~ Catalina betraying Claude during a bank heist. |
Catalina is the main antagonist of the 2001 video game Grand Theft Auto III and a supporting antagonist in its 2004 prequel Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
She is a criminal in Red County, and later the leader of the Colombian Cartel in Liberty City. She is also the cousin of Varrios Los Aztecas leader Cesar Vialpando and Claude's ex-girlfriend-turned archenemy. She has also briefly dated Carl "CJ" Johnson.
She was voiced by Cynthia Farrell.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
There's not much known about Catalina's backstory. She once revealed to Carl Johnson while they were robbing banks, that she suffered cruel treatment from her abusive stepfather as a child. She reveals his death, but it's unknown on how he died. While growing up, Catalina has been into numerous relationships with different men. It appears that she was responsible for killing her boyfriends before CJ came into the picture as their graves are next to her hideout in Fern Ridge, Red County.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas[]
Catalina first appears chronologically in 1992-era San Andreas threatening to kill a couple of men with a knife at The Welcome Pump in Dilimore but is stopped by Carl Johnson who's looking for "a friend of mine's cousin". With the help of Cesar Vialpando's connections outside Los Santos, They both form a temporary relationship, resulting in a falling out afterwards over Catalina accusing Carl for being a misogynist.
After successfully robbing numerous banks, Carl is befriended by Triad leader Woozie who's impressed with Carl's professional driving skills. He makes contact with Woozie, wanting to form a business partnership, to which Carl agrees. Things get out of hand when Carl is confronted by Catalina, resulting in an attempt to smash his car up, but Carl pushes her away. Carl's reason of winning races is to impress Catalina, but she doesn't love him anymore as she is now in a new relationship with Claude. Catalina calls Carl a "coward" saying he can take rejection before the next race starts. Carl ultimately wins the race against Claude, but Catalina tells him that he had the "unfair advantage". Carl, no longer pleased with Catalina, gives him a pink slip to a garage in San Fierro. Carl calls her a "B-tch", which makes Catalina's boyfriend Claude attempt to intimidate CJ. CJ, threatened by Claude, tells them both to have a good time, bidding their farewells.
However, this was not the last that Carl has heard from Catalina, as she continues to provoke him on the phone until the final mission "End of the Line", teasing Carl while she has sex with Claude on the phone after the deaths of Big Smoke and Frank Tenpenny. Carl calls her sick but she says that he's just jealous. This was the last conversation that they ever have.
Events of Grand Theft Auto III (2001)[]
After arriving in Liberty City, Catalina begins discussions with and becomes the leader of the Colombian Cartel and, with some of their members (including Miguel) rob a bank in the city. After robbing the bank she ultimately betrays and shoots Claude, leaving him for dead in an alleyway and explaining that he is 'small-time'. She continues her criminal activities with the Cartel, increasing the production of SPANK and distributing it via the local street gangs in Liberty City including the Triads and Uptown Yardies, whom the former would eventually go to war with the Leone Family to maintain their control over parts of Portland and their monopoly on the distribution of SPANK. During this period, Claude managed to escape from an LCPD convoy with, unintentionally, help from the Colombian Cartel (who were seeking to capture the Old Oriental Gentleman) and began working for Leone made man Luigi Goterelli.
Claude later flees to Staunton Island after being betrayed by the Leones and begins to work for Yakuza co-leader Asuka Kasen whom in the later half of the game plots against the Cartel following the death of her brother Kenji at the hands of a 'Cartel assassin', which was really Claude working on orders from Donald Love. Love later sends Claude to collect a package from a construction site in Fort Staunton, where he once again meets Catalina and Miguel, with Catalina shooting Miguel in the back and escaping with the package. Asuka, desperate to exact revenge for her brother's near death, begins to torture Miguel for information, with Asuka then using the information to aid Claude in ruining Cartel interests and schemes in Liberty City, including the killing of Cartel “death squads” set up by Catalina to kill Claude in Shoreside Vale, destroying Cartel and Yardie-run SPANK distribution stands disguised as coffee vendors across Liberty City, and destroying a plane landing at the city’s airport containing a shipment of SPANK and collecting its contents.
Catalina, however, strikes back and murders both Asuka and Miguel before kidnapping Maria Latore, using her as a hostage and demanding a $500,000 ransom be brought to the Cartel-owned mansion in Cedar Grove, in exchange for Maria not being killed. Claude decides to take the ransom money to Catalina and manages to escape an ambush, set up by Catalina, who escapes in a helicopter and keeps Maria hostage. Claude follows Catalina to Cochrane Dam, where he rescues Maria and kills Catalina by shooting down her helicopter with a rocket launcher.
Personality[]
Catalina is portrayed as an extremely reckless, violent, hateful, cruel, greedy, psychotic, quarrelsome, and hypocritical woman who turns on even close partners if they cease to be useful to her (as seen with Carl Johnson, Claude and Miguel). Much more of Catalina's psyche is brought to light during her conversations with Carl Johnson, frequently shooting bystanders during heists and referencing cannibalism.
She also suffers from a persecution complex, possibly due to cruel treatment by her stepfather as a child, telling Johnson that "They had to die because YOU were slow and stupid, like a big fat brat that eats chocolates while his father gives nothing to his stepdaughter but stale bread!".
Powers and Abilities[]
- Strength: Catalina is possibly one of the strongest characters within the GTA series. She can jump very long distances without getting injured. She can also lift several tons of stolen items, be it money or jewelry.
- Heist planning: She is excellent at planning heists, perhaps even better than Lester Crest.
- Leadership/Intelligence: She is a great cartel leader and one of the smartest characters within the whole series. Her intelligence can be rivaled to that of the FIB and IAA.
- Multilingualism: Catalina is fluent in English, Spanish, and possibly several other languages.

Trivia[]
- She is about 5’9 and 125 lbs.
- In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, she appears to have darker skin compared to how she looks in Grand Theft Auto III, where she appears slightly paler than before. This implies that she had vitiligo (disease which causes the skin to lose its pigment color) in Liberty City. Many people also theorize that she may have "bleached" her skin, while others said that she is wearing makeup. Given the fact that she is a Hispanic woman, the reason why her skin turned whiter in GTA III is highly unknown, though it could possibly be a developer oversight.
- Even though she is a woman, similarly to certain male GTA characters such as Trevor Philips and Tommy Vercetti, there’s a chance that she has superhuman strengths and abilities, considering she jumped a long distance from a high position after shooting Miguel without getting injured.
- It's also possible that Catalina being psychotic allows her to have a high pain tolerance.
- By release order, Catalina is the first antagonist of the Grand Theft Auto 3D Universe. Chronologically, however, Catalina is the final antagonist of the 3D Universe.
- Catalina, alongside Dimitri Rascalov, are the only main antagonists that they will betray their allies to gain more power. Although, Catalina appears in both games and had spared Carl Johnson despite Catalina's betrayal, which soon led to her second betrayal towards Claude. And unlike Catalina, Dimitri was openly hostile.
- Some fans assume that Catalina's full name is Catalina Vialpando as she is the cousin of Cesar Vialpando. However, this is unconfirmed, as she could be Cesar's cousin through the wife of a possible uncle.
- Catalina is the first and so far only female main antagonist in the Grand Theft Auto franchise.
