Villain Overview

I'll never forgive you for as long as I live, and I'll hate you even longer! I'll despise you for eternity. So... I propose a toast, to the death of our marriage!
~ Chris Tate moments before he kills himself to frame his third ex-wife Charity Dingle for mariticide as revenge for her affair with her cousin and his love rival Cain Dingle.

Chris Tate is a major character in the British soap opera Emmerdale.

He first appeared in 1989 and started out as one of the show's major protagonists throughout 1990-1993. Following the infamous Emmerdale plane crash scenario in between 1993-1994, Chris developed a villainous streak and became the show's central antagonist for the rest of his duration up until his eventual departure in September 2003.

He was portrayed by Peter Amory.

History[]

Chris Tate first appeared in 1989 as the son of businessman Frank Tate, brother of Zoe, and stepson of Kim.

At first Chris was a good man who ran his business fairly. He also married a woman named Kathy Bates. But that all changed when Chris got injured in a devastating Plane Crash in 1993, which left him paralyzed from the waist down.

In light of the Plane Crash disaster, Chris was left permanently resentful of his life. So much so that the the character then became much more jaded and bitter, often using his intelligence and assets to exact revenge on those he perceived to have hurt him.

His newfound ruthlessness began to emerge when Chris realized from his disability that Kathy only remained with him to fulfil the role of his career, which leads to the breakdown of their marriage. They eventually divorced after Chris had an affair with Kathy's best-friend Rachel Hughes, who later got pregnant with their baby; when Kathy found out about this, she attacked Chris and threw him out of his wheelchair in a fit of rage.

In 1995, Chris was present when Rachel gave birth to their son Joseph. They later got married in 1995, but his but his growing lust for money and indifference for everyone else's feelings lead to their marital breakdown up to the point where they parted ways with a divorce.

By then Chris had become sworn enemies with Kim as their longstanding feud depicts from his belief that she only married his father for his inheritance. This soon escalated when Frank dies of a heart attack, and Chris vows revenge on Kim after suspecting that she killed him. Soon enough, Chris' obsession with bringing Kim to justice heightens when she is later put on trial for conspiring with her second husband Steve Marchant in theft and robbery; Steve is later found guilty and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment, whereas Kim's fate is to be decided the following morning. Later on, Kim confronts Chris to steal their remaining money and they have a final showdown when Chris makes a last-ditch attempt to bring Kim down for Frank's death. But in the end Chris loses when Kim knocks him out with a paperweight, confesses to killing Frank, steals their money, and leaves Chris to die before escaping the village with her and Frank's son James. Hours later, Chris is rushed to hospital and he recuperates.

In 1999, Chris begins to alienate his sister and many villagers. He is soon attacked and kidnapped by an unknown assailant, who is later revealed to be his illegitimate half-brother Liam Hammond. The kidnapping ordeal lasts for several months until Zoe finds out what is happening. She manages to find Chris and ends up shooting Liam dead, though Chris is left distraught by the sudden turn of events.

In 2000, Chris attempts to reconcile with Kathy after she survives nearly being killed by her boyfriend Graham Clark; earlier on Graham had killed Rachel after she found out that he previously murdered his ex-wife before proceeding to seduce Kathy and nearly dispose of her as well. However, this doesn't happen after one of Chris' faulty trucks devastates the village that causes the death of four people. Chris and his company are eventually exonerated, but not before he triggers a dispute with his business partner Sean Reynonds over the situation. He later replaces him with notorious crime boss Ray Mullan, but that too ends when Chris discovers Ray's true colors.

Not long afterwards, Chris was horrified when his lesbian sister Zoe fell pregnant. Her ex-lover Scott Windsor was revealed to be the father and this ignited a quarrel between Chris and Sean, as her brother had believed Scott had raped Zoe. Thereupon Chris paid to have Scott's garage torched and hired a prostitute to set Scott up and make a rape allegation against him. Zoe got the charges dropped when Scott signed over his rights to their daughter.

During this time, Chris has got acquainted with former prostitute Charity Dingle. They have a relationship, despite a 12-year age gap and the disapproval of Zoe, before eventually getting married despite revelations from both families respectively. However, their relationship deteriorated due to Charity's selfishness and it wasn't until her affair with cousin Cain Dingle and the revelation that the duo conceived a daughter - Debbie Dingle - became the final straw. In addition, Chris had meanwhile learned he had an inoperable brain tumor following his past confrontation with Kim. Rather than wait to die, Chris decided to use this opportunity to exact revenge on Charity.

After ensuring Charity would be left with nothing, he manipulated her into seeing him at Home Farm under a false belief that the duo could have hope of restarting their marriage. In his last words, Chris insultingly disowned Charity before drinking a toast to "the death of their marriage". Taking the drink, it turned out to be poison when Chris suddenly collapsed and died in front of his treacherous wife. As he dies, Chris calls Charity a "whore" before succumbing to the poison.

It became clear that Chris had intentionally committed suicide and had sought to frame Charity for his murder, which appeared successful when she was arrested and later found guilty of the crime.
