Charlotte is a minor villain in Puella Magi Madoka Magica. She is a Witch, that is to say a magical girl corrupted by grief and despair. Unlike most witches, she has two forms. Her normal form is not very formidable, but her true caterpillar form is very dangerous and can easily tear enemies apart.

Official profile

"The dessert witch, with a tenacious nature. She desires everything. She will never give up. Though she is capable of creating infinite amounts of any dessert she desires, she is unable to make the cheese that she loves most. One could easily catch her off-guard with a piece of cheese."

Plot

When Homura attempts to warn Mami that this witch is different from the others she has fought, Mami (who considers Homura a traitor) refuses to listen and chains her up with her powers. Mami fights off the minions of the witch. She later reaches the witch's lair, and appears to kill her. However, the witch suddenly transforms into a giant caterpillar, catching her off-guard and decapitating her with a huge bite. As Mami's headless body falls to the floor, the witch continues to chomp on her remains, as the horrified Madoka and Sayaka can only watch.

With Mami's death, the restraints on Homura are broken. The rogue magical girl proceeds to destroy the Witch by tricking her into eating several bombs, which she then detonates, blowing the voracious being to pieces.

Trivia

  • A charlotte is a type of dessert.
  • The name Charlotte could also refer to Charlotte Buff, a woman Goethe unrequitedly loved and that deeply influenced him. The central and homonym character from Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther was based on her.
  • Runes in Charlotte's card are styled like biscuits.
  • On the official website, mousing over Charlotte's card changes the image from the first to the second using JavaScript.
  • Although official pronunciations of almost all witches' names are undisclosed, "Charlotte" is pronounced "シャルロッテ" (Sharurotte) like a German name (Shar-lot-teh) according to an official product's document.
  • Pyotr is the Russian form of the given name Peter.
  • Charlotte makes a brief appearance in Puella Magi Oriko Magica, whereas ironically instead of killing Mami, she was instead killed off by Mami. This becomes plausible as during this timeline, Mami was not overjoyed with the concept of friendship that Madoka offered (Madoka was not with her), thus she became more careful and calculated in battle, prevailing over Charlotte's second form.
  • Charlotte's first form is based on candy (her head resembles a candy in a wrapper). Her second form may be based on the Hungry Hungry Caterpillar. The concept of the caterpillar being the stronger form is unusual, since caterpillars are normally larvae which mature into butterflies, thus having something transform into a caterpillar is surprising.
  • Charlotte is one of the most infamous witches in the show for having been responsible for Mami's early death, a huge shocker for many people who expected it to be a more typical and happy Magical Girl series.
  • The runes reading "MAMI MOGU MOGU GONBO" in Charlotte's barrier describe Mami's death, as mogu mogu is onomatopoeia for chewing, but also likely reference to a famous educational cooking TV show called Mogu Mogu Gombo.
    • There is no significant difference between the Japanese pronunciations of gonbo and gombo, so gonbo is an alternate romanization.
    • Mogu Mogu Gombo aired from 1993 until 2003 and was hosted by two famous comedians (Kobuhei Hayashiya and HIROMI). The main target audience was children, but many adults also enjoyed it.
    • The cooking and eating themes of the show match Charlotte's themes of sweets and eating Mami. A children's show matches other aspects of the barrier: Charlotte looks like a doll in one form and a clown in the other, she has a tea party setup like what a little girl might arrange, and she fills her barrier with candy.
  • Charlotte is a unique witch because she has two forms. Witches like this seem to be extremely rare, considering that Homura tries to warn Mami this Witch is different from most others, and the fact that a seasoned magical girl like Mami is surprised to behold Charlotte's metamorphosis.
