Villain Overview

Get away from my house! I'm gonna rip them to bits!
~ Constance's most famous quote.
Constance: You vandals! You hooligans! I'll get you!
Horace Nebbercracker: Constance, No!
~ Constance's last words as she threatens two young children with an axe.

Constance Nebbercracker, also known as the Monster House, is the titular main antagonist of the 2006 Columbia Pictures computer-animated film of the same name.

She was once an unwilling member of a circus freak show until Horace Nebbercracker saved her, falling in love and later becoming Nebbercracker's housewife. But one Halloween some children decided to torment and laugh at her. She lost her balance while trying to chase them away, falling to her death into the basement of their still unfinished house along with some fresh cement. Having become part of the foundation, she possessed and physically became the house, desiring to kill all the children of the neighborhood. She is the archenemy of DJ Walters, Chowder and Jenny Bennett.

In her original form, she was voiced by Kathleen Turner, who also played Matty Walker in Body Heat, Beverly Sutphin in Serial Mom, Claudia in A Simple Wish, Snow Queen in Stories From My Childhood, Dr. Elena Kinder in Baby Geniuses, and Gwendolyn in 3Below.

In her monster house form, her vocal effects were provided by Frank Welker, who also played Little Sergei in The Secret Life of Pets 2, Godzilla in the 1998 film of the same name, Krang Three in Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie, the Spiny Mandrilla in The Croods: A New Age, Mor'du in Disney and Pixar's Brave, the Turbo Toilet 2000 in DreamWorks' Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, the Indoraptor in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Rudy in Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs.

Appearance[]

When she was human, Constance was a tall obese woman with short black hair, pale pink cheeks and grey eyes. Her legs were short with seemingly fat arms. In her first appearance, she wore a green dress with white flowers and heels. Prior to her death, she wore a dress that was full red and still kept her pink stockings and black heels.

After taking possession of the house, Constance's physical appearance is comprised of the different parts of the structure. She has black roof shingles which can move with the chimney placed on the right side that leads to her heart, although the exact location of the fire is yet unknown, although it is said to be in the furnace basement. Her wooden walls are a desert sand color. Her eyes are windows of different shapes, the left one being square and the right is semi oval. The eyes have blinds similar to lids to express her emotions. Her eyes can glow depending on her state of mind. The porch and door comprise her mouth with small wooden planks that emerge and act as her teeth to give her a powerful bite. Constance has two trees that act as her arms and she is able to control the lawn and walkway that leads toward her. Inside, Constance has a room that functions similar to a human's inner mouth. She has a red elongated carpet for a tongue, a chandelier resembling a uvula, and a green throat which is an opened pit with sharp wooden blades circling around.

When awakened or disturbed, parts of Constance break apart to further reveal her monstrous nature and she puts herself back together when calming down. When consumed by rage, her overall appearance is more ferocious than her previous state. The middlemost trees uproot and attach to her roof allowing her to walk, her wooden teeth become more pronounced, a bunch of shingles are ripped out revealing holes, and her eyes are now a fiery orange color.

In her final form, Constance is completely demolished, but quickly assembles her broken pieces into an even more menacing form. Her entire body is made of jagged, broken pieces of wood with now-shattered window eyes and a triangular mouth with longer fangs. The chimney is set on the center of her head like a bomb, she keeps her first tree arm as the left arm, her right arm is now made of jagged wood and her right tree arm are now located at the bottom of her body as a tail.

Personality[]

Due to the violent nature of her death and the misery she has gone through, Constance is trapped in a hateful and destructive state: When others come near her, she will often attack them, though she may wait to a certain extent. Her husband is the sole exception, as he is the one person she does not attack and allows to get close. However, she started to show hostility and eventually turned against him when DJ convinced him to "let her go". Constance is quick to anger, which is evident by her reacting to the boys throwing eggs and rocks at her before she died and overhearing others talking about her in house form. Despite her rage, she has also been known to tease and humor people, shown when she taunted Chowder with his basketball and when she rolled out her carpet tongue for a dummy created by the children, as she is aware what their plan was by "allowing" the dummy in before Officers Landers and Lister intervened.

Constance is shown to be rather intelligent. She apparently knew that she could lure children into her by using the possessions that Mr. Nebbercracker had confiscated from the children over the years, and that Halloween would be an excellent time for her to attempt to devour children as they would inevitably attempt to go trick-or-treating at the house which she possessed.

However, despite her atrocious and psychotic goals and intent, Constance is capable of showing remorse for her actions and can be easily reasoned with, but hates being betrayed when Horace attempts to blow her up, forcing her to completely lose the ability of reasoning and succumbed to her violent goals. This became worse when she is in her monstrous and deranged final form as she is strong enough to destroy an excavator.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Sentient House Physiology: As a result of her death after being buried in cement that suffocated her, Constance's spirit permanently merged with the house she loved which gives her several abilities to her monstrous nature.
    • Supernatural Strength: Constance shows feat of physical strength due to her gargantuan size, able to lift herself and break free with no pain and gradually pull a grown man to her opening.
    • Object Manipulation: Constance was able to control any objects internal or external which are a part of her body, as she uses the trees to lead the police car to her mouth and the concrete path to lift any person regardless of his/her weight. Constance is shown to call from a distance and emit a growling sound to those who pick up.
    • House Formation: Due to being bonded to the house, Constance can change her appearance by easily returning back to her original state, to avoid suspicions. As such, she was clever to remain dormant in order to prevent the police from finding the truth reported by the kids.
    • Carpet Tongue: Constance possessed a tongue-like carpet which she could stretch to a limited extent and use to lift both people and heavy objects.
    • Regeneration: When Constance broke into pieces, she demonstrated the ability to heal and reform portions of the house, due to her essence merged with the said house.
    • Sense of Sight: Constance can fire a beam of light from her eyes inside her head, allowing her to see what's inside and track any caused disturbance.
    • Furniture Manipulation: In the Playstation 2, Gamecube, Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance games, she is able to make minions out of various household items to protect the inside of herself from intruders, ranging from chairs, lamps, wall-lamps, televisions, floorboards, rotting tree root wood as floorboards for the lower and basement floors, books, plates, bookcases, dressers, fridges, record players, candles, radiators, gas tank radiators, rubbish piles, clocks, toy airplanes, gunpowder bags, vases, barrels, teddy bears and chimera turrets made from various objects and six pipe legs, and even to metal appliances such as stoves and pipes.
    • Teeth Extension: Constance has the ability to grow extra set of teeth for a more ferocious attack and bite. The strength of her bite allows her to tear an excavator's arm and lift it to her mouth with no effort, as well as being able to chomp a police car in half.
    • Yard Control: Constance was shown to control the lawn in a form of fingers that can grab and hold on to anything. This gives her an advantage to create a bloodbath by leading children to their unseen death, if it were not for the kids' interference. She can absorb objects that are on the lawn like a sign, a stretcher wheel and a beer bottle. As such, she can move the grass at any location, making it look like a mole digging under it.

Trivia[]

  • In terms of backstory, Constance is the American answer for both the Onryō and the Yūrei, vengeful spirits from Japanese mythology as both are wronged in their lifetime and are ultimately killed (though Constance's death was accidental, despite being violent), resulting in them becoming restless souls that terrorize the living as well as haunting the places that they lived and died. Unlike the Onryō and Yūrei, however, Constance's restless spirit possessed her house most of the time, though she briefly manifests as a shadowy apparition when DJ took a peek into his house.
  • When Jenny points out the house's uvula, Chowder claims that the house must be female, foreshadowing that he was correct.
  • When DJ has a nightmare about the house, the arm that reaches out from the doorway is visibly overweight, which foreshadows that the house was indeed possessed by Constance.
  • When Bones recalls how he lost his kite to Nebbercracker when he was a child, he mentions seeing Nebbercracker talking to his house and even kissing it, another foreshadow of Constance’s existence.
  • Early drafts of the film revealed concepts for Constance's character that were not used due to be deemed too disturbing and to keep the rating:
    • The interior of the house possessed by Constance was warped that it resembled much more interior of human organs.
    • When Chowder explores the house and stumbles upon a large mirror that used to be Constance's, Constance's spirit appeared in the mirror and attacked him.
    • The early script also further cemented Constance's status as an antagonist who posed an even greater threat than either Bones or Zee, as there is a scrapped scene where Zee also ended up getting devoured by Constance.
    • Constance's victims were originally supposed to be dead, but the creators decided that they should keep them alive.
  • In the original screenplay, a pair of bullies named Ryan and Cameron harass DJ and Chowder before DJ purposely leads them to be eaten by the house. However, the idea was scrapped for being too dark.
  • It is unknown why no one else in the neighborhood heard or even questioned the obvious screaming and loud noises from the house possessed by Constance, especially when chasing DJ, Chowder, Jenny, and Horace down the streets. A plausible explanation is they happened to be outside hearing distance and that many of them are occupied by Halloween preparations somewhere else.
  • A fact which related to Horace's former occupation as the member of demolition squad which Constance knew pretty well but easily overlooked by audience that they left baffled by how DJ managed to destroy the house she possessed with a dynamite was a stash of explosives belonged to her husband which he apparently stored in a part of the house the kids had no chance to explore (likely somewhere near a box of dynamite Chowder stumbled upon). This also explained why her rage escalated further upon seeing her husband made up his mind to put her out of her misery before the kids eventually interfered and did him a favor instead, mainly due to old age.
  • Shortly after Nebbercracker was taken away by the ambulance, the crack on one of the house's windows crosses DJ's neck, symbolizing her intent to kill DJ even though Horace didn't die.
