Commander Blanx restarted the civil war between the Pale Martians and the Green Martians. His chief rival, J'onn Jonzz, was ultimately captured and taken into custody. Because J'onn was too popular a figure to execute, Blanx instead exiled him for thirteen years. However, during his first year, Jonzz was teleported to Earth by a teleportation beam, where he took on the name of Martian Manhunter.
Years later, Blanx traveled to Earth himself to kill J'onzz. After his first attempt to murder J'onzz failed, Blanx led his men in riots throughout Middletown U.S.A. to draw him out. The Martian Manhunter met Blanx in battle and subdued him, but Blanx managed to escape.
Blanx and his men set a trap for Martian Manhunter and succeeded in capturing him. Blanx trapped Manhunter within a rocket and prepared to ignite it, but he was stopped by a collection of superheroes. Blanx battled with Superman, and Martian Manhunter was freed. After Blanx and his men were defeated, Superman carried them back to Mars. Sometime after the incident, representatives of a distant star-system offered to buy Mars for mineral wealth. However, according to their code, only the last living Martian had the right to sell. Blanx responded by releasing the Blue Flame, setting Mars aflame and rendering it uninhabitable. The few surviving Martians were forced to flee the planet.
Commander Blanx was ultimately defeated by the Martian Manhunter and the Justice League of America, who overcame his forces. Blanx dueled Manhunter, their battle culminating in Blanx plummeting from a considerable height and being crushed by a large globe, killing him.
