning the battle through sheer attrition. Conforted in his delusion of invincibility, Dario settles in the throne room, but Soma catches up with him and puts an end to his ambitions.

Fate in the different endings[]

If Soma defeats Dario during the rematch, he seals his foe's powers and Dario perishes, engulfed in the uncontrollable fires of Aguni, causing a bad ending. To truly finish the game, Soma must use the soul of the Mirror Demon Paranoia to enter the mirror in the room and fight Aguni instead. Since Aguni has been linked to his powers, Dario is deprived of them now that the demon is gone and he flees the castle, never to be seen again.

Fighting Dario[]

Dario can teleport by turning into fire and has a fighting style similar to that of Dracula himself. He teleports around the room and attacks by hurling a fireball, by making a wave of fire erupt towards Soma, and by trapping Soma between two fire pillars before conjuring a third one right where he stands. If Soma fights him a second time, he uses Dracula's signature "Hellfire" spell (three fireballs) instead of his normal fireball and also conjures two fire dragons.

Fighting Aguni[]

Aguni

Aguni the Fire Demon

Aguni (a possible mistranslation of Agni, the name of the Fire God of the Hindu religion, and a pun with "agony") poses a much bigger threat than Dario. He uses very powerful attacks and moves erratically to disturb Soma's attack pattern.

He flies off-screen to crash on the ground, causing two fiery waves in either direction, breathes huge fireballs in succession sending fiery waves along the ground, and repeatedly strikes the ground with his claws, each time right where Soma is standing.

Aguni is fought again in the game Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, which is set in 1944, implying that he has been serving Dracula for quite some time.
